It's manga time on Crying in the Book Club, and we have an absolute doozy for this episode: A big chunk of
Berserk. For this episode, we read The Black Swordsman and the first half of The Golden Age, or if you're Jean-Luc, just The Golden Age. He can't follow basic instructions. It's the whole crew's first time with
Berserk, so no one was entirely sure what to expect. There's a lot of raving about the book as a whole--and Griffith's hair in particular--but also some more critical discussion of the art and Kentaro Miura's handling of his female characters. But overall, it's quite positive--positive enough we'll be coming back for more in the near future. Next, on Crying in the Book Club: The book club experiences tonal whiplash by going directly from
Berserk to Mark Russell Stephen Byrne's
Wonder Twins.
