Japan is known for many yokai-cryptid types. One such cryptid is a terrifying sea phantom that's said to emerge from the depths of calm waters on moonlit nights. This dark, shadowy presence is said to bring upon torrential downpours, rocky waters, and stormy nights as it towers over unsuspecting sailors. Legend has it that the Umibōzu is said to ask one simple question just before attacking sailors and capsizing their ships—answer the riddle incorrectly, and the ocean might become your early grave.

The term “eldritch horror” has seen a lot of popularity in the darker corners of the internet. Monstrous beings like Cthulhu have cemented themselves in popular culture. But what if H.P. Lovecraft, the founder of Cosmic Horror, wasn’t the first to create such artistic works? What if Lovecraft borrowed inspiration from something far more tangible than we ever hope to admit? Well, according to Maryland locals, the Snallygaster, a beast depicted as a massive, part bird-part reptilian beast with huge wings, metallic talons that resembled steel hooks, one single eye right in the center of its head, and a long, pointed, razor-sharp beak that was lined with rows of razor-sharp teeth and has been rumored to uncurl a set of long tentacles from out of its throat and then wrap around its victim’s wounds and begin to use the suction cups along those tentacles to drain it’s victims dry. When hundreds of Florida residents reported a large, hairy beast breaking into their homes, stealing their belongings, and torturing their beloved pets in 1973, badged officials were brought in to oversee the crime scenes. But having always showed up just a little too late, the unknown cryptid seemed to always be a few steps ahead. From seeing the beast from afar on dark nights to seeing something strange waddle through the Florida Everglades, almost 30 years had gone by without any trace.
