This episode is about taking a triggering moment in life and turning it into a business. Becky Connelly as a young child experienced the embarrassment of her budding breast appearing in a family photo, and thought I cannot let this happen to other girls. Becky used her persistence and drive to create Non-Disclosure Apparel, a female owned company who produces bralettes in the United States for women and girls. Becky explains her struggles and how she overcame them.
On her desk, Non Disclosure Apparel founder, Becky Connelly, has a framed photo of her 11 year old self. She explains, “It’s Olan Mills portrait and the studio lighting was perfectly illuminating my breast buds poking through my dress. I was completely mortified and cringed at the thought of other people seeing my “boobies” through my clothes.” Since then, Connelly she’s been self conscious about it.
Fast forward 35 years, and working in the traditionally male-dominated profession of construction, Connelly used many tricks to keep her “nips” under wraps. At school in Boston for construction management she was one of only three girls in her class, and during her subsequent career was often the only woman in the meeting room or on the job site.
“I never want to draw any attention to that part of my body,” she explains. After years of using medical tape, adhesive petals, and silicone concealers to hide the issue, and totally frustrated with uncomfortable padding and molded bras that reshaped her figure, she decided to do something about it.
“I had dreamt of my ideal bra, a non-padded, lightweight bralette with a thin, strong as hell concealer inside each cup,” she says from her home office in Charleston, SC.
After five years and several false starts, Connelly launched Non Disclosure Apparel and its first product, the Elli Bralette —a concealing bralette,—in January 2020. Designed without padding, wiring and completely seamless, the bralette features a small, thin, flexible “system” of fabric heat-sealed into its center, designed to completely conceal any potential nipple protuberance.
Connelly adds, “It’s flipping the script on the bralette as we know it, providing 100% coverage without padding - it’s a total game changer.”
