Over 8 years ago, Rachel moved from New York to a small Caribbean island off the coast of Belize for a job.

Today she still calls Ambergris Caye home and despite the cultural differences and nuances, she has adapted to a slower, and easier pace of life in Central America.

"I was in a real New York state of mind. Now my life is a lot simpler and easier."

Her tips on becoming more culturally competent are:

Understand that you're a visitor; you don't have the right to criticize the other (country/culture).

Some countries are less or not confrontational, so maybe you shouldn't be either.

Live simply if that's the local lifestyle; don't be tied down by your stuff.

Judith Hornok is THE DECODER.

She studies the “special codes” of individuals and groups worldwide.

Over fifteen years she has researched the social-emotional mindset of the Arab people in the Gulf.

During her studies, she identified the negative, aggressive forms of emotions and feelings and realized quickly how much influence social-emotional behavior has on day-to-day life in business as well as personal relationships.

Coronavirus in China with Lawrence Draken

About This Week's Guest Lawrence Draken

Lawrence Draken published "The Year of the Rabid Dragon" in November 2018, a medical mystery set in Beijing, China.

The story wound around political intrigue, cover-ups, and secret interrogations, but most of all, the potential for scientists in a culture with drastically different ethics, to use new technology like CRISPR and virology for nefarious means.

Draken writes not just crime stories, but about current events, politics, and the daily drama within China that is nearly impossible to understand from the outside.

She lived with her husband in Beijing for nearly five years.

Her book is as much a study of the culture and mindset of China as it is a medical thriller with the Coronavirus in China on the background.

"In Germany people value their individual rights highly (as they do in the US; In China the 'Group' forms the functional core and you first do what the authorities tell you and when you do that you will have your individual freedom."

Her tips on becoming more culturally competent are:

Leave your home country; if you can, take a sabbatical year or two. Get yourself confronted with different situations that you don't understand (and learn from them).

If/when you come in contact with someone new, try not to pass judgment but try to learn first about what is going on.

Be open to the experience that you might undergo and realize that what you possibly expected to happen or be, might not be what you will experience.

Lawrence Draken

About This Week's Guest Lawrence Draken

Lawrence Draken is an author and small business owner.

Her latest book, “The Year of the Rabid Dragon” is a medical thriller based in Beijing, China, centered around a virus spread through the civilian population of China’s capital.

Draken lived and worked in Beijing for nearly five years, researching high-energy physics, and then working on a strategy and engineering team with a German auto company.

While living and working in China, Draken was struck by the distance between the headlines of what people hear on the news about China, and the picture of China she formed living there and interacting in the daily drama of the city.

Writing became a way for her to share the bigger picture of how China works as a country with people who aren’t able to live overseas themselves.

Her book is as much a study of the culture and mindset of China as it is a medical thriller.

About This Week's Guest Michael Cobb

After success in the computer industry, Michael formed ECI Development in 1996.

This residential resort development company owns projects in Belize, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama including 5 miles of beachfront, 4000 acres, a golf course, hotels, and residential properties.

Michael contributes professionally to matters concerning international real estate finance and development.

He serves on the board of several multinational companies, and charitable foundations, and is a past International Director for the National Association of Realtors. Michael and his wife, Carol, lived as expats, raising two daughters overseas, from 2002 through 2016.

"If you come to Latin American Culture without patience, you will get it there. If you come to Latin America with patience, you will loose it."

His tips on becoming more culturally competent are:

Have patience. Relax and take it easy.

Humility in your approach to other cultures. Set your assumptions about the other culture apart.

Have compassion for the other culture. Consider it as continuous caring...
