Episode 15_ “Success and Neuro-Diversity in the Workplace”
We talk about the following:
John’s life journey and his thoughts on success and neuro diversity in the workplace -
John struggled in school, turning to drugs and alcohol and spending high school graduation in rehab
After college, John had learned to function successfully on the outside, while still covering up internal dysfunction and internal angst and anxiety and a pattern of destructive behaviors.
Found a fit at a corporation that was hard-charging, high-stakes and disruptive.
After being diagnosed with clinical depression and bipolar disorder, John took a break to work on himself, get sober and medicated.
Began to change his management style, became a certified Clifton’s strengths coach, and began to try to help people on his team become their best selves.
At work, he’s become open and outspoken about neuro-diversity, and the culture has changed around him to support this.
Through his journey, John has become a much better listener, leader, father and more.
Great Quotes: “We need to change the way we talk about mental health in the workplace”
“There’s no end to self-awareness, it’s a constant journey”
John’s #1 Culture-Hack: Hack 1 is keep track every day of how many times you hear somebody say, “Yeah, but” or “Yes, but”, or “However”. Keep track of those, write it down, just make a note. Because when people use those words it gives the listener the impression that you weren’t listening the whole time they were speaking. Hack 2 is keep track of how many times a day you hear people interrupt each other because interruptions beget interruptions.
About Our Guest:
John Birrell-Levine is a tinkerer, a sociologist, an ally for all and spends his life tirelessly working on human evolution. In corporate environments, as a Gallup certified strengths coach and accredited insights discovery practitioner, he uses common language and instruments as a base upon which to build. John also focuses on daily tweaks and hacks people in teams can leverage to shift cultural direction.

Episode 11_ “Culture is What Happens Between All the Spaces”
We talk about the following:
Starting a business as a child
Teachable skills vs. desirable personality traits
Where the hiring process breaks down. Can we create a better system?
Creating an innovative video-interviewing platform that helps companies have a better idea who the candidate is before they walk in the door.
Biggest leadership mistake—trying to replicate yourself instead of tying other people into your team for their own talents and skills and personality.
Great Quotes: “Culture is what happens in between all the spaces”
“Life is a wide-open canvas and you can literally create whatever you want”
Matt’s #1 Culture-Hack: Find that open canvas and if you're a leader, help others create it. If you're somebody who's not sure if you're a leader yet, go create it yourself and you'll have other people who want to join and who love it.

Episode 10_It’s Not About “Are They a Culture-Fit, but Are They a Culture-Add”
We talk about the following:
How you can do really good things for business through Culture
Comfort Research’s “Culture Experience”, tour that they take business leaders on
Culture is important in ANY organization, and HAS to come from the top-down
How even college students can have core values for a culture of one
Tactical tips on how to empower your people to own the values
Those are dream big, take action and make a difference—all three are necessary
The FAB awards! How to influence employees to take action!
Great Quotes:
“And I, we talked to them about what is a great set of core values look like? How does that tie into the strategic plan? And then once you've identified a great set of core values, how do you go about implementing them. And so I get a lot of different people at all different levels within the organization, you know, CEOs, managers, HR people, you know, even people on the manufacturing floor that want to have an impact on culture and want to see how we are doing it.”
“If I wanted people to just agree and say yes, I would get robots”
“A good culture is going to spit out the people that aren't a good add a good fit to that organization. And that's the way it should be. Our retention rate right now is around 96% 96%. People ask us, Hey, are you having a hard time? You know, hiring right now? No!”
Matt’s #1 Culture-Hack: My favorite culture hack is probably just the piece about taking action towards your culture goals. Right? Just do something that you know about it, do something about it every single day, every single week. No matter what, how are you moving towards improving your culture, clearly defining your core values, making it better?

Episode 9_ Alcoholics Anonymous, Ironman and Values
We talk about the following:
Sobriety
How values and purpose in a company need to be done with intention
The connection between radical adventurism and relationships
How the values of Ironman teach you not to judge people on appearance
Good Quotes:
“Any day that's moving along, that I'm not on target to where I said I wanted to go. It's usually because I've let somebody break one of those boundaries and knock me off course a little bit.”
“And there's like 12 steps couldn't be any more simple than that. Don't drink and go to a meeting. And as simple KPI that I had to follow for a long time, don't drink and go to meeting. And if that doesn't work, don't drink and go to another meeting. And do that for 90 days. And if you're not completely satisfied will return your misery. That's what my sponsor told me. So it's funny that now I work with clients on 90 day rhythms. And you know, we set a three year plan, a one year plan, and then 90 days and at the end of our meetings, I'm like, here's your 90 day plan. Just like my sponsor gave me 30 years ago, and maybe that's a little coincidence. Maybe that's a little God's work, maybe. I don't know”
“If I'm clear with where I want to go, if I'm clear with what my values are the rules I'll play by, and I know my purpose in life, and I use those as the filters to making all the decisions, I'm moving forward today.”
Kris’ #1 Culture-Hack: Just remember, much like dating, you don't need to attract the whole world with your values. You only need to attract the right people.

Episode 6_ The Stories We Choose Not to Tell with Special Guest Lori Silverman
We talk about the following:
Technology, Age, Energy and Culture
The importance of people & processes
Storytelling for business—and how the stories we choose not to tell are just as telling as those we choose to tell
Data—it’s importance and it’s misuse
Decision scientists vs. data-scientists & decision intelligence vs. data science .
Lori’s #1 Culture-Hack: Sit back and ask yourself: why am I here, what am I meant to do, and then find work that makes that fulfilling.
About Our Guest:
When radio and TV hosts interviewed Lori Silverman about her book, Stories Trainers Tell, every single one asked: “Can story be used for more than training?” This motivated her to spend the next three years uncovering a variety of business applications, which are in her book, Wake Me Up When the Data Is Over. When her third bestseller, Business Storytelling for Dummies, came out in 2013, it solidified her thought leadership in the field. One chapter developed into a unique framework for transforming data into insight and action, which she speaks about worldwide. As the Shift Strategist, and CEO of Partners for Progress, Lori has helped organizations in 25 different industries strategize about their future and navigate large, messy, complex changes. Jonathan’s #1 Culture-Hack: Be Yourself
About Our Guest:
Jonathan Davey is the organizational Mary Poppins. He is most at home working with teams and organizations in distress and dysfunction. He provides understanding, clarity, and a new mindset which allows individuals to not only recognize but realize their full potential and to appreciate the differences in others in order to establish cohesion and a sustainable plan for success. And then he’s off to the next team or organization that needs him.
Jonathan, Founder and CEO of Intellego (a workplace culture consulting firm), improves the health of organizations by establishing a strengths-based culture. He is dedicated to creating inclusive workplaces that allow people to bring their full authentic selves to work and do what they do best every day. And although he doesn’t claim to be “practically perfect in every way,'' his use and value of the growth mindset model helps him and his clients achieve greatness.
When he's not flying from one workplace to the other, Jonathan enjoys attending community events, trying new restaurants, and traveling.
