Professor Dato Dr ST Kew, the Dean of Clinical School at IMU and Dr David Quek, President of the Malaysian Medical Association, say there are too many medical schools and the government's target of 1 doctor for 900 patients by 2010 is too ambitious (currently 1:400). There is a risk that there will too many doctors which could result in closure of medical schools in 10 years. Shortage of doctors in rural areas need to be addressed.
