The Asian Wall Street Journal Southeast Asia Bureau Chief Patrick Barta gave his views on the release of the world's most famous political prisoner, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who has spent 15 of the last 21 years under house arrest.

He feels Myanmar's military regime wants to take time to see what she'd do next, and if she were to actively denounce the recent election, or otherwise put the regime in a difficult position, chances are they may rearrest her or place restrictions on her movements.

There's been a lot of debate about what she should do next - some counsel her to reign herself in; become more of a social worker. However, her appeal may come from her willingness to confront. From what's been observed in recent days, it looks like Ms Aung intends to pursue an active political role. It's interesting to note that she's talking about sanctions again. Revising sanctions might put her in a position to negotiate with the regime rather than fighting with it.
