Two recent films came out that surprised us in very different ways. First up is Creed, the seventh installment in the Rocky franchise, and a film that did very little for us as far as the trailers were concerned. We discuss what makes it not just a great Rocky movie, but one of the best films of the year. Next is Alejandro González Iñárritu's new film The Revenant in which Leonardo DiCaprio may or may not be sexually assaulted by a bear (spoiler: he is not). With such high expectations, it's easy for a film to disappoint, but that disappointment rarely feels as painful as it does with The Revenant. We sink our teeth into the film's soft underbelly and rip it to pieces. Then it's time to wrap up our Billy Wilder Directors Series with a discussion about his 1960 classic dramedy The Apartment. And as always, we send you to bed (or work) with our latest movie recommendations.

Netflix has strategically (and successfully) changed the way we watch movies and television. Some people fully embrace this new frontier of couch potadom, while others oppose it with fiery passion as there's certainly not anything bigger to worry about. We discuss this phenomenon and what it means for the future of streaming entertainment. Then we take a trip back in time to 1950 with a discussion on Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard as part of our ongoing Billy Wilder Directors Series. This time around 007 has a license to disappoint and we get to the bottom of why this new Bond film has left critics and audiences shaken rather than stirred, and so on (more terrible humor lies in this very episode). We also discuss two new films set in the 1950s that feature wonderful performances from their respective actresses: Brooklyn starring Saoirse Ronan and Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. While the films share the same time period, they remain tonal opposites in all regards and we compare and contrast them accordingly. The big news out of D23 (The Walt Disney Company's expo designed to perpetuate fevered hype) is that there are a lot of animated sequels on the horizon for films you probably already love or tolerate or any have some kind of opinion of between those two extremes. Never hate though... no one is allowed to hate a Disney film, lest they be sent to the official Disney torture chamber, AKA the part of Epcot Center without all the international alcohol choices. Sequels! Do we want 'em? Do we hate 'em? We get to the bottom of things. Then it's time to press play on a brand spankin' new Directors Series as we fix our gaze on the films of Michael Haneke. First up is his 2005 psychological thriller Cache. As if you weren't overloaded with great audio content, we even recommend some new movies for you to check out before the show ends. What a podcast!
