Spring has sprung but we're not quite out of the woods when it comes to bland-to-terrible Hollywood offerings (The Divergent Series: Insurgent, we're looking at you). Fortunately, we live in an age where independent films are more freely available than ever before which means there's a respite to the slop playing at the multiplex. This week we're discussing two of the best films of the year so far that just so happen to have been released by small, indie studios with no star power to speak of - Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter and Spring. After that we get out our anesthesia inhalers, take a deep breath, and discuss David Lynch's sexy, twisted murder-mystery, Blue Velvet as part two of our David Lynch Directors Series. Once the blood has been mopped up we hand out our Weekly Movie Recommendations and call it a day.

We're comparing and contrasting two new films that opened this past weekend: Focus, the Will Smith-fueled conman drama and The Lazarus Effect, the budget-conscious PG-13 horror film starring Olivia Wilde. Surprisingly, there are few surprises! Will Smith charms his way through Focus while The Lazarus Effect fails to have much of an effect at all aside from persuading audiences to avoid it in droves. Then we jack into Kathryn Bigelow's 1995 cyber-punk nightmare (based off a dream James Cameron had in the 80s), Strange Days. How strange are these days? Let me put it this way: Tom Sizemore has his wig ripped off and no one bats an eyelash! Oh my! The 87th Academy Awards have come and gone and we're here picking up the pieces of everyone's broken hearts. That is, if you aren't involved with Birdman, Whiplash, or The Grand Budapest Hotel. Or if you aren't Julianne Moore. You know what, it was a great night for films that actually deserved to be awarded. Of course, the Oscars wouldn't be the Oscars without some nonsense and unbelievably low low points. Neil Patrick Harris did his best to shine up the dreadfully humorless material he was given but to not much avail. After discussing these unlikely wintertime hits, we look toward next week's Oscars ceremony and give our predictions for who will win as well as our personal picks for who should win. In the end, the real winner is you, the listener! Then we start a brand new Director's Series featuring the films of Kathryn Bigelow. In this first installment we're discussing her surf-heist action film Point Break starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze. With characters like that at your film's core, what could possible go wrong? After we recover, we wrap up our Robert Altman Director's Series with a discussion about his 1985 film Fool for Love, based on the play by Sam Shepard.
