With January comes a slew of horrendous movies the studios typically try to sweep under the carpet.  That's not the case for the new Johnny Depp film Mortdecai, which barges into theaters this week with trumpets blasting.  The aggressive promotional campaign for this film neglects to point out that it is, indeed, a piece of crap.  We'll tell you all about it!  Then it's time to start a brand new installment of our Director Series, this time focusing on Robert Altman.  We discuss his 1971 anti-Western, McCabe & Mrs. Miller starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie.  And in case you were wondering, we'd never leave you without our picks for Weekly Movie Recommmendations.

Two of 2014's best films got wide releases this week: Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's drug fueled detective tale Inherent Vice and director Ava DuVernay's Selma which tells the story of Martin Luther King Jr's historic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in order to secure black citizens the right to vote.  Both films take place within a five year span of one another but other than that there are no similarities and we're not just talking about true life versus fiction.  We discuss each film in depth, touching on the highs and lows and whether they ultimately achieve the goals set before them.  As always, we conclude this episode with our picks for Weekly Movie Recommendations.
