This is Haitian Professor Bayyinah Bello’s short lecture on the Haitian Revolution of 1791. Led by Dutty Boukman, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Toussaint Louverture the revolution toppled one of the greatest empires known to man and change the course of history.
Bayyinah Bello is a Haitian historian, teacher, writer, and humanitarian worker, who in her earlier career spent 15 years living and traveling in West Africa, including four years in Nigeria, as well as in Benin, Togo, and other countries in the region.
Now based in Port-au-Prince, she is the founder of an organization for historical research called Fondation Marie-Claire Heureuse Félicité Bonheur Dessalines, popularly known as Fondasyon Félicité, named after Marie-Claire Heureuse Félicité Bonheur Dessalines the Empress consort of Haiti and wife of revolutionary leader of Haiti Jean-Jacques Dessalines. In the aftermath of the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the non-profit organization Friends of Fondation Félicité was set up to directly support FF, focusing on rebuilding the country. She is also a professor of history at the State University of Haiti.

  • The Father of Christian Nationalism Gerard L.K. Smith
On this Episode of Dad Is Not A Noun I was curious about who came up with Christian Nationalism/ Christian Nationalists because in our political climate there’s been a surge of politicans and talking heads who branded themselves Christian Nationalists. So I found out in the late 30s and early 40s Gerard L.K. Smith, a minister and political agitator with racist ideology blended faith and the flag as his Christian Nationalism Crusade which he founded The America First Party. He ran first president in 1944 and lost.. He was very outspoken about being racist and anti-Sesmitic which rallied his base which felt they were losing their country. Sounds similar? Right!!! He started a magazine and radio show called The Cross and Flag, the Christian Nationalist Crusade's magazine, claimed that six million Jews were not killed in death camps in Europe during World War II but instead immigrated to the United States during the war. He passed away in 1976, but his legacy is strong in the surge of Christian Nationalists today. Here's an audio of his radio show with his wife.

  • The History of Gullah Gullah Island
Thank you @Defunctland for the content on The History of Gullah Gullah Island.. Gullah Gullah Island was educational like other preschool shows airing at the time, but its lessons went beyond counting and learning the alphabet. Similar to Sea Island Montage, the series primarily sought to teach audiences about the real culture of the Gullah people, a group of Black Americans descended from enslaved Africans brought to the Sea Islands of South Carolina centuries ago. It was unlike any series Nickelodeon—or any other American network—had ever produced.
The concept was a hit with kids and adults: The series ran for 70 episodes and received numerous awards and nominations. For many children watching Nick Jr. in the 1990s, the show was their introduction to a vibrant culture. For Ron and Natalie Daise, it was their life.
