Now Dr. Zeitlin has joined the Dads Toolbox team and we will continue to bring him back in the future as well to talk about the many mental health issues that all of us deal with as dads. 

Depression is something that can impact all of us at sometime in our lives. The holidays are particularly hard for many, especially if you have lost someone or have had other issues that have compounded during the year. Dr. Zeitlin shares some valuable insights into things to look for in yourself, your family and friends and how to support people impacted by depression during this time of year. If you are questioning whether you may have depression or if someone that you care about may, look at the National Alliance on Mental Illness for a great list of causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.

Seasonal affective disorder is something that definitely impacts many people this time of year. It truly is mood disorder that occurs when the weather becomes colder and sticks around until warmer weather returns. People with SAD feel depressed during the shorter days of winter, and more cheerful and energetic during the brightness of spring and summer. The great thing about this disorder is that it is completely treatable with lights such as [amazon text=this&asin=B004JF3G08]. many people find that just sitting in front of lamps like this completely changes their personality and outlook on the world around them. Damon Gameau creator, director and actor within the eye-opening documentary, That Sugar Film joins us for this week’s Dads Spotlight to tell us more about his movie, his journey as a father and shares thoughts on how you can be the best dad possible. 

Damon Gameau shared some very sobering facts such as what you see here in the post today. It was remarkable to us to see the amount of sugar that we eat in an entire day, sometimes without even knowing it. Think about it, 40 grams of sugar a day, that was what the average person was eating.

 

When you look at the images and consider whether you would eat that much sugar alone, you probably would say no, wouldn’t you? I mean 6.6 teaspoons of sugar in a can of coke. I know it tastes good, but you would eat 6.6 teaspoons right now if we gave them to you? Now, we are not standing on a soap box here, far from it. We simply want to inform you all of the reality around us, so that you and your family can make informed decisions about the future.

 

Damon Gameau also shared some of his thoughts on fatherhood as well as his plans on the future now that the book and movie have been well received.

In this episode of The Dads Toolbox, we are talking about creating perfect holiday cards for your family with Adam Cohen of DaDaRocks.com. Adam Cohen will be a recurring guest with us bringing his expertise from many years of photography to help you be a better photographer and capture images that you will love to keep for years to come! 

Being that Adam Cohen grew up working in a photography store, is married to Suzanne Cohen who is a professional photographer in NYC and writes at GothamLove.com and also has been a brand ambassador for Samsung as a part of their Samsing Imagelogger program, we knew that he had a ton of information that he could share with you.

Adam shared some great tips and hints about how to set up and take amazing holiday cards with us today. He talked a lot about the importance of taking some time to think out what you want from your holiday cards. Adam Cohen mentioned that you should always consider the following when thinking about your holiday cards.

* Setting – Where do you want the card to be set. What background would be perfect?

* Lighting – Outside, Inside – Depending on the answer you will have to think about time of day and shadows that may come with that.

* Clothing – Do you want everyone to match? Is there a theme for the card?

Adam Cohen also talked about how you could even build your own backdrop for your own holiday cards such as he did in the below picture (He learned about this from reading about it on a BabyRabies.com post). While it may seem hard, Adam mentioned that it was actually quite easy.

Adam Cohen talked about one of the companies that he loves using when creating his own family holiday cards was Minted.com. Check out their Foil-Pressed Holiday Cards for a great idea of why Adam Cohen loves their products!

In this episode we had the chance to interview Casey Petersen who is a father as well as a Family Safety, social media and internet expert about online safety for our kids.

 

In talking to Casey Petersen we were able to get some great hints and resources from him on how to set up your kids for online safety.

 

On the the tools he was excited about was Windows 8 & 10’s built in Parent Controls – He said that he uses them all the time, and they’re really fantastic, you even get weekly reports on your kids activities, like how many hours they watched Netflix.  It’s called Family Safety in Windows 10, and it’s really improved.

 

If you use a MAC, iOS has great settings built in, but Casey Petersen mentioned that for a Parent-level enterprise-like solution, Parentkit.co is pretty cool.  The built-in stuff is free though, and it is pretty thorough and works well.

 

Disney Imagicademy is a fantatic suite of apps and products.  Casey Peterson’s youngest child LOVES every single app they’ve made, and their new lines of learning toys is great. It’s geared towards early childhood primarily.

 

The final resource that he talked about that we wanted to share was YouTube Kids. If your kids are like most, they may love watching YouTube videos, but the problem with the main channel is that sometimes searching benign terms can get your results you do not want. While there are some safeguards you can set up in search settings, YouTube kids is geared just for kids and the content is great and very age appropriate and kid friendly!

In this episode we had the chance to interview Sascha Paladino, creator and executive producer of Disney Junior’s “Miles from Tomorrowland,” an intergalactic animated series that follows the outer space voyages of young adventurer Miles and his family as they help connect the universe on behalf of the Tomorrowland Transit Authority.

 

An accomplished children’s television writer, Paladino was most recently story editor and consulting producer on Disney Junior’s “[amazon text=Henry Hugglemonster&asin=B00FNPQW5Y].” Paladino developed and served as head writer and producer for Nickelodeon’s “[amazon text=Ni Hao, Kai-lan&asin=B003XEKXXO].” His additional writing credits include Disney Junior’s acclaimed “[amazon text=Doc McStuffins&asin=B00BJ4BU50],” “[amazon text=Team Umizoomi&asin=B00D3ZCZPW],” “[amazon text=Wonder Pets&asin=B0104WZKK8],” “[amazon text=Winx Club&asin=B00H0EN9BQ],” “[amazon text=Tickety Toc&asin=B00M3MCWIG],” “[amazon text=Blue’s Clues&asin=B00JBFC2GU]” and “[amazon text=Sid the Science Kid&asin=B00AMA8GH2].” Paladino also wrote the theme song lyrics for “Henry Hugglemonster” and “Ni Hao, Kai-lan,” among many songs for other series.

 

Chris talked to Sascha Paladino about the series but more importantly about him as a father. It was a great interview and he shares so much about his own experiences that led him to creating a series showing the world the way he wants it to be for his own kids!
