One of the major things we do as soon to be dad or being a new dad is Worry. This comes in all different forms. We worry about their health, their sleep, that they are going to the bathroom, all kinds of stuff. Probably the biggest area of worry and concern is the safety of your child. Episode 72 is all about safety.
I recall being so delicate with my first child (my son). It was like he was a porcelain doll. I was so careful picking him up, setting him down. Being so careful with everything. You are constantly worried about their safety.
In this episode we cover 2 major areas of safety: Care Seats & Baby Proofing the House
This episode came about because my son just turned 8 this past weekend. In California, at age 8, you now longer need a booster seat. He can also sit in the front seat. It's a major change in his world and was pretty exciting for him. It also makes it a little easier for us as it's one less thing to worry about having everywhere you go.
1) Car Seats
I'm not sure if it is like this everywhere, but our hospital required to check out our car seat to make sure we had one before we could take the baby out of the hospital. If you have never been around kids, figuring it out for the first time can be a little difficult. They make them pretty simple now with all kinds of detachable features and options.
If you don't know how to do it, you can visit a police station and ask for a child passenger safety technician
There are also Child Safety Seat Fitting Stations
California Law -
* Children under the age of 8 must be secured in a car seat or booster seat in the back seat.
* Children who are 8 years of age OR have reached 4' 9" in height must be secured by a safety belt in the back seat.
* Effective January 1, 2017 - Children under 2 years of age shall ride in a rear-facing car seat unless the child weighs 40 or more pounds OR is 40 or more inches tall. The child shall be secured in a manner that complies with the height and weight limits specified by the manufacturer of the car seat.
New York State law requires that
* all children under the age of 4 ride in child safety seats
* all children ride in child restraint systems until their 8th birthday
Overall, you just want to make sure you child is safe and you are following the laws where you live.
Baby proofing the house
You wouldn't believe that there is an entire industry based on making sure a house is a safe place for a baby. Even before you find out you are pregnant and you start thinking about a family, you start to evaluate the place where you are living to determine if it's good for a baby. The real kicker is when they begin to crawl and move around. It then gets even more worrisome when they begin to walk.
We had to build a fence around our pool.
Are their stairs? We are going to need a gate, both at the top and bottom of the stairs?
Is there a glass coffee table or any table at their height? It may need padding around it or we need to replace it
Are there electrical outlets? Yes, 500 of them and we are going to need to spend money on tiny plastic pieces that go into the outlets.
Door handles? Well we need safety handles to make sure they can't open the doors?
You have kid that is a drawer opener? There needs to be safety mechanisms on the drawer to make sure they can't open it.
They figured out the safety handles or drawer openers? Then you just need to put the child in a cage until they are 5 years old. Just Kidding!
There are all kinds of devices and tips dealing with hot water, toilets, cords, and more.
