Dad Without Borders episodes

  • Eric - Being Dad as Adventurous Social Media Influencer and Real Life Captain Fantastic
Eric is a Dad that trusts his instincts and dives into adventures with his family, often based out of an old school bus. He really is the modern day Captain Fantastic (a film I encourage you to watch). Living in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains in Western Canada, as a ski patroller and paramedic Eric found that he had a growing following on social media as he documented his kids skiing, sharing the edits on YouTube and Instagram. Find out how his social media blew up and how he navigates life as a parent. A refreshing and interesting perspective and a Dad I always enjoy connecting with!
It's another content rich show with two parts:
Part 1: insightful conversation with another special guest Dad, Eric, talking about risk, adventure, building a social media business with his free-range adventurous lifestyle, homeschooling the kids, forests schools and learning to see his partner as a woman and not just as the Mother of his children, to nurture that relationship too.
Part 2: the debrief with professional feedback is provided by one of our in-house specialists, psychologist Todd Kettner, about the topic of trust when it comes to parenting.

  • Seth - Dad as Nelson Tiny Homes Master Carpenter & the Challenges of Adulting
It's another content rich show with two parts:
Part 1: insightful conversation with another special guest Dad, Seth from Nelson Tiny Houses discusses the challenges of communicating, the flood of emotions as a parent, anger management, the financial stress of parenting, finding a perfect lifestyle for the kids, challenges of being a Dad and a business owner, screen time (or not?) for kids and much more...read more below
Part 2: the debrief with professional feedback is provided by one of our in-house specialists, psychologist Todd Kettner, about how to deal with anger and the benefits of counselling...read more below
Part 1: Seth talks honestly about transitioning into parenthood after many years travelling around the world as a free spirit with his partner and now wife and Mother Katie, the "main parent" to their two young children. Not that Seth isn't parenting but he's often working 7 days a week running his Nelson Tiny Houses business with over 40,000 followers on Youtube (check it out: https://www.youtube.com/c/nelsontinyhouses). Seth is starting to find balance, spending more time camping with the family but it's not always been easy. Like so many Dads (and Moms) jumping into the ocean of parenthood, Seth has been treading water while dealing with a fountain of emotions that have tested his relationships and his cool exterior. He freely admits to not being the best planner and the real life struggles of keeping on top of finances while building a successful business, while running from the bureaucracy of it all! Overall, Seth is a passionate Dad who, with his wife, has managed to carve out a beautiful wholesome life for his kids and he (and his wife) are shining examples that all the hard work pays off!
Part 2: Todd opens up and shares some personal history as we discuss the stigma around men seeking professional help when dealing with anger issues and other parenting or challenges that Dads may face!

  • Brendan - Dad Creates the Ultimate Substitute for Coffee & Launches New Business with Young Kids
It's another content rich show with two parts:
Part 1 insightful conversation with another special guest Dad, Brendan discusses finding balance with young kids as their new business takes off and their second child is about to be born...read more below

Part 1: Baby number two is on the way! How does Brendan balance family life as his new business takes off, as demand for his alternative coffee grows. Rich in flavour and full of goodness it has all the ingredients of his parenting style but this family of three (plus dogs!) is about to become a family of four. The clock is ticking as the birth of their new child grows closer. Brendan maintains his calm exterior but inside is he panicking? Perhaps his new product Raven Roast really is the secret to calming the nerves? He's just "in the pocket" so why not have another kid? The first kid might break you but once you are "in the pocket" the second kid doesn't seem so scary. Right?
Brendan talks about transitioning into parenting and accepting the grief of giving up your old life. What happens if you resist the transition and what impact will this have on your relationship with your partner?
Topics include: building a career, valuing the non-paid work in the home, and finding the right location to have kids, timing is everything, the importance of therapy for the mind and the body, environmental concerns when choosing where to raise your family, amongst other things...
Part 2: Emotional connection to our work and the impact that has on our kids - a great discussion with Todd Kettner our in house psychologist. Career vs Job, finding your passion and the portfolio of life.

  • Jeremy - Being Dad in Canada's Adventure Capital and Sleeping as a Family
It's another content rich show with two parts:
Part 1 insightful conversation with another special guest Dad
Part 2 the debrief with professional feedback provided by one of our in-house specialists
Part 1: Location, location, location. Living in Squamish, Canada's climbing mecca in the Sea to Sky corridor, just north of Vancouver, means that Jeremy gets to climb 3 or 4 times a week. Not bad for a full time Dad that works as a teacher. Nestled between the Coastal Mountains and the Pacific Ocean with easy access to endless mountain and ocean pursuits, this is prime real estate which means a busy life to pay the bills and keep up with the family while Jeremy and his wife-ish person Mandoline, work conflicting schedules. Sometimes.
As more people escape the city in search of a better quality of life, the lure of the mountains means a sea of newcomers which has increased the cost of living. Jeremy reflects on the question of affordability and he expresses gratitude that they can juggle the life they have to create a great experience for their young daughter while also pursuing their passions.
Topics include: falling into parenting without a plan; learning to let go of expectations; balancing family life with a busy schedule; affordability as the cost of living increases; sleeping as a family (the dog is invited too); early morning training rituals; amongst other things...
Part 2: An educated discussion with Clinical Social Worker Catherine Williams about the essential topic for parents with babies and young children - sleep!

  • Guy - English Dad Surviving a Pandemic and Adulting as a Parent in his 50s
An Englishman living on the borders of Wales raising two young boys with his wife, reflects on parenting through a pandemic with both parents working full time. Guy is the Executive Director of Mountain Training England and as an ex teacher, Guy is ready for any challenge involving teenagers but he's no expert with babies. While his wife runs a tight ship with the young kids, Guy is all hands on deck but has a different attitude with a more laidback approach and can't wait for the dreaded teenage years. It does just get better (and easier?) right? Guy has some wisdom to share becoming a Dad later in life and also shares insights with his background in teaching when it comes to introducing children to learning. It's a fun and thoughtful conversation with an old friend and colleague. Please enjoy!

  • Kirkland - Health & Wellness Expert, Life Coach, Elder & Granddaddy
As a certified guide and life coach, directing one of the world's top fitness retreats and health spas, Kirkland is an engaged Grandaddy to 5 young children and he is now in his third marriage while maintaining a close relationship with all his adult kids that he raised in the eclectic mountain town of Nelson, British Columbia. Kirkland has wisdom to share.
Practicing meditation since he was 17, with a reverence for nature and a community oriented parent who has been involved in a local men's group for the last 30 years, I could have talked to Kirkland and listened to his mindful reflections of parenting for the rest of the day. There is so much to learn from the elders in our community as they reflect on their parenting stories, and their triumphs as Dads. I am very happy that Kirkland is the first Grandaddy to join the podcast and he wont be the last! Please enjoy!

  • Secure Attachment, Long Distance Parenting & Raising Healthy Kids
This is a great episode for Dads that face separation from their kids due to work or life situations. Great news - you can successfully parent from a distance and build and/or maintain a secure attachment! In fact any parent will find this episode useful no matter what age your kids are...and great news for any parents that weren't able to establish a secure attachment when your kids were young, it is never too late!
I am talking with Catherine who is a Master of Social Work and a Registered Clinical Social Worker with over 20 years experience working with children and families. I have worked with Catherine and she has been a great resource in helping me support and maintain secure attachment with my young son when he transitioned to a new home overseas as well as working with my wife to help our toddler transition to day care which is not always an easy thing for child or parent.

About Dad Without Borders

From the publisher's feed

Modern fatherhood meets mountain grit. I’m Blue, host of Dad Without Borders — a podcast about raising kids across continents, navigating blended families, and staying connected against the odds. After losing custody of my eldest son, I found creative ways to keep our bond strong — even picking up a skateboard in my 40s so we had something to share across oceans. Each episode dives into the resilience and creativity of dads rewriting the fatherhood story, blending practical tools with soulful connection. This is fatherhood without borders.
