I thought the worst thing that could happen had already happened. My three-year-old had been hit by a car. He almost died. And somehow… that wasn't the end of it.

Chapter 5 picks up in the hospital, on the night before my son was finally supposed to come home. The Spider-Man blanket — and the moment he realized I'd moved on. Why my son's father suddenly HAD to leave to go get "car insurance" while our child lay in a hospital bed. The grandfather who reappeared after years of being frozen out (I thought it was forgiveness — it wasn't). Papers handed to me in a hallway, and the lawyer who said "Gina, I'm so sorry… but they're real." The two allegations I'll never forget — and why the most believable lies always have a little truth buried inside them. Being "allowed" to accompany my own child.

You know what's really fucking annoying? Growth. I've grown enough. Every time you become a stronger, wiser woman, God goes "Amazing, she learned that lesson — let's absolutely fuck her week up and see if it stuck." I'm tired. Give me Botox and peace.

This episode was supposed to be the next chapter of my story. For the first time in ten weeks, I couldn't do it — because my brain couldn't go back into old trauma when it was busy with brand-new trauma.

This is the story of what just happened to me. A program I believed in. A question I asked out loud that I wasn't supposed to ask. Getting thrown out — and then finding out a completely different version of why was being told to everyone. It's about being the person who says the true thing and instantly becomes the villain. And it's about the moment you realize: you fucked with the wrong bitch.

    📍 Chapter 4 of Gina's story (Episode 9). New here? Start at Episode 1 → https://daddy-tissues.captivate.fm/episode/im-fcking-doing-this

This is the chapter I almost didn't tell.

Last chapter ended on a normal fall night in Northeast Philly — leaves in the orange pumpkin bags, mac and cheese on the stove, a kiss on my son's head before I left for the gym. And then my phone rang. My actual next-door neighbor, completely out of breath: "Your son got hit by a car."

I thought he was messing with me. He wasn't. And when I asked "Is he okay?" — over and over — he wouldn't answer me. There is no way to explain where your mind goes when somebody won't answer that question.

This is the story of that night and the eleven days that followed. The ambulance that appeared out of nowhere like God dropped it in front of me and said "follow that." The phone call from HER — the get-out-of-jail-free sister — that I can still hear word for word twenty years later. Holding my baby's hand on a stretcher. And the waiting room scene that looked like a Jerry Springer episode.

Today is a celebration. Pour yourself some champagne — I've reached the magical level of podcasting where people are angry about things I didn't say, names I didn't use, and jokes they've decided to treat like sworn testimony. So this one opens with a little fan mail: a toast to the haters, a quick word with God (we're boys, we get each other), and the one thing I need everybody to understand — you can love people and still tell the truth about what happened to you. Both things can be true at the same time.

Then we get back in the time machine. Chapter 2 ended with me going into labor at 18. This chapter is what came home from the hospital with me: a baby I loved more than my own life, and a relationship where I had to fight for permission to be my own son's mother. The flowers that vanished to a house I never agreed to live in. The 3 a.m. calls. The beginning of the pattern that would run the next sixteen years.

    📍 Chapter 2 of Gina's story (Episode 7). New here? Start at Episode 1 → https://daddy-tissues.captivate.fm/episode/im-fcking-doing-this

I'm 18 years old and I'm sitting in a basket of dirty laundry. Not next to it. IN it. In my mother's cellar, following her around the house all day like a puppy, because I have something to tell her and I physically cannot get the words out.

Chapter 1 ended with one word on the morning of my 18th birthday: pregnant. This week you get the whole story. Five positive tests and a due date instead of a keg party. The get-out-of-jail-free card his sister put on the table — and the reason I couldn't take it: a psychic with a glass eye, a miracle baby, and my mother's voice from a random Tuesday in our kitchen. And then my mom turns around in that cold Northeast Philly cellar and says the two words I never got to say.

What comes after is nine months of everything falling apart in slow motion: a father who went silent, a boy who wasn't who I thought he was, one accidental phone call that told me everything, and a "perfect" family whose foundation I never checked before I built on it.

I'm 17 years old, standing in an art supply store outside the city, talking to a boy I met five seconds ago. My mom is behind me going "Gina, stop." And I look this complete stranger dead in the eye and say: "Who is Vicky?"

What he said broke my heart into a million pieces for the very first time.

Welcome to Chapter 1. I told you I'd tell my story from the beginning, and I keep my promises. Time machine to Northeast Philly: the loving chaos, 70 lates a year, Sister Helen, the perfect-little-girl checklist. My dad's story — the part that's mine to tell. My first soulmate, who we're calling Coolio. The most important sentence in this episode: kids don't do what you say, they do what you allow. And the day 17-year-old me chose herself for the very first time.

It ends on the morning of my 18th birthday with a bombshell you are not ready for.

A couple of days ago my phone rang. My cousin — an amazing human, a very important person in my life — and I could tell by her voice something was off. Then came the words that always come right before a bomb drops: "I'm always hesitant to tell you these things because I don't want it to be hurtful."

My whole body was on fire before she'd even said it.

This is the episode where I'm real to the bone. The woman who felt like a second mother when I was growing up. The fallout that happened after my divorce. What it feels like when family love turns out to have terms and conditions — and what someone who helped raise me actually thinks about me and this podcast.

It's about truth, grief, family judgment, and what happens when someone attacks the packaging because they cannot attack the truth inside it.

There's nothing like a fresh bottle of nail polish — smooth, clean, untouched, before anyone's contaminated it. But leave it in a drawer long enough and it goes thick, crusty, expired. Most people toss it. Gina the fixer? She pours in a little acetone and shakes it back to life. Sound familiar?

This week, Gina turns a bottle of polish into the most accurate metaphor for fear, hoarding, and that man you keep trying to revive that you'll never hear from. Surviving childhood hoarding ("Barb, pull the car around") to the real reason we hold onto old jeans, old beliefs, and old relationships way past their expiration date — this one's about the fears we were never actually born with. Turns out we come into this world with only two, and moms conquer both of them before breakfast. Everything else? We learned it. And anything you learned, you can unlearn. Grab your tissues, girls. It's time to stop pouring acetone into assholes and start choosing you.

    In this episode:

    • The nail-polish theory of why you can't let anything go
    • Hoarding as a generational hand-me-down nobody asked for
    • Why "loyalty" and "not giving up" are often just fear in a costume
    • The only two fears humans are born with — and why moms crush both daily
    • How we recreate our parents' relationships without realizing it
    • Staying for the kids vs. leaving for the kids
    • Why it's never too late to cleanse the bottle and start over

Follow & share: New episodes of Daddy Tissues drop every Monday. If this one hit a nerve, send it to the friend who's still shaking a bottle that should've been tossed two seasons ago — and follow so you never miss one.

If you want to give your daughters some kick-ass birth control, park them in a comfy chair with a blanket and tell them my story. But that's coming. Today is about the feeling that says "I want to fuck his face off" — otherwise known as chemistry.

You read every book. You went to therapy. You drank the Kool-Aid and carried around the giant embarrassing water bottle. And then he walks in with the right eyes and the right chaos, and it's like morphine-acid-kryptonite-crack straight into your veins. So what IS that? Love at first sight — or your childhood trauma being pushed through your bloodstream by the little mad scientist I lovingly call Mr. Trauma?

This one's about the most inconvenient truth in dating after divorce: danger feels incredible, butterflies might be a warning, and the high we chase is sometimes just a starved nervous system finally getting fed. But it's not a lecture about settling for the beige-wall guy. It's the real question: can love be electric AND safe?

I'm doing this. I am fucking doing this.

I just got divorced, turned 40, I have three kids, a lifetime of trauma, and a microphone I barely know how to use. I literally just learned how to post an Instagram story. I am completely unqualified — and somehow I know I'm the most qualified person on earth to do this show.

This is the first episode. It's about why: the lump in your throat when someone asks what's wrong. The husband fight that ends with you crying in a Target parking lot. Holding it together while someone gaslights you — and then getting called crazy the second you finally explode. The supermom on Instagram who secretly wants a week alone in a hospital. Twenty years as a hairstylist doing therapy with foils in women's heads. And the day 40 hit me like a smack in the face and I realized I had all the stuff — the degree, the wedding, the jawline, the trampoline — and had never once asked myself if I was okay.

To everyone who knows me and is currently having a panic attack: yes, Gina has a microphone. Everyone remain calm. I'm not here for revenge. I'm here for the truth — the kind that hurts coming out and then finally lets you breathe.
