Profitable Preaching

1 Corinthians 14:1-5

The fruit of profitable preaching is edification, exhortation, and comfort for the church. One of the Pastor’s duties is to lead and feed the church of God. Paul, the apostle instructed Timothy to “Study to shew thyself approved under God”

2 Timothy 2:15

Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

The Greatest Gift of All

At the conclusion of his chapter on the gifts of the Spirit, after having admonished his readers to "desire the best gifts," Paul then promises to show them the way that is superior to all others—love.

The Unity is in Diversity

1 Corinthians 12:12-31

Paul is not yet through with the discussion of the gifts of the Spirit, but he now builds on what he has already said as he addresses the problems of divisions in the church and makes a case for unity. The continuing need for the church with all its diversity is to find a basis for oneness.

Each Believer is Gifted

1 Corinthians 12:1-11

This particular chapter can be of great help to Christians and churches today in their effort to build unity within the fellowship. We see all around us in the world the principle of which Paul speaks. We go to an athletic event where there are several players on one team. And while they have different positions to play and differing skills, that very fact is the source of their unity and the thing that makes it possible for them to play the game. The same is true when we go to the symphony. There is great variety in the instruments played and the skills required of the players, but all those instruments and all those different musicians create a musical unity as they give a concert.

Remember What the Lord's Supper Really is

1 Corinthians 11:23-34

Paul's method for correcting the abuse is to go back to the very beginning and to remind his readers of the Last Supper's institution and meaning. In four verses he reminds his readers how it all started and what its original purpose was.

The unworthy partakers

No one is worthy. He is addressing the unsaved and the unclean. If you want to partake in the Lord’s supper, get saved ( John 3:16). If you are saved but unclean, confess and forsake your sin ( 1 John 1:9).

Don't Let Differences Undermine Your Worship

1 Corinthians 11:17-22

The early church had developed a very lovely tradition in connection with the observance of the Lord's Supper. They had a meal that was called a Love Feast to which each member brought what he or she was able to share. The resources were then pooled, and the whole church sat down to a common meal which provided a beautiful picture of the oneness they shared in Christ. It was a way of creating and developing real Christian fellowship in the church. Then, in connection with the meal, the Lord's Supper was celebrated. This had a certain naturalness to it since Christ had instituted the practice at the close of the Jewish Passover meal.

The problem was this got out of hand. Instead of sharing, they were separating.

Put Freedom in Proper Contex

1 Corinthians 10:23-33

While Paul was writing mainly about the subject of food offered to idols, the way in which he stated the principle, "or whatever you do" verse 31, suggests that it has a much broader application. Can you imagine what would happen in all situations of strife within the church if we would agree from the very beginning to binding arbitration with the agreed-upon principle being "whatever will give God the most glory." Because of the neglect of this principle, so much good is left undone, and so much strife is begun.

Be Sensitive to Traditions and Customs

1 Corinthians 11:1-16

It had been the custom in the synagogue and in some pagan temples for women in attendance to cover their heads. In the Jewish tradition, the covering represented a distinction in dress to acknowledge the difference between men and women. The women were also seated separately from the men and were not allowed to recite the lesson aloud with the men. Some of the members in Corinth were from this Jewish background and had unconsciously brought with them much of their tradition. The Preacher's Commentary

Don't Flirt with Idolatry

1 Corinthians 10:14-22

The earliest mention of the Lord's Supper comes here and in the next chapter, but Paul's purpose is neither to detail how it was instituted nor to show how it was used in the early church. Rather, he gives it as an argument for Christian unity and against Christians having anything to do with the worship of idols.
