One of the projects in Detroit that's gotten a lot of attention locally and nationally is the proposed removal of the I-375 freeway in downtown Detroit and turning it back into something that fits with the fabric of a community.
Eric Larson, head of the Downtown Detroit Partnership, sat down with us in studio to share his thoughts on why the I-375 project is more than just a standard infrastructure upgrade. Initially conceived as a bridge repair effort, the project has evolved into a significant opportunity to reimagine Detroit's transportation landscape.
With support from the Biden administration and a $105 million federal commitment, the project aims to reconnect communities, enhance pedestrian-friendliness, and address past harms inflicted on historic neighborhoods like Black Bottom and Paradise Valley.
The conversation covers the Downtown Detroit Partnership's role in ensuring the project reflects the city's broader vision for sustainable urban development. Larson discusses the balance between maintaining traffic flow for major events and creating a livable environment for everyday residents. He emphasizes the importance of community engagement and innovative traffic management solutions to address concerns about speed and access.
The episode also touches on the potential integration of the I-375 project with the separate I-75 caps initiative, highlighting the need for coordinated urban planning to maximize benefits for Detroit's diverse communities. With construction slated to begin next year, Larson urges listeners to participate in upcoming community meetings and provide input on the project's future.

We dive into the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, including the importance of organizing and community engagement in shaping the city's future. Orlando talks about the need for leaders who can navigate these changes with a focus on love for the people and a strong policy agenda for both the city and the region.

There has been a lot of talk about growing Detroit, Southeast Michigan and Michigan's economy through startups and technology. But how do you actually do it - not just here, but in a number of cities across the country that aren't Silicon Valley, Seattle, New York City or other existing hubs?
I thought I'd get some outside perspective with some experience dealing with Michigan, in Brian McCullough. Not only is he the founder and host of the daily Techmeme Ride Home podcast (among others), he's an enterpreneur, investor, and internet historian.
We have a very real conversation about the topic, with a lot of experience and perspective.
Full transcript will be available on our website, dailydetroit.com

A full house as Jer, Norris and Devon are all in.
First, Detroit mayor Mike Duggan is not seeking another term. We break down what it means for the city and the kinds of candidates we'd like to see to push Detroit forward (and two of us are current city residents, one is a former one but works every day in the city). Some of the considerations include - do they have the competency to handle a two-billion dollar plus budget?
Although Mayor Duggan has made a lot of progress, there's still a lot more work to do.
Then, we get into talking about the new FanDuel offer of individual Pistons and Red Wings games for $6.99. Should local sports be free to watch to reach the most people and compete with the NFL?

We'll look at why the messaging didn't work well, and some of the number of reasons why Kamala Harris lost the election. We'll also talk about how some people voted for different parties for different jobs in Michigan, and how podcasts helped change people's minds.
Even though things are uncertain, we'll keep sharing with you important stories about Detroit and nearby areas. There's a race for governor coming as well as an election for mayor and council of Detroit.
