    Setback

is a problem or difficulty that delays your progress. It doesn’t mean failure. It simply means something has slowed you down.

    Examples:

1- After weeks of healthy habits, he got sick and had to stop exercising for a while. It was frustrating, but he reminded himself it was only a setback.

2- Learning a language can include many setbacks — moments when progress feels slow or difficult. But setbacks are part of the journey.

    Call someone names

means to insult them by using rude or hurtful words.

    Examples:

1- During the debate, instead of explaining his ideas, he started calling his opponent names. The conversation quickly became less respectful.

2- Sometimes when people feel hurt or frustrated, they react by calling someone names, they react by namecalling instead of expressing their real feelings. By the way, name calling is the noun form.

The more people who witness a problem, the less likely each individual is to help.

    Blind Spot

A “blind spot” is something we cannot easily see or recognize about ourselves or a situation.

    Examples:

1- Sometimes our biggest blind spots are about ourselves. We may think we’re being patient or fair, while others experience us very differently.

2- In relationships, people sometimes have blind spots too. They may not realize how their habits affect the people around them.

    Preemptively

means doing something before a problem or situation happens, in order to prevent it or manage it early.

    Examples:

1- He sent a message to his friend preemptively, explaining why he might arrive late, so there wouldn’t be confusion later.

2- Sometimes acting preemptively can prevent bigger problems later. It shows awareness and care.

    Outlier

is something that is very different from the rest of a group — something that doesn’t follow the usual pattern. It can be a number, a person, or even a life situation.

    Examples:

1- Most people in his family were quiet and reserved. But he was loud, expressive, and loved being around people. In many ways, he felt like the outlier in the family.

2- Sometimes in life, we compare ourselves to people who are outliers — the rare success stories that seem to break every rule. But an outlier is not the average. It’s the exception.

Have your ducks in a row

means to have everything organized and prepared before you start something important.

    Examples:

1- Before applying for the job, he made sure he had his ducks in a row — his resume updated, his references ready, and his portfolio prepared.

2- Before traveling abroad, they got their ducks in a row — checking passports, booking tickets, and organizing their documents.

    Food for thought

is an idea or comment that makes you think deeply. It’s something worth reflecting on. It doesn’t always change your life.  But it stays in your mind.

1- He read a line in a book: “If it costs your peace, it’s too expensive.”
That was real food for thought.

2- Someone asked, “If you weren’t afraid of failing, what would you try?”
That question stayed with him for days.  Definitely food for thought.
