Since launching Liberation Day in early April, several countries, most notability South Korea and Japan, have come to the negotiating table, seeking to lessen tariffs, levied across the board, by the Trump administration.

The stock market has recently recovered, somewhat.  

And now, President Trump says he’s willing to lower tariffs on China.

Many on the Left were quick to blast Trump, saying things like, “Oh, he’s caving. This was all unnecessary.”

Bottom line: The Trump administration’s “trade war” wasn’t really a “war” at all, “It was just an effort to stop a 50-year-cycle of chronic American trade deficits that had harmed the industrial interior”, argues Victor Davis Hanson on today’s edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words:

“Now the Left says, ‘Oh, he's caving, he's caving. This was all unnecessary.’ You could interpret it that way. But it's more likely "Art of the Deal." In other words, we're going to invade Panama, but we're not going to invade Panama. We just want Panama to let American companies run the exit and the entry to the canal—and that's probably going to happen.

“Canada's going to be the 51st state. No. It's not going to be the 51st state. But Canada should defend themselves and pay 2% of their GDP, and they need to address a $65-$100 billion deficit.

“But, we want to absorb Greenland. No. We don't. We want Denmark—a colonial power with this huge North American colony—we want them to help them a little bit. And indeed, they're starting to put Greenland on their imperial flags, and they gave them a billion dollars, and the base is secure. And the Greenland people, 50,000 or so, will want U.S. security. So, that is the ‘Art of the Deal.’”

For decades, Americans were warned about the severe consequences trade deficits would bring if left unchecked. However, a booming economy, low debt and rising incomes kept fears at bay.

Not anymore. The current economic reality paints a much starker picture argues Victor Davis Hanson on today’s edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words:”

“ We are being crushed by budget deficits, national deficits, and trade deficits. … Trade deficits matter. We gotta get them down because we have no room to maneuver, given our budget and our national debt.

“Look at the budget—just to go back to that year—25 years ago, we were running—I can't believe it—a $236 billion surplus. This was the Grand [Newt] Gingrich, speaker of the House, Bill Clinton budget that was still in effect. We were adding to our national wealth by 2.4% plus of GDP. Now we're running a $1.8 to $2 trillion annual deficit.”

By May 7, all U.S. citizens are supposed to have their federally required “Real ID” so that they can travel by air or enter a federal building. But what about using them to register to vote to ensure they are legally present in the country and eligible to vote in our elections?

The SAVE Act, introduced by Republican Texas Rep. (and University of Virginia alumnus) Chip Roy, recently passed the U.S. House of Representatives and now is awaiting action in the Senate. The SAVE Act, among other things, would require proof of citizenship for voter registration in federal elections and strengthen verification processes to ensure voter rolls only contained eligible citizen voters.

The Daily Signal sat down with former Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security, former Virginia Attorney General, and current National Chairman of the Election Transparency Initiative Ken Cuccinelli to talk about the bill’s likelihood of making it to President Donald Trump’s desk.

Does Harvard really want the Trump administration to air their dirty laundry?

On Monday, Harvard University filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its withholding of $2 billion in federal grants, saying the action was “unlawful.”

The Trump administration hasn’t budged on its list of demands, which include holding antisemitic student and facility accountable to abolishing DEI offices/practices.

However, does Harvard really want all the information about their endowments, lack of intellectual diversity and due process, separate racial graduations, safe spaces and use of student loans made public?

I doubt so, argues Victor Davis Hanson on today’s edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words:”

“If I were the presidents of these major universities, I would do this: I would make a deal with the Trump administration. And I would welcome it because then I would tell my radical students, "You can't wear a mask. I'd like you to, but the federal government won't let me." Or, "We can't have racially segregated dorms anymore, theme houses. I'd like to, but it's against the law." And that would be their way out. Is that going to happen?

“I don't think so.”

What was billed as Joe Biden’s first post-presidential speech, turned out to be a disaster. However, the mainstream media, most namely the Wallstreet Journal, is still running cover for him, argues Victor Davis Hanson on today’s edition of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words:”

“But my point is this the Wall Street Journal headline was that he attacks Trump, accuses him of cutting Social Security. And the article said that [Biden] looked ‘rested.’

“That was just a complete distortion. And when you start looking every single day, as I'm doing, if it's tariffs, it's a disaster. If it's DOGE, it's a disaster. If it's Ukraine, Trump is doing something wrong, he's favored Putin too much. It's a disaster.

“Everything. If it's the mistakenly deported Mr. Garcia, there's no background about who Mr. Garcia really is. It's a disaster. Almost every article it's like an itch or a twitch—is negative, negative, negative, negative.”
