336: Pay Attention to the Small Things

    https://mindset.jeffheggie.com/

I have been watching Katie Ledecky all week as everything built up to her premier event, which is finally an Olympic event for the women, the 1500-meter freestyle.

This is a long race of endurance and stamina. Ledecky was by far the favorite to win the gold in this event.

Ledecky broke the World Record in this event in June 2014. Since then, she has broken her own World Record four more times!

On Tuesday, as expected, she took a commanding lead and maintained it throughout the entire 1500m. She swam strong and nobody was surprised that she won the Gold Medal in this event. Ledecky was ecstatic that her teammate, Erica Sullivan, won silver.

What I find interesting is that her dominant performance was only a little over 4-seconds faster than second place. Ledecky finished in 15:37.34, while Sullivanfinished in 15:41.41. As she powered through the water for over 15 minutes, one small mistake could have changed everything.

What is it that we can learn from this?

Earlier in the week I listened to an interview with Ledecky where she said, “you can look at all the stats, but when I have confidence that’s all that matters.” When she was asked what was different since the last Olympics she said, “I’m five years older and have five years more experience.”

Michael Phelps said, “she wears the crown and target. She has to do what she knows what to do.”

If you want to be the best at anything that you do, pay attention to the small things!

Ledecky has trained hard for years and years. To get to the level she is at she has had to focus on every area of her life from the physical training, mental training, nutrition, and so much more.

But when the difference between the best in the world and second place is only four seconds over a 1500m swim, the small things make a difference.

You may not be an Olympic athlete, but it’s no different for you. The small, seemingly insignificant success habits that you do day in, day out can be what really separates you from your competition.

These are the things that are easy to do, but they are also easy not to do.

Write out your goals every day. Easy to do, easy not to do.

Go through your Mindset Questions every day. Easy to do, easy not to do.

Look in the mirror. Are you doing the things every day that are getting you closer to your bigger goals? Or did you write out your goals every morning for a week but quit because nothing had happened yet?

  • 335: What Happened to Simone Biles?

I have loved watching the Tokyo Olympic Games.

As much as I love to watch the athletes compete, I love watching their interviews, their preparation, and interaction with other athletes.

One thing that has stood out to me this year is the level of confidence that some of these athletes have.

One that I watched closely was American Swimmer, Lilly King. In her interview she talked about her high level of confidence and things she did to intimidate opponents. She has been very successful in her career and was the favorite to win the Gold again this year in the 100m breaststroke.

It was a shock to see her place third as her 17-year-old teammate from Anchorage AK took the gold.

As we watch these young athletes compete on the world stage, I’ve often wondered how they deal with the stress and anxiety.

On the podium for the women’s skateboarding stood three teenagers – 13, 13 and 16. It amazes me.

Simon Biles is another one that I have been watching. She’s in a league of her own. She is amazing and she knows it.

I recently posted a quote from her. She said, “I’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I’m the first Simone Biles.”

I’ve been anxious to watch her at these Olympic Games.

On Tuesday she shocked the Olympic world when she pulled out of the U.S. team gymnastic finals. She said the emotional toll of the Tokyo Games, not physical injury, prompted her withdrawal.

I really like Tim Grover’s work and knew that he would post something about Simone. This is what he said on Instagram:

Winning sets unreasonable goals and requires you to bear the burden of responsibility for achieving them. That means doing anything and everything possible to get out of the situation you’re in, and into position to win.

You can pay the price of Winning and succeed, or you can quit, stay where you are, and pay the price of regret.

The road to paradise is a two-way street, and just as quickly as you travel to the top, you can slide right back down. In fact, you can pretty much count on it.

Winning doesn’t let you hang around. It meets you at the parade, cheers the loudest when you get the trophy, and then escorts you out to the parking lot, where the bus that brought you has a new sign with its next destination: Hell.

Winning will use every dirty trick in the book – and make up new ones just to entertain itself – to keep you in Hell.

It’s up to you to find your way out.

    Amberley Snyder

WALK RIDE RODEO - Watch it on Netflix

    http://www.amberleysnyder.org

On January 10th, 2010 Amberley was on her way to the Denver Stock Show and Rodeo. As she was passing through Sinclair, WY she took a look down at her map. After only seconds she looked up and realized she had faded into the other lane, headed towards a metal beam. In an effort to get back in her lane, Amberley overcorrected. Her truck slid off the road and rolled and she was ejected from the vehicle. She was slammed into a fence post that broke her back and immediately she lost feeling in her legs.

After five hours of emergency surgery the doctor’s prognosis was she would never regain use or feeling below her waist. He told her if she had worn her seatbelt, she would still have use of her legs. The one mistake she made that day changed her life forever, but it has not defeated her competitive spirit. The top priority for Amberley was not even to walk, but to ride her horses again. Remarkably after only 4 months after the accident, she was back on her horse.

Through all the challenges and adversity Amberley has had to face, it hasn’t stopped her from achieving any of her goals. In May of 2015 Amberley graduated college with a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education. In 2018, she earned her Master’s Degree in School Counseling from Utah State University.  Amberley’s hard work ethic hasn’t wavered, and one could argue has even gotten stronger. After the accident Amberley realized she had a unique opportunity to reach out and inspire people with her unconventional situation. Her first step to that was her “Wheel Chair Wednesday’s video segments on social media. She would perform everyday tasks that have now become more challenging, but not impossible, after her accident. These range from how she gets on her horse to how she fills her truck up with fuel and her short videos have become a popular fan favorite on social media resulting in nearly 200K fans on Facebook.

Amberley now is inspiring thousands across America by telling her inspirational story and competing in rodeos across the western United States. She has let the challenges she faces refine her, not define her.

She was voted the fan exemption contestant at the world’s richest one day rodeo, comparable to the Super Bowl, RFD-TV’s The American. She competed with the best in the industry and received a standing ovation from over 40,000 fans in AT&T Stadium and won over the hearts of America. Amberley has turned her tragedy into triumph and is inspiring all of America to Get Back on the Horse.

I was recently on a panel talking to a group of youth about entrepreneurship.

I had one young man ask me if I could tell him two things that would make him successful.

I told him he would find more success in any area of his life if he would do these two things.

    1. Step Out of Your Comfort Zone Every Day

We often know the things that we need to do in order to be successful, but we don't want to do them. We don't want to be uncomfortable. In my Mindset Questions that I ask myself every day, one of the questions that I ask is, "What are you going to do today to step out of your comfort zone?"

Get my Mindset Questions for FREE at www.JeffHeggie.com/Mindset

Every time you step out of your comfort zone, you expand the size of your comfort zone

    3. Take Action

A big part of my Momentum Series (www.JeffHeggie.com/Momentum) is setting goals and figuring out your purpose, or your why, behind each goal. But it doesn't matter if you know your goals and have a clear path to achieve them if you never take action. Nothing happens until you take action.

Sherry Winn – Unleash the WINNER Within You

Listen to my interview with Sherry on The Jeff & Heidi Show HERE

“In 1999, seven million girls in the US were playing soccer. The chance of making this US Olympic soccer team was 0.00031%. Sam and Kristie Mewis both did it.” – Rachel Bachman

According to the Georgia Career Information Center, 98 out of 100 high school athletes never play athletics at any collegiate level, and less than 1% receive a scholarship to a Division 1 University.

Only about 3% of all male and female high school basketball players play collegiate basketball at any level, and of those players, less than 1% have the opportunity to play professionally.

Beyond athletics, if you want to rise to the top in anything you are doing, there’s a great lesson to be learned here.

Sherry Winn was one of the few collegiate athletes to become an Olympian.

    How did she do it?

She said, “I had to aim to be not just one of the best, but THE BEST.”

She trained twice a day for 12 years

She drove to school at 6:45am to practice before school got started.

In the afternoon she trained with her team and then for an additional hour on her own.

On the weekend she practiced alone for hours

When she was selected for the USA Team Handball National Team, she trained twice a day, all year round

She said, “I took the action most people were not willing to take.”

“If you want to be a WINNER, you have to think big. You have to believe you can separate yourself from the 97% of people who try to make it big, not just 97% of all people, but the 97% who are willing to try.”

To be one of the elite, to be in the top 3%, you act, think, and aim differently.

You have to be willing to separate yourself every single day from those who want to be in the top 3%.

“Most people want something better. But as soon as they learn what it takes to be in the top 3%, they stop trying. You must be willing to believe that you are one of the elite and then take the action to get you there.”
