Those who are most successful are the ones who are willing to commit 100% to their goals.

When you’re fully committed you gain clarity on what you’re doing and why you’re doing it.

When you’re partially committed, you’re not confident and you hesitate.

Once you’re 100% committed to something, there are no exceptions, no matter what the circumstances.

You’ve probably heard the story of the army that landed their ships on the shores of their enemies land. Once they were on land, the commander ordered that the ships be burned. While the ships were up in flames, the commander told his men that they were headed into battle and they would either win or perish. There was no other choice.

Their choice was simple, win or die. They were 100% committed to their goal.

How different would it be if you created those kinds of stakes for yourself and achieving your goals?

If you truly want to be successful, you need to be committed 100%

Commit yourself by making an investment in yourself, burn your ships.

I’ve worked with clients that had goals for a number of years which they were not making progress on until they made the financial investment in themselves and hired a coach. Once they had made the financial commitment and had someone holding them accountable, they were able to accomplish the goals that they had previously only been wishing for.

In his book, Willpower Doesn’t Work, Benjamin Hardy says:

“Knowing that high investment will produce enormous inner commitment, you can produce your own point of no return. And that’s exactly what the highest achievers in the world do.

    They aren’t dreamers.

    They’re doers.

Because they have skin in the game.

When someone invests in themselves or their dreams, their commitment becomes solidified.”

Make the decision right now to commit to your goals 100%.

    Make the investment in yourself.

    Do whatever it takes.

In The Confident Athlete Program group coaching call last night, we talked about the relationship between body language and confidence.

Our body language plays a significant role in projecting how we feel about ourselves.

In all areas of our lives, we can tell a lot about a person’s self-confidence by their body language.

Compare someone speaking to a large audience that is confident versus someone that is terrified of public speaking.

When you’re watching a basketball game, a player’s body language says a lot about their confidence as they walk up to the free-throw line for a critical shot.

One way in which we can increase our confidence is to act the way we want to feel. If you want to be confident, act confident.

Just like with self-talk, the first step with taking control of our body language is to become aware of it. When we are aware of the body language we are using, we can do something to change it.

There are a few exercises you can do with body language to help improve your confidence level.

First, focus on your posture. The way someone holds themselves gives a clear picture of their confidence level. Focusing on good posture will not only make you look more confident, but it will also make you feel more confident.

Secondly, pay attention to the pace you move at. When you imagine a confident person, how do they walk? Do they walk slow and tired, or do they move with energy as if they have a purpose? Confident people move quicker (with good posture). As you go throughout your day, pay attention to how you walk and put the effort into walking with confidence.

As you walk and move with more confidence you will gain more confidence overall. Practice walking the walk daily until it becomes habit.

I strongly believe in setting your goals high and visualizing in vivid details how you’re going to accomplish your goals. But it’s also important to think through all the possible situations you could face. What could go wrong. What could throw you off track. And most importantly, how will you respond when that happens.

313: Make the Change to Become the Person You Want to Be

    https://jeffheggie.com/confidentathlete

Yesterday I talked about how your environment will dictate your success or failure. There’s no question that we are all shaped by our environment. This includes the people we spend time with, the events we are involved in, the books we read, what we listen to, and more.

It’s important to understand that we all have the power and ability to create our own environment this is ultimately going to influence who we become.

We can all have a significant influence on what we ultimately accomplish if we demand it from ourselves and create the environment to make it happen.

You take actions based on your thoughts and ideas. All your thoughts and ideas come from your different experiences and what you’ve been exposed to. Therefore, your environment impacts all your actions.

Dr. Benjamin Hardy said, “Most people are living small, not because they lack the inherent talent, but because their situation isn’t demanding more of them. They haven’t placed themselves in a position requiring them to become more than they currently are.”

Sometimes, they’re not putting enough demand on themselves and other times it’s the fear of changing their environment. This is especially true when the change of environment that is needed, is to stop spending time with specific people.  People who are not fully committed to their goals may recognize their toxic relationship but not be willing to change it.

When you have a strong enough purpose (your ‘why’), and you’re fully committed to your goals, anything is possible. This is the point where you purposefully change your environment. This may mean ending a relationship or starting new ones. It means putting yourself in situations and circumstances that will be beneficial to your success.

You are responsible for creating your environment that will bring you success. “Your choice of environment and external influences will directly reflect in the person you become.”

I worked with a student athlete that had a lot of talent and as a sophomore was a major contributor to his football team’s success. He recognized that if he put in the work, he would possibly have an opportunity to get a scholarship to help pay for his college education.

I explained to him some of the challenges that I could see for him. His group of friends were not football players and were known to make poor decisions that often got them into trouble. Rather than putting in extra training he would choose to spend time with this friend group.

312: Your Environment Will Dictate Your Success or Failure

    https://jeffheggie.com/confidentathlete

    https://jeffheggie.com/2021/06/21/your-environment-will-dictate-your-success-or-failure/

People who fail at achieving their goals often use a lack of willpower as an excuse.

The problem here is that if it comes down to willpower determining your success or failure, there’s a lot more to the story.

If you’re depending on willpower, there are a few factors to consider:

    - You don’t truly know what you want in life.

    - Your purpose, your ‘why’, for your goals isn’t strong enough.

    - You haven’t committed to your goal.

    - Your environment doesn’t support your goal.

Begin by creating clearly identified, written out goals and figure out your ‘why’ for each goal! (You can do this at: www.JeffHeggie.com/momentum)

    - Commit to your success

    - Set a timeline (reverse engineer your goals so you know what you have to accomplish monthly, weekly, daily…)

    - Get a coach or mentor to hold you accountable.

    - Put yourself in an environment to succeed. Remove anything from your environment that won’t help you to reach your goals.

You are who you are because of your environment. If you want to change, then change your environment.

Put yourself in an environment that will give you all the opportunities that you need to succeed.

Dr. Benjamin Hardy says, “You design your worldview by proactively shaping your external inputs, such as the information you consume, the people you surround yourself with, the places you go, and the experiences you have…

Your life is the product of your thoughts and choices, as many self-help books explain. But where do those thoughts and choices come from? They don’t self-generate out of nowhere. You shape the garden of your mind by planting specific things from your environment, such as the books you read, experiences you have, and people you surround yourself with.”

If you really want to be successful in achieving your goals, put yourself in an environment that will make your success inevitable.

    311: Create Your Future Self

    https://jeffheggie.com/confidentathlete

    https://jeffheggie.com/2021/06/18/create-your-future-self/

    Who is your future self?

    Do you know that person?

In both my High Achievers Mindset Secrets program and The Confident Athlete Program I have an exercise that you go through after we’ve established your clearly defined goals. The exercise is to create your Vivid Vision.

What I ask you to do is to look at the goals that you’ve created and in as much detail as possible, describe your life 5, 10, or even 15 years from now. I want you to be able to vividly see your future self and the life you are living.

When you have a clear view of your future self, it has a direct impact on how you feel right now. It will give you a boost of optimism and excitement for what’s to come. It helps to give purpose and meaning to your life now and motivates you to achieve the goals that you’ve set for yourself.

In both of my courses we spend a lot of time focused on the growth mindset versus the fixed mindset. I show you the advantages of having a growth mindset and how to transition there from a fixed mindset. Psychologist, Carol Dweck, says that people who have a growth mindset clear on their future and are more defined by their future self than their current self. But those with a fixed mindset believe who they are now is permanent and that is who they will always be.

Dr. Benjamin Hardy has a great book on this topic called, “Personality Isn’t Permanent.” I wrote about this book in “Who You Become Is a Choice.”

Look at who you were in the past. You’ve come a long way. What were your goals 5 years ago? How many of those goals are you living today? Reflect on your past and appreciate where you are today. What would you tell yourself if you could go back and talk to that person 5 years ago?

You’re going to continue to progress and achieve your goals. You will be a much different person in 5 years from now. What would your future self say to you right now?

You must have clearly defined, written down goals.

You must have a path to take to achieve your goals.

You must have the confidence in yourself that you will achieve those goals.

This is a big part of all my courses, because without these things in place… Where are you going?

Once you have your clearly defined goals, take the time to write your Vivid Vision for each one. Go into as much detail as you possibly can. Feel what it’s like to be there. Feel what it’s like to be your future self.

Once you’ve created this vivid vision of your best future self, believe that this is who you are going to become. Identify with your future self and start to behave and live as that person. Make decisions as your future self. Become that person now.

    Be… then do… then have…

310: When You’ve Put in The Work, You Can’t Help but Be Confident

    https://jeffheggie.com/confidentathlete

    https://jeffheggie.com/2021/06/17/focused-and-intentional-practice/

I was recently having a conversation with one of the athletes in The Confident Athlete Program about the importance of intentional practice.

To reach your full potential as an athlete, an entrepreneur, or anything else you’re trying to succeed at, intentional practice is a very important factor in achieving your goals.

I have seen it with clients, and I’ve especially seen it as a basketball coach. I’ve watched many practices in which players show up at the last minute and spend the next two hours just going through the motions. They are there because they have to be. They’re not there with the focused intention of becoming better. They’re not there because they are working towards their goal.

Whether you’re an athlete wanting to excel at your sport, or an entrepreneur building your business, what do you put into your practice and preparation?

Do you put everything into it that you can?

Are you focused and intentional in your practices?

Are you just going through the motions, or are you really engaged and focused on improving, working towards your goal?

The more engaged and focused you are, the better your chance of improving and being prepared for game time.

What are you doing to set yourself apart? Are you doing more than required?

As an entrepreneur, are you studying your numbers? Do you know the market and your competitors? Are you working on your own personal development? Are you analyzing and tracking what is and what isn’t working in your business?

As an athlete, are you putting in the extra work? Are you focused and intentional in your extra work? Are you studying film? Are you weight training? Are you a student of your game?

These are the things that not only improve your skills and abilities, but they will also improve your confidence.

World Champion Calf Roper, Tyson Durfey, told me that he developed his confidence through practice. He put in more work than anyone he was competing against. He said, “I felt like I actually deserved it more than my competitors.”

When you’ve put in the work. When you’ve practiced with focus and intention. When you’re a student of your sport or business, you can’t help but be confident.

Don’t just go through the motions because you have to. Make your practices count. You should be working to get better every single day. If your goals are really important to you and you really want to achieve them, get to work and make your effort count.
