  • Allow Your Higher Self to Guide You

The sixth principle is the spiritual mind. All that we consider good, noble, and great in the human mind emanates from this part and is gradually unfolded into our consciousness. Nobility, true religious feeling, kindness, humanity, justice, unselfish love, mercy, sympathy, etc. It is that “something within," which guides us to higher and nobler thoughts, desires, and actions.

The spiritual mind is the source of the 'inspiration’ which poets, painters, sculptors, writers, preachers, philosophers, musicians and creators have received across time. The voice of their higher self. The voice that comes from within. The one that has guided many to embrace high ideals in their work.

Learn to follow your spiritual mind and allow it to be your guide.

  • Listen to Your Nobler Thoughts

You have probably seen this representation countless times. It’s found in numerous cartoons. The old story of each person having two advisors, one at each ear, one whispering to them to follow nobler thoughts and the other tempting them to pursue the lower desires.

The Intellect represents your "I" consciousness. The part of your mind that reasons. On one side, this "I" has your instinctive mind sending desires of your former self, tempting you to follow the impulses of a less developed life, which are unworthy of the growing person you are becoming.

On the other side is your spiritual mind, sending its higher thoughts and impulses into your Intellect, and trying to help you in your unfoldment and development. This next principle will help you master and control your lower nature.

  • Keep Your Gaze Upward and Move Forward

The Intellect is the fifth yogi principle. It is the conscious part of the mind, the part I am using to write this text right now. It allows me to reason, think, and analyze. This part plays a central role in my ability to form a conception of the self, of the "I," and helps me make sense of the world around me.

And this awakening of the intellect does not necessarily make us better human beings, in the sense of being "good." On one hand, an unfolding capacity to reason will guide us to higher thoughts. But on the other hand, some people are so attached to the material side of things that the awakened intellect gives them increased powers to gratify their low desires and inclinations.

Let your higher nature be on guard and refuse to be drawn back into the animal instincts that have been passed through. Keep your gaze upward and forward. There will be setbacks, but such obstacles are soon overcome, and you'll continue the journey. The instinctive mind will pull your intellect down, but the spiritual mind will guide it up. There is no going backward on your path, only progress. As slow as it may seem, each of us is moving steadily forward.

  • Do You Know That You Know?

Simple consciousness is an awareness of outside things, like Zoe. Self-consciousness is an awareness of oneself, like me. Like you.

It is easy to comprehend, but difficult to define. Basically, without self-consciousness a creature may know; but with self-consciousness it is possible for you to know that you know.

  • You Must Control Your Lower Instincts

The lowest of the mental principles is the instinctive mind. This is the lower part of the subconscious mind.

Knowledge is power; we must learn to recognize the instinctive nature within us and tame our wild beasts. Our higher principles will always obtain the mastery. We just need patience, perseverance and faith.

  • Your Mind Is Divided in Three

We have all heard the terms conscious and subconscious. The theory is that our mind is divided in two different parts. The one that thinks consciously, the one that reasons. And the one that does things automatically, subconsciously.

If you are familiar with these modern theories of consciousness, you’ll be able to understand the three mental principles. Just remember this:

The conscious mind corresponds with the Intellect principle in the Yogi philosophy.

The lowest part of the subconscious mind is what the Yogis call the Instinctive Mind.

The higher part of the subconscious mind is what the Yogis call the Spiritual Mind.

  • The Energy behind All Things

Prana, in Sanskrit, means absolute energy. It is the active principle of life. The Chinese call it chi, the Japanese call it ki, and the Stoics call it pneuma. Prana is universal energy, a vital force present in all forms of life, from the most elementary form of plant life to the highest form of animal life. It is all-pervading and a universal principle, representing the essence of all motion, force, or energy in the universe. It encompasses gravity, electricity, the movement of the planets, and all forms of life.

The body uses oxygen in the blood to replenish and rebuild itself. The nervous system uses prana when we think, act, reason, and move. Consequently, constant replenishing is necessary. Every thought, every action, every effort of the will,  every muscle movement, and every spoken word uses a certain amount of prana.

Think of prana as the vitality you feel, the energy or force that animates you and every other form of matter.

  • A Shell of a Finer Kind of Matter

Water, in its various states, serves as an analogy for understanding the astral body and its relationship to the physical body. Just as water exists as ice, water, and steam at different temperatures, the physical body has a counterpart known as the astral body, the second principle of us, humans.

And what is the purpose of this astral body? It is a shell and nothing more. Composed of a finer quality of matter than that of the physical body, but matter nonetheless. Both bodies are eventually discarded at the appropriate time, disintegrating after someone dies.

  • The Vehicle We Use to Navigate Life

Of all the seven principles of man, the physical body is, of course, the most apparent. The one we can perceive with our senses. The one that is tangible. It is the lowest in the scale, and is the crudest manifestation of a human.

According to the Yogi philosophy, the body is essential for our growth in the present stage of our development. Although we are not our bodies and despite it being the lowest of the principles that make us, it should not be neglected.

Instead, we should treat our bodies as temples of our spirits and take care of them to make them the best possible instruments. Just as we would maintain and care for the house we live in.

  • What Are We as Humans?

What are you? What are we humans? Are we only our bodies or minds, or is there more to our being?

We usually think of ourselves as composed of our bodies and our minds. The Yogi science teaches that us humans are far more complete. That we not only have a body and a soul, but we are a spirit possessing a soul, and this soul has several vehicles or tools for expression.

The best way to think of yourself is to realize that the spirit is the real self, and that the lower principles are just surrounding layers. These numerous layers prevent your Spirit’s full expression.

As you advance in development, your consciousness passes from the lower planes to the higher, and you become more and more aware of your higher nature.
