#1 – From WV GOVERNOR –  Gov. Jim Justice has announced the continuation of his successful Nursing Workforce Expansion Program through $20 million that was approved in this year’s state budget. 

With the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbating West Virginia’s nursing shortage, the governor launched a $48 million Nursing Workforce Expansion Program in December 2021 through a multi-pronged approach to support, recruit, and train nurses. This included $26 million to further develop nursing education programs, through which West Virginia welcomed 810 new nursing students during the first year of the program.

“This represents another historic investment in our state’s nurses, who are the heart and soul of our healthcare system, and I am thrilled that these funds will further strengthen nursing programs all across West Virginia,” Justice said.

#3 – From WV SBDC – Tyler McElroy is the owner of Classic Kickz, a sneaker shop on High Street in Morgantown. The store carries a variety of limited edition shoes and most sought after apparel from some of the top brands. 

McElroy said after college he wanted to pursue his dreams of owning his own business selling shoes and clothes. He sought the assistance of the West Virginia Small Business Development Center in getting set up.

WV SBDC Business Coach Frank Goldsborough Jr. was able to help McElroy with repairs to the storefront by helping him secure a ARPA grant from the City of Morgantown. After that the two became more acquainted, Frank assisted Tyler with his book keeping and finances. 

“He’s been a lifesaver to us,” McElroy said. “After our first meeting I mentioned other issues we were having like taxes, running the business better, keeping up with the books and money coming in and out. Frank told me about his background in accounting and we hit it off.”

As road work ramps up for the spring and summer, officials urge caution in work zones…Coming soon to Coopers Rock State Forest: stargazing cabins!...and Tourism boosts the state’s economic development--#YesWV…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From METRO NEWS – Road crews have begun mill and fill work to I-64 between Dunbar and Charleston. Work zone crews will first repair areas of the interstate from the Dunbar interchange to the Oakwood Road interchange in Charleston before the repaving starts. 

The manager of the project, Ryan Canfield, said they will cover 5.05 miles and will incorporate about 30 lane miles worth of new asphalt, calling it a much needed upgrade.

The work will take place overnight during hours of less interstate travel. Even so, Canfield urged motorists to be vigilant while driving through work zones.

“Stay off your devices and pay attention to nighttime closures,” Canfield said. “Pay attention to the reduced speed limit going through that site.”

#2 – From WV NEWS – West Virginia’s first stargazing cabins are coming to Coopers Rock State Forest, a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

Gov. Jim Justice has announced a $10 million investment into the state-run facility over the next few years.

The A frame cabins “will be spectacular beyond belief” with “unbelievable” views, Justice said. Five cabins will be built at first, with another 15 planned.

The cabins will sit on the ridge overlooking the canyon down by Raven Rock, according to Secretary of Tourism Chelsea Ruby. 

“They will have a spectacular view. They’re perfectly positioned with skylights and telescopes inside to be one of the greatest places you can see stars on the East Coast,” she said. 

State officials said there is a demand for more lodging at state parks. Over the past few years, the parks have pulled in $150 million, which then gets reinvested back into them. Comparing the first quarter of 2023 to the first quarter of 2019, a record year, online reservations are up more than 200%.

#3 – From WV NEWS – In the years since 2017, what is now called the West Virginia Department of Tourism has grown from a humble marketing office to become one of the most important components of state government.

The department, which was elevated to a Cabinet-level agency in 2021, works in concert with the West Virginia Department of Economic Development to help existing businesses in the state grow and expand, as well as attracting new prospects.

“In fact, over the last two years, our department has added and grown a new division called Destination Development,” Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby said. “That group does just that — they work on how we can grow destinations around the state.”

The Department of Tourism has also been one of the partners supporting the Ascend West Virginia program, which aims to attract remote workers to move to the state.

Workers who are accepted into the Ascend WV program receive a one-time incentive package valued at more than $20,000, including $12,000 in direct cash payments and a year’s worth of outdoor recreational opportunities.

A Triadelphia manufacturer converts coal for use in space--#YesWV…Discover a trove of antiques and glassware in Weston and Buckhannon…and learn how to craft a standout brand identity…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From SCRIPPS NEWS – Nestled among the hills and mountains of Triadelphia, in the heart of coal country, they are reaching for the stars – literally.

“The two products we make both have opportunities to go to space,”  said Rudy Olson, director of Consol Innovations, makers of CFOAM, a type of carbon foam used in the aerospace industry.

The material is prized for how it interacts with heat. It won't break, which is one of the reasons it's part of the building blocks of space exploration.

It's a far cry from the historic use of coal as fuel, which is getting phased out from power plants in many parts of the country. It's not just coal that's used here, but also coal waste.

"Most definitely, we can use coal waste to make valuable carbon products," Olson said.

Completion of a stream restoration project means more fishing opportunities at Kanawha State Forest…WVDOH crews have been busy clearing enough tree canopy to stretch from Charleston to Myrtle Beach …WV native Homer Hickam hopes more Coalwood stories are coming to the screen…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From WV EXPLORER – A stream restoration project designed to improve fishing and recreation at Kanawha State Forest has been completed.

Started in 2020, the project was a significant undertaking and included the removal of the Davis Creek Dam, which was built in the 1930s.

Structures were added to stabilize stream banks and provide additional aquatic habitat and fishing opportunities. By removing a pond, the length of fishable water has been increased from about 1,000 feet to more than one mile. These changes create pool habitat and will allow the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources to begin stocking trout.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection's In-Lieu Fee Program funded the restoration efforts at an estimated cost of $1 million.

"This project is one more example of the work we’re doing to restore streams to their natural state while also providing additional opportunities for anglers to enjoy. We're thrilled to see this type of investment in our natural resources and are proud to partner with the WVDEP and Kanawha State Forest to make it happen,” WVDNR Director Brett McMillion said.

#2 – From WVDOT – West Virginia Division of Highways maintenance crews cleared more than 430 miles of trees and branches away from the state’s roadways between November 2022 and the end of March 2023, enough to stretch from Charleston to Myrtle Beach.

"I can't tell you how proud I am of the crews,” said Transportation Secretary Jimmy Wriston, P.E.  “I gave them a challenge. They believed they could do it. I believed they could do it. They did it!"  

Canopy clearing plays a vital part in prolonging the life of the pavement on West Virginia’s 36,000 miles of road. Along with keeping ditches cleared and proper drainage, keeping roads cleared of overhanging canopy is important both to the life of the road and to the safety of drivers.

Like cutting grass in the summer, milling and filling potholes or clearing ice and snow, canopy clearing is part of the WVDOH core maintenance program. Combined, core maintenance procedures prolong the life of pavement and keep roads safer.

#3 – From THE CHARLESTON GAZETTE-MAIL –  While he has long been a name familiar to West Virginians, it’s not an overstatement to say Homer Hickam has inspired people all over the world.

On the surface, his 1998 memoir, “Rocket Boys,” tells the story of his life growing up in the coal company town of Coalwood in McDowell County. But the story is about more than boys building rockets. At its core, it’s about family, changing times, and doggedly pursuing a dream against all odds.

The book became a New York Times bestseller and was adapted into the critically acclaimed 1999 film “October Sky.”

Hickam is the author of several novels including “The Coalwood Way” and “Sky of Stone,”about life in Coalwood, and “Carrying Albert Home,” about a fantastical road trip with a special pet. 

The author, who turned 80 in February, has been busy writing screenplays with the idea of creating a series set in Coalwood, focused more on people like his parents and the coal miners. 

“Sometimes you can plan those adventures. Sometimes the adventures just come in over the transom. They land in your lap. There it is. You want it? Grab it.”

West Virginia’s history of glass making is captured at a Weston museum…Some great Mountain Stage shows are coming up, and tickets are selling fast--get yours today!...and, from ramps to chocolate, these festivals celebrate spring in Almost Heaven…on today’s daily304. 

#1 – From WV EXPLORER – Did you know that West Virginia was once among the world's chief exporters of glass? It supported more than 400 factories through the 20th century. 

Many factories were located along what's now the I-79 corridor in the Monongahela Valley of the northern state. Those include pressed glass companies Hazel-Atlas and Anchor Hocking in Clarksburg, while Morgantown was home to Seneca Glass Company and the Morgantown Glass Company. In Weston and surrounding areas, blown stemware was the primary product.

Other parts of the state specialized in different styles of glassmaking as well. Kanawha Glass, in Dunbar, and Rainbow Glass, in Huntington, produced blown glass in bright colors, typifying the mid-century era of the 1960s and '70s.

Only a handful of West Virginia glass manufacturers are still operating today, including Blenko Glass, in Milton, and Davis-Lynch Glass, in Morgantown, one of the few places with artists on staff still hand-painting glassware.

But you can still view examples and learn what led to the state’s glass boom and bust at the Museum of Glass in West Virginia, located in Weston

“I encourage people to look for their local studio artists and support them,” he says. “That’s an important thing to do because that’s the future of the glass industry as far as the United States is concerned,” museum archivist Tom Felt said.

WV SBDC helps a Charleston distillery off to a good start --Cheers! …1010 Bridge Chef Paul Smith is the first West Virginian to make it to the finals for the coveted James Beard Award…and the WVDNR congratulates 2023 winners of Archery in the Schools…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From WV SBDC  – Producing vodka, barrel-rested gin, bourbon, brandy, and West Virginia moonshine, Bullock Distillery puts its name on quality as well as taste. The Charleston-based small business sources its limestone water from Greenbrier County offering a unique product with Mountain State appeal.

“It’s cool, clean, has all the things distillers like, and it’s just a focus on bringing that taste of West Virginia to your glass,” Tighe Bullock, chief owner and operator, said. 

“They’re a great family,” Doug Spaulding, regional coordinator with the West Virginia Small Business Development Center, said. “They are innovative, they think out of the box, and they have a vision for the community and it’s been a very good fit for us all.” 

The WVSBDC helped Bullock Distillery acquire some financing as well as acted as a sounding board for their ideas. Most recently, the WVSBDC was able to assist them with getting their accounting systems up and running efficiently and an updated and vibrant website.

#2 – From WCHS-TV – College football has the Heisman Trophy, actors have the Oscars and chefs have the James Beard Foundation Awards, one of the highest honors they can receive.

West Virginia chef Paul Smith is making history by becoming a finalist for the 2023 James Beard Awards.

Grab a seat at 1010 Bridge in Charleston and you might get the chance to meet Smith, who grew up in West Virginia with a large Italian family and always found himself in the kitchen.

From those early lessons, he has blossomed into a top chef and is receiving accolades for his culinary excellence from the James Beard Foundation. Smith said he was washing dishes early Wednesday morning when he was announced a finalist in the competition for the Best Chef in the Southeast. 

“I can't even tell you how much of an honor this is, and I never would've thought that I would be sitting here talking to you about this, not only being nominated but being the first West Virginian to ever make it to the finals,” Smith said.

#3 – From WVDNR – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has announced results from the 18th WVDNR Archery in the Schools State Tournament.

The top high school teams were Shady Spring, Winfield and Hurricane. The top middle school teams were Ripley, Peterstown Middle and Elkview. And the top elementary school teams were Elk, Bridge/Clendenin and Maysville. The top 10 male and top 10 female archers in the high school, middle school and elementary divisions also were recognized during a ceremony.

More than 750 students from nearly 70 schools from around the state participated in the tournament at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. Nearly 3,000 people attended the event.

“We set a goal this year to give the kids and coaches who work so hard all year the largest tournament we have ever put on and I think we did that,” said Chris Scraggs, who coordinates the Archery in the Schools program for the WVDNR. “As always, we want to thank everyone who participated in the program this year and extend a big congratulations to all our teams and students that placed in the state tournament.”
