The Buffalo Mining Company in Logan County dealt with coal waste as other mines did, by dumping it into a nearby stream.  Over the years, it developed dams to hold in that waste but their poor design was no match for heavy rain, and when the dams ruptured the water and waste created one of West Virginia’s most horrific human tragedies.

#1 – From THE INTELLIGENCER – The city of Wheeling went through a period of decades without seeing new construction projects in its downtown area, but now the ball has begun to roll on new builds, and the latest venture has got many in town buzzing — any way you slice it.

New  real estate listings have sprung up for available luxury condominiums in a downtown building that is set for construction this year. The listing for condos touts the space as being a part of the new city’s renaissance, which many movers and shakers in town argue is well underway with all of the multimillion dollar investments taking place at nearly every turn downtown.

The project is being launched by the DiCarlo family, namesake and operator of the original DiCarlos Famous Pizza chain. The name of the new facility at 1115 Main St. will be the DiCarlo Building, as stated in the real estate listing.

2 – From WCHS-TV -- The Charleston Dirty Birds will celebrate a Mountain State staple by playing as the Pepperoni Rolls for one night this summer.

The team will don the pepperoni roll-themed jerseys during a game on Saturday, July 15, according to a news release. The game will also feature pepperoni roll-inclusive entertainment throughout the night.

Prior to the game, the Dirty Birds will host a pepperoni roll festival and contest. A ticket to the game includes tickets to the contest where fans can vote for their favorite homemade pepperoni roll from local restaurants and participants, the news release said.

#3 – From THE INTER-MOUNTAIN – WorkForce West Virginia, in partnership with the WV Secretary of State’s Office, recently rolled out a significant update to the WV One Stop Business Portal, making it easier and more efficient for employers to access employer contribution filing information. Through the updated WorkForce West Virginia tab on the WV One Stop Business Portal, employers can more easily access key resources in one convenient location at business4.wv.gov.

The updated WorkForce WV feature in the WV One Stop Business Portal includes several improvements and enhancements, most notably a “My Linked WorkForce Accounts” feature, direct access to crucial online employer resources and information, and direct access to employer account functions such as managing employer account information, filing contribution/wage reports, and making delinquent payments. The improved tab also includes a message section where the agency can quickly and easily disseminate important notices or messages from the filing office.

“This is an excellent example of West Virginia agencies working together to improve processes and outcomes for employers across the Mountain State,” said James Bailey, Secretary of the WV Department of Commerce. “This partnership showcases how the innovative integration of resources benefits business owners and employers around the state.”

Did you know you can camp for free within the New River Gorge National Park?...a new airline at Yeager will offer budget flights to Orlando and “the other” Charleston…and an African-American arts academy hosts summer camp for teens…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From THE GAZETTE-MAIL –  “It’s a pretty place,” said first-time New River Gorge National Park and Preserve camper Sharon Simpson as she relaxed on a chair at her campsite in the park’s Glade Creek Campground.

“The only sounds you hear are from the river or a passing train,” Simpson said. “When I walked to the creek to take some pictures, a deer walked right past me.”

Unlike most campgrounds in other national parks, where campers are charged fees averaging about $20 per night, all eight campgrounds found within the New River National Park and Preserve are free and open year round.

They’re rated primitive--meaning they lack drinking water, bathhouses, or hookups for power and other utilities--but what they lack in amenities are more than made up for with the area’s natural beauty and proximity to recreation like fishing and hiking.

#2 – From GOVERNOR.WV.GOV –  Gov. Jim Justice has announced a partnership with the successful new low cost carrier Breeze Airways to connect West Virginia International Yeager Airport (CRW) with at least five cities over the next two years. 

New nonstop flights to Orlando, Florida (MCO) and Charleston, South Carolina (CHS) will begin May 31, 2023. The new routes are now on sale at introductory fares of $59 and $49, respectively, one way. At least three more destinations, including New York City, are slated to be added over the next 24 months. 

This innovative partnership between the state, Kanawha County, and the City of Charleston comes after years of decline in available destinations from smaller airports around the country, including West Virginia International Yeager Airport. The new flights will more than double air connectivity to West Virginia’s capital.

Breeze was launched in 2021 by JetBlue founder and former CEO David Neeleman with a mission to fill a key gap in America’s air-travel offerings: efficient, affordable, direct flights between secondary airports, bypassing hubs for shorter travel times. It was recently named one of the best domestic airlines in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure.

#3 – From BLACK BY GOD –  The Norman Jordan African American Arts & Heritage Academy is planning its 2023 Summer Youth Arts & Heritage Academy.  

NJAAAHA is an annual summer arts program that offers teenagers between the ages of 12-18 concentrated study in their chosen artistic discipline. The program provides classes in instrumental and vocal music, theater, dance, visual arts, creative writing (including hip-hop and basic songwriting), and arts technology. The workshops are supplemented with historical and cultural knowledge associated with the students' chosen art form, with guest performers, field trips and more. 

Norman Jordan of Ansted, WV was the president and chief financial officer of the NJAAA&HA until his passing in 2015. Jordan was one of the leading African-American poets of West Virginia and the Black Arts Movement.

2022 CVB numbers are in, indicating that tourism is booming in Logan County…Plan a spring getaway at a West Virginia state park…and motorcyclists, learn how to stay safe on the road…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From THE LOGAN BANNER –  The Hatfield and McCoy Convention and Visitors Bureau reported nearly $7,000 additional funding in their financials for 2022 compared to the previous year.

CVB Executive Director Debrina Williams said 40% of the organization’s working budget is based off the numbers presented in the report.

“You can take a look at those numbers and know that tourism is booming in Logan County,” Williams said during Monday’s meeting of the Logan County Commission.

According to the CVB’s annual report, the organization had $243,367.15 in total assets in 2022, compared to $236,761.23 in 2021. 

Commission President Diana Barnette, who also sits on the CVB Board, noted that the 2022 figure is a representation of how much hotel/motel tax the county is raking in, largely due to out-of-state riders on the Hatfield McCoy Trails.

#2 – From WOWK-TV – The Putnam County Development Authority recently held an open house for the WV FAME Program at Bridge Valley Community and Technical College. 

The West Virginia Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education (WV FAME) is an apprenticeship program intended to drive workforce development initiatives across West Virginia.

The program offers a two-year associates degree in advanced manufacturing technology. Enrolled students will alternate their days between attending school and working at Toyota in Buffalo or the proposed Nucor Steel in Apple Grove. The education is free AND the students earn a paycheck while they’re going to school.
