#1 – From WBOY-TV – More than 50 cadets will soon be starting their careers at jails and correctional facilities in West Virginia after graduating from the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s Basic Training program recently.

The cadets who graduated were part of Class 86 and received certificates from Commissioner William Marshall during the ceremony in Glenville.

According to Gov. Jim Justice’s office, the WVDCR has welcomed a total of 429 graduates into its ranks so far this year, nearly equaling the total amount in 2023, when 483 officers and staff graduated.

#2 – From WV NEWS – From 2017 to 2021, West Virginia attracted $6.2 billion in private sector investments, according to state Economic Development Secretary Mitch Carmichael.

In 2022 and 2023, the total rose to $10 billion, which includes planned projects promised to bring hundreds of new employment opportunities to the state.

Form Energy, which manufactures multi-day, iron-air renewable batteries, announced its plan to invest in West Virginia at the end of December 2022. Form Factory 1 is expected to create a minimum of 750 new full-time jobs and will represent a total investment of up to $760 million. 

In Mason County, Nucor continues to make substantive progress on its $3.1 billion sheet steel mill. The mill will employ as many as 2,000 workers during construction, and there will be up to 800 full-time employees when it becomes fully operational.

The company has purchased additional property in the Northern Panhandle where it plans to contract a “trans-loading facility,” Carmichael said, adding another 75 to 100 jobs.

#3 – From METRO NEWS –  Recreational trails are going to benefit from the announced sale of the 2,700-acre tract of land in the Blackwater Canyon from John Crites to the U.S. Forest Service.

The land will be added to the Monongahela National Forest adjacent to Blackwater State Park. State Division of Natural Resources Director of Technical Support & Services Travis Long said the purchase will help in the development of the Blackwater Loop Trail.

The trail will connect near Douglas Falls and then take users on the other side of the North Fork of the Blackwater River where it will connect with the Allegheny Trail. An old rail grade, the trail will feature historic coke ovens at Coketon and Douglas as well as scenery along the Blackwater River.

The completion of the loop trail is in conjunction with the completion of Corridor H in Tucker County. The DOH is wrapping up the environmental clearances for both the Parsons to Davis and Wardensville sections of the highway.

New campgrounds are coming to Lost River and Cass Scenic Railroad state parks…plan a biking adventure in one of West Virginia’s charming small towns…and Tu-Endie-Wei State Park is the newest location of an Instagrammable Almost Heaven swing…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From WV EXPLORER – Lost River State Park and Cass Scenic Railroad State Park are slated for nearly $13 million in expansions to be completed in 2025, according to West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice.

Cass’s new campground -- its first -- will border the Greenbrier River. The site will feature 100 campsites with water and 50-amp electrical service, two bathhouses, a check-in station, an RV dump station, and paved roads and utilities.

Lost River State Park will also see significant upgrades with the addition of 35 modern campsites, each featuring water and 50-amp electrical service. The new facilities will include one bathhouse, a check-in station, an RV dump station, and paved roads and utilities.

The campground projects are part of an ongoing investment in the West Virginia State Parks system. During the Justice Administration, more than $250 million in improvement projects have been completed.

#3 – From WOWK-TV – West Virginia’s newest Almost Heaven swing is situated at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park in Point Pleasant, where the Kanawha and Ohio rivers meet.

Tu-Endie-Wei, which is a Wyandotte word for “point between two waters,” commemorates the frontiersmen who fought and died at the Battle of Point Pleasant on October 10, 1774. 

The West Virginia Department of Tourism has installed dozens of the oversized wooden swings at scenic locations throughout the state. Visitors are encouraged to snap a photo of their party on the swing and share it to social media using #AlmostHeaven.

#2 – From WOWK-TV – Heritage Farm has announced it is building a year-round indoor/outdoor snow park. The Wayne County park will be the first of its kind in the nation.

The new facilities will include an indoor snow park as well as an outdoor ski and tubing hill.

The indoor park will feature snow play areas, ice skating, ice slides, snow tubing, snowboarding and skiing. The facility will also be able to produce real snow in up to 70 degree temperatures, all powered by solar panels and reusing the water of any melted snow.

The outdoor park features year-round skiing and tubing slopes, which will be maintained with snowmaking machines and “advanced synthetic technology.” 

Heritage Farm owner Audy Perry said the snow park is already under construction.

#3 – From WV EXPLORER – The producers of the West Virginia-made comedy film “Ambrosia!” have announced a September release that will be followed by a series of statewide and national screenings.

The 90-minute film was written and directed by Shane Pierce and David Gravely, who set out to develop a Hollywood-style screwball comedy.. It follows the misadventures of an innkeeper who struggles to manage a house full of eccentric guests and staff.

The production companies Butter Chicken Pictures and Mtn Craft have announced a public premiere on Sept. 27 in Beckley, where much of the film was shot. Following that, showings will be held at theaters across the state and region.

Afterward, the feature-length independent film will be released globally on streaming platforms.

#2 – From CBF.ORG – Up in the mountains where West Virginia’s Lost River begins, the water trickling though Wilding Woolly Farm is virtually pristine. Owners Hope and Bev Yankey are committed to keeping it that way so native brook trout might one day thrive downstream.

The conservation-minded couple turned to Trout Unlimited and its Potomac Headwaters Home Rivers Initiative for help. 

Brook trout’s sensitivity to water temperature and conditions make them an excellent indicator of stream health. That’s why the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement made restoring brook trout a goal of the federal-state effort to clean up the Bay and its tributaries. 

The work can be expensive and complicated. Fortunately, an array of federal and state grant programs exists to help cover the costs and provide technical expertise to landowners, like the Yankeys, who want to protect valuable natural resources on their property.

The goal is “to regenerate and let the land come back. The farm provided a living and now it’s time to give back,” Hope Yankey said.

#3 – From TODAY – It's a busy time to be Jeff Wamsley, the owner and creator of the world’s only Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. 

Most recently, the mythic Mothman creature has received its very own “Unsolved Mysteries” episode on Netflix. But the Mothman was well known long before the popular Netflix reboot came to be. Thanks to “The Mothman Prophecies” movie in 2002 starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney, the phenomenon is now part of pop culture, Wamsley says. 

Wamsley, who is also the author of “Mothman: Behind the Red Eyes” and co-author of “Mothman: The Facts behind the Legend” shares the Mothman’s eerie origin story, which dates back to November 1966 when the Silver Bridge collapsed.

The Allegheny Trail marks its 50th anniversary with a celebration at Green Bank Observatory…the annual Teen Academy gives West Virginia high school students the opportunity to experience FBI work…and Glenville State University introduces graduate level coursework in autism education…on today’s daily304.

#1 – From WV GAZETTE-MAIL  – What meanders its way through the heart of West Virginia’s eastern mountains, passing through 311 miles of forest and farmland from the Pennsylvania border to a junction with the Appalachian Trail atop Monroe County’s Peters Mountain at the Virginia frontier?

It’s the Allegheny Trail, or ALT for short, the little-known long-haul pathway that passes through four state parks, two state forests, three national forests and the Green Bank Observatory.

The graduate-level coursework will be offered through two online courses designed to enhance educators’ skills in autism education.

Participants must complete 30 hours of field-based classroom observation or documented experience with students with autism. GSU’s Department of Education will assist in arranging these experiences in public school settings. 

Upon successful completion of the coursework, the qualified individuals who hold appropriate certifications may apply to the West Virginia Department of Education for an additional endorsement in autism.

#2 – From WTRF-TV –  A new restaurant is open for business in the Ohio Valley.

Serving delicious, homestyle meals, Jusino’s Family Restaurant recently celebrated their grand opening in Follensbee, West Virginia.

Owner Robert Jusino says he has finally achieved his dream of having his own restaurant. He started out nearly 30 years ago as a prep cook and worked his way up to executive chef and running a few restaurants around the area.

“Then I decided this was my passion, this is my dream and with a little help from some very good friends, we were able to make this happen,” he said.

#3 – From WBOY-TV – The West Virginia Department of Economic Development recently gave a presentation at the Morgantown Area Partnership concerning the Build WV Act, which is meant to provide tax incentives with the goal of encouraging companies to build middle-income residential housing.

Business leaders from the construction, real estate, and baking industries were in attendance to learn about the act and how the north central region of West Virginia, specifically the area within 20 miles of Browns Mill, was one of 16 regions throughout the state selected for this program.

Meghan Smith, manager of business development for the West Virginia Department of Economic Development, said that when a new manufacturer moves to the area, they need to recruit workers. And recruiting workers requires the area to have adequate housing, so the Build WV Act is trying to spur the construction of that housing.
