Fall brings cooler weather, making it the perfect time to cast a line in WV’s streams and rivers…Touchstone Research Laboratory aims to create 1,000 new tech jobs in northern WV…and Clendenin Brewing Company’s new owners are loving their new home in Almost Heaven…on today’s daily304.
#1 – From WV STATE PARKS – Whether you’re a seasoned angler trying to become the next Master Angler or new to fishing, fall is a great time to cast a line in West Virginia.
Cooler temperatures and beautiful fall foliage create an ideal setting for a relaxing day on the water. Additionally, several hunting seasons open during the fall, which provides a unique opportunity for hunters and anglers to harvest game in the morning and fish in the afternoon or evening.
But one of the biggest benefits of fishing in the fall is that fish are also more likely to bite. As the water temperature drops, fish go on a feeding binge as they prepare for dormant, frigid winter months.

#2 – From THE INTELLIGENCER – Touchstone Research Laboratory has a goal to create 1,000 technical jobs in the Northern Panhandle by creating new products and spinning them off into their own companies.
Two examples of Touchstone creations are C-FOAM and Touchstone Advanced Composites, both purchased by Consol Energy for use in the aviation industry and
Touchstone still holds on to its operations that produce MetPreg, billed as the world’s strongest aluminum and created for the U.S. Navy to repair cracks in naval vessels.
Meanwhile, Touchstone’s research and development lab is growing and expanding, according to CEO Brian Joseph. The original building on the campus where C-FOAM was invented now has been demolished to make way for a larger machine shop building.
“We often think we have to go to certain places to do certain things, and I am of the view growing in recent years that that is just not important,” he said. “What is important is getting to scale on the number of tech jobs you have, because it will build upon itself.”

#3 – From GAZETTE-MAIL – A Cincinnati engineer and a nurse walk into a Clendenin brewery -- and two years later, they wind up owning the place!
That’s not the setup to a joke but rather the true story of husband and wife team Evan and Becky Harding, the new owners of Clendenin Brewing Company.
The couple came to the area two years ago for the Chili’N on the Elk Chili Cook-Off and Wine and Beer Festival and quickly fell in love with the brewery and the area. That prompted them to leave their high-stress jobs in the big city for the quiet countryside and small-town vibe of West Virginia.
The Hardings say they’ve received a lot of support from previous owners Matt and Nikki Holbert in seeing that the brewing company they founded undergoes a smooth transition.
