In Isaiah 42 the Father gives us the primary prescription for a race of broken humans to inherit the promise of the resurrection and coming Kingdom. Beholding the meekness of Jesus helps us understand the tenderness of God's heart, and makes sense of our calling to bear witness to His heart by taking up our cross and laying down our lives for our enemies. This teaching is a brief overview of the allegorical interpretation of the book of the Song of Songs. As Christians in the West, there is a tendency to imagine that the coming of the Spirit somehow replaces our call to take up our cross. Thinking that the finished work of the cross is finished with us, is to have a poor view of the Day of the Lord, when all our works and motives will be revealed by fire.

In Matthew 16:18-19, Jesus tells Peter, "you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." He then tells him, "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Throughout church history, these verses have been interpreted in a number of different ways. However, the primary point of this passage is that Christ is building a people worthy of inclusion in the coming resurrection of the righteous by means of His work on the cross. Christ crucified is the foundation of the church, and this foundation alone has the power to overcome death in the Day of the Lord.
