In Matthew 16:18-19, Jesus tells Peter, "you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." He then tells him, "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Throughout church history, these verses have been interpreted in a number of different ways. However, the primary point of this passage is that Christ is building a people worthy of inclusion in the coming resurrection of the righteous by means of His work on the cross. Christ crucified is the foundation of the church, and this foundation alone has the power to overcome death in the Day of the Lord.
