Its finny to me how my students have clinged to the song, "Careless in My Sleep", or they secretly make fun of me for it. Whatever the motive is, it makes me think about this song of mine quite a lot. Its a song with a lot of personal meaning and expression already, and when I went to find its acoustic unplugged version on my computer, no results came up. I needed to re-explore the song and lay it out without drums. I wanted to voice the depth and reverberence of the song's meaning in a new version so I brought some new strings out to my lap steel guitar and the very first note I recorded was the first note you hear in this new unplugged version. From there, everything was just singing through and it was really enjoyable not just to play, but also to mix. This was the most time I spent mixing a song in a while, and I think it shines through in the mix. Its a free mp3 download of one of my personal favorites, and I hope you will enjoy it! Mixed a song in Acid Music Studio for the first time in about a decade. I'm impressed with the fluidity of editing but its going ot be quite a learning curve getting all of the shortcuts, movements, and audio processing features down to a science. A good challenge for the holiday season of creative production. The result today is the first new demo, and the first fast paced release here on the podcast in quite a while. On November 20th, 17th I had the chance to go and interview my former teacher and mentor Melba Pattillo Beals. Melba was my radio teacher at Dominican University of California, she was also Communications Department chair, and this interview features conversation about history, parenting, and loving yourself and others around you. In a year and a half at San Rafael, I was fortunate enough to gain a wider lens to focus my own perspective. I was taken back mentally to the college classroom above the library where we met twice a week. I hope you enjoy this conversation nearly as much as I did. It was really nice to sit and discuss philosophy and outlook on life with Melba.

Melba inspired me to take a challenging road once and a while, and value myself along the road of life, even when you can't see what's coming around the corner. There were a lot of takeaway quotes from Melba, and I decided to highlight a few of the most motivating quotes with on screen caption.

This interview is a touching part of my past and my future simultaneously. I think we all can gain some insights and perspective from Melba's wisdom. We discuss education, faith, and potential, among many other topics. Not just a conversation about Central High School in Little Rock, we discuss a wide range of topics and I found it both informative and entertaining. To me, Its a cross section of American history and humanity. It was a pleasure to get to spend so much time discussing the uplifting side of the human spirit. Thank you Melba!

This Thanksgiving I led a prayer service at my school. With my new webcam on my desk, it struck me that I might record my thoughts about unity, togetherness, and gratitude with inspiration from the way my Professor at Dominican University, Rabbi Henry Schreibman taught me, to compare, appreciate, and respect traditions of all faiths. In this short prayer service I share opinions from a Muslim blogger in London, a traditional Jewish story of violinist Itzhak Perlman breaking a string on stage, and a prayer from a Christian looking to slow down the prayer before the Thanksgiving meal.

My Rogue Lap Steel Guitar showed up yesterday! It was late when the box hit the porch, but that didn't stop me from plugging in, tuning up to C6 for the first time, and recording an instrumental song in under an hour before finishing my lesson prep. I didn't have a name when I went to sleep, but this morning the San Clemente sunset was in my mind, and here it is, my first instrumental using only slide guitar. Really fun and I can't wait to get back to the studio tonight and next week to really set up some solid new original material! Thanks for listening!

 It's been a few weeks if not a few months since I sat down and just recorded some instrumental music it was mostly electronic. Ever since I got my 12 string in my new Taylor guitar spent most of my recording time recording acoustic guitars. I've been experimenting with different microphone positions different plane styles and working in steel guitar as well. Today I decided it would be fun to sit down with the digital screen and compose a B and then try to put some synthesizers and instruments over the top. It's also been a while since I experimented with some strings and I thought I would put them on the off beat.

 The resulting recording has a really good group to it and remind me of when I recorded the car instrumental commercial music maybe last year. So it was really fun to put it together in about an hour I had to complete a track and even a little bit of a bridge to very the tempo and the main rhythms. The song was recorded in B minor and I even plates and piano on it. I thought the ballot came out great and it's a perfect Halloween type groove even though I'm it's a day late. When my package was lost, I was so set on getting a Dunlop Lap Dawg Steel slide (chromed brass), that I went out and bought one. I had no idea they were made close by in Benicia, California. That's pretty cool! What was even cooler, was bringing it to my room this morning to give it a first go, no editing, just a straight cut of recording over an acoustic bed with my trusty old guitar "Mitch". So here it is! A fresh recording, unedited for audio sake, to hear what the Dunlop Lap Dawg sounds like in the hands of a first-time amateur, I am going to LOVE playing this!
