  • Avoiding "Post Exhibition Come Down" [Episode 12]

    Send a text

    Show Notes:

Are you focused on the goal, or are you focused on the work?

As an artist striving to climb the ladder of the creative industry, we can often loose sight of the work whilst being swept up in the chase for our next big goal. In fast forward, with no pauses or full stops. We replace each feeling of momentum with another mountain to climb. Constantly putting our satisfaction over there, perched way above our current present moment.

This episode is a reminder to stay buoyant and rest within the process.

    Consider this…

When was the last time you deferred your own satisfaction?

Beckoning us to stray from the beaten path, this painting explores the hikers' perspective through untrodden trails.Embracing this new outlook, we find ourselves both lost and found, immersed in the beauty of wandering and the joy of returning to our truest selves. Following the tracks of unknown animals, I am constantly reminded that some paths lead to water, whilst others are a dead end. Either way both are an adventure.

  • In Her Own Words [Part 1 Episode 10]

    Send a text

    Show Notes:

In many ways this painting has felt like a channelled message from my grandmother Norah. I find myself immersed in the cherished memories of her flora and fauna reports, the tender act of scrapbooking old christmas cards, and the joy of preserving nature's beauty by pressing flowers and leaves between the pages of books. I recall jars filled with buttons and a magical rock that seemed to summon rain. Through this artwork, I celebrate the profound significance of life's simple things—the unassuming moments that infuse our existence with true meaning.

In a world of distractions, this painting is a gentle reminder of the art of paying attention. It beckons us to embrace the present with all our senses, capturing the essence of fleeting moments and treasuring them in the depths of our hearts.

"The gifts of paying attention" are woven into the fabric of existence, inviting us to slow down, to savor the delicate details that often go unnoticed. The beauty of a wilting flower, the rustle of leaves in the wind, the joy of a simple jar filled with buttons (non of which matched)—these are the treasures that enrich our lives and make our journeys more profound.

Through this artwork, I aspire to convey the significance of the seemingly insignificant, the magnificence in the mundane. In the act of painting, I found myself transported to a place where the past and present merge, where memories intertwine with the whispers of nature's wisdom.

In memory of my grandmother and all those who have left behind a legacy of wonder, "The gifts of paying attention" stands as a tribute to the profound richness of a life well-lived, where each moment is cherished, and each gift is embraced with gratitude. May this artwork kindle a spark in the hearts of those who behold it, reminding them of the beauty in the smallest gestures, the profound depth in the most ordinary experiences, and the transformative power of paying attention.

    Show Notes:

A new realisation has emerged as I bring my new collection of paintings to completion:

I am not showing up in the studio to get something done. I am showing up to find a place for being within the work.

This episode is an introduction to my new collection of Playscapes, and an honest reflection on the past few months. Each painting has become a lesson in becoming more present within the creative process.

How can we step into wonder and create from a place of awe?

When familiarity begins to close in, how do we choose a different path?

  • Breaking Free of Creative Boxes [Episode 7]

    Send a text

    Show Notes:

When we break free of our own creative box an inevitable shift occurs within our work. We then need to build up the courage to let this shift take on a life of its own. This week, as I record this podcast I can honestly say that ten tons of weight has been lifted of my shoulders. With a brand new collection of work underway for Curatorial + Co , this last couple of weeks has reminded me that a single brush-stroke can transcend thought and create it’s own s-p-a-c-e. One that leaves us standing somewhere in between.

This new collection of work is not about reaching the end goal. It does not question what art is, but rather what art does, whilst creating a place for being every step along the way.

I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

    Enjoy.

Deadlines are now looming and the client is awaiting for a sneak peek at her paintings. There is no better time to talk through the finer details of my commission process, and some of the deliberate choices I have made to build boundaries with my clients right from the get go.

Back tracking from last episode, I have been in hermit mode refilling my creative well and participating in a few weeks of reading deprivation. No socials. No reading. No TV. The goal was to eliminate external information so that I was forced back into creative play.

At the beginning of this episode I speak about the progress of my play panels and how they are beginning to generate a fresh new energy for me to bring forward in my larger work.

  • Creative Risks [Episode 5]

    Send a text

    Show Notes:

As visionary thinkers we often seek immediate success. We forget that we are allowed to make bad art, we are allowed to play, we are allowed to take risks and we are allowed to fail. A wall towards the bigger vision is built of many bricks, and I am constantly reminding myself that not every work needs to be everything.

Join me in the studio as I walk you through some of the creative risks I have made this week.

As I move closer towards the completion of my latest painting discernment becomes a slow but integral part to the process. At this stage each individual mark becomes a question to be answered.

How does this mark make me feel?

Do I feel restricted, or more expansive?

In order hear the creative solutions we must first remember that in order to have self expression, we must first have a self to express. As we lose our vagueness about ourself, our values, our life situation, we become available to the moment. It is there that we find our creative self.

When I switch on the mic to record these episodes, I always take a moment to remind myself that words hold weight. I never know how these conversations are going to touch someone, inspire them or trigger them to the core. What I do know, is that right from the very beginning I have promised to speak from a place of raw honesty and share the reality without the bullshit. Episode 4 is no different.

There are moments of uncontrollable emotion in this episode, where I allow tears to flow freely out of respect for the creative child within (her name is “Joi”).

I share insights into some of the most vulnerable parts of my creative vision and speak about the making, whitnessing and purchasing art as an act of self love.
