  • Halloween Boutique Psychotronic Reviews - Volume 016 - PARADISE COVE (2021)
The thriller subgenre comes in many different forms.  Back in the 1970’s, the political thriller was big, in the 1980’s it was the courtroom thriller, and in the 1990’s it was the erotic-thriller.  And yet, no matter how they come, they draw a very diverse audience since they seem to include everything interesting in a fictional story.  The new thriller, PARADISE COVE (2021), was just released on February 12th, 2021, and though seeming to be another solid entry into the genre, it also has a bit of interesting subtext as well.
Young couple Knox (Todd Grinnell) and Tracy (Mena Survari) inherit the home of Knox’s late mother.  The home has damage from a fire, but its value seems unlimited since it is beachfront property in Malibu, California.  As they begin to clean up the property, they discover, Bree (Kristen Bauer van Straten) , a homeless woman, living on the residence.  Unfortunately for the couple, they discover a scandalous back-story about the property that could jeopardize all their lives.
The movie is directed by Martin Guigui and written by Sherry Klein.  And the cast includes long time genre favorite Krista Allen.  Rather than being a straight thriller, the movie also has a subtext about societal constructs such as property rights, subcastes, trophy spouses, and gentrification.  Your co-hosts take a look at this interesting film and give their thoughts.

  • Dark Discussions Podcast - Episode 474 - CANDYMAN (1992)
One of the more interesting horror monster icons is the villain from the 1992 fright movie, CANDYMAN.  The film is based off the short story “The Forbidden” written by Clive Barker.  And the story is from his well received short story collection BOOKS OF BLOOD from 1984.  The movie’s growing success led to a number of sequels as well as an upcoming remake.
The movie is a bit different than the story; the tale has moved from England to the U.S. city of Chicago.  Helen (Virginia Madsen), a graduate student, is writing a paper on urban legends.  Though curious with many tales, the inner city legend of Candy Man interests her most.  As a result her paper can be expanded to include such topics as gentrification, class, and hardship of the poor.  While navigating through areas of the city that aren’t safe for a young, attractive woman as herself, her discoveries may lead to a greater danger than people.
Tony Todd stars as the iconic titled villain and brings a menace that tops some of the best monster icons in horror cinema.  Though not as well known of his contemporaries, director/screenwriter Bernard Rose turns an interesting topic to a cult classic.  Also of note is that Philip Glass scored the film.  A Patreon pick from our listeners, Dark Discussions takes a look at this cult classic and give their thoughts.

  • Halloween Boutique Psychotronic Reviews – Volume 015 - GO/DON'T GO (2021) - The Review
Welcome to the post-apocalypse.  Most folks are gone.  You are all alone.  And so begins the new film by first time feature length director Alex Knapp entitled GO/DON’T GO (2021).  Released early Q1 2021, the movie is another in the line of end-of-the-world survival story pictures.  But unlike the typical pandemic and zombie films, this one does a few things very differently.
Adam (Alex Knapp) is all alone.  The apocalypse has come and gone and left him by himself in the world.  His life encompasses his home and the small rural towns outside Albany, New York.  With no one around, he tries to live a life of normalcy.  But his memories of his fiancé who he lovingly nicknamed K (Olivia Luccardi) haunts him.  Will he be able to survive in this dystopian world or will his inner demons destroy him?
Olivia Luccardi, co-star of IT FOLLOWS (2014) and THE DEUCE (2017-2019), co-stars as K, a character that no longer is there yet permeates every scene of the film.  Though an independent feature, GO/DON’T GO has received positive reviews including some from top critics such as the Austin Chronicle.  Halloween Boutique Psychotronic Reviews takes a look at this very unique feature.
