  • Dark Discussions Podcast - Episode 478 - HUNTER HUNTER (2020)
HUNTER HUNTER, the 2020 horror/thriller movie from director/screenwriter Shawn Linden was a highly regarded film by critics.  This Canadian movie surprised many when it first appeared and received much buzz by movie fans.  By the end of the year it appeared on many best-of lists.  Yet its audience was slow to grow.  Marketed as something that it wasn’t, many thriller fans passed it by.
Joseph (Devon Sawa) and Anne  Mersault  (Camille Sullivan) live in the outback woods of Canada with their daughter Renee.  They are fur trappers and live off the land.  Unfortunately a very large wolf has begun eating their trapping bait as well as the animals they have captured for their food and money.  When Joseph heads out to find the vicious animal, he stumbles upon a horror that may be more terrifying than just a carnivorous predator.
With its 94% Rotten Tomatoes score by critics, the movie has slowly been found by fans of thrillers and horror movies.  Though overlooked by many, HUNTER HUNTER has been rediscovered by those who had missed it the prior year.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this little film and gives their thoughts.

  • Dark Discussions Podcast - Episode 477 - DEATHGASM (2015)
New Zealand is oddly not thought of as a hotbed for genre cinema, and yet some of the biggest directors and stars come from there as well as set locations and special effects.  But even the smaller film get noticed.  And one of them was 2015’s DEATHGASM, a film about the “nerd” and outcast who gravitates to heavy metal music.  But what if the cult-like symbolism of the bands, music, and albums actually lead to the summoning of demons and succubuses.
When high schooler, Brodie, moves in with his fundamentalist Christian uncle’s family, he begins a friendship with Zakk, a record store clerk.  The two along with friends Dion and Giles form a heavy metal band called Deathgasm. They have a strange encounter with a former music star who gives them a special record album.  Their band covers the album song The Black Hymn.  Unfortunately the song is actually a hidden spell that unleashes a group of demons and cultist into the world.  With Brodie’s beautiful girlfriend Medina, the band tries to stop the apocalypse from destroying the world.
With its coming of age story, and its over the top monsters, nudity, and gore, DEATHGASM became an immediate cult classic on its release.  The movie was brought to North America and Europe and gained even more fans.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this film, chosen by one of the podcast’s Patreon supporters, and gives their thought on this horror comedy.

  • Dark Discussions Podcast - Episode 476 - THE GIANT (2020)
Australian actress Odessa Young, the actress that starred in the recently concluded The Stand miniseries on CBS ALL ACCESS, stars in the Southern gothic tale, THE GIANT (2020).  The film popped up on iTunes late in the year where it received a quick yet short amount of buzz.  Some of the buzz was because of its trailer.  The trailer had a moody and brooding atmosphere.
After the suicide of her mother a year ago, Charlotte (Odessa Young) tries to celebrate her high school graduation with her friends.  When the bodies of two young woman from a neighboring town are found, a once dormant serial killer seems to have become active again.  Oddly, the murders began when her old boyfriend once again returns to town and the two begin to rekindle their once strong romance.
Whether the film is art house, horror, coming of age, a Southern gothic or all of the above, the movie has received mixed reviews from critics, receiving exactly 50%.  Audiences seem to be less enthusiastic with reviews as low as 0% (believe it or not).  Dark Discussions takes a look at David Raboy’s directorial debut and give their thoughts.
