Dark Starts backcountry splitboarding podcast presents Dean Whitehead owner of The Splitboard Shop.
Dean started splitboarding during the days of “shoot a gun at the mountain side and if it didn't slide then it was safe to ride”
After building his own Voile DIY splitboard his engineering education kicked in and he couldn’t stop himself from getting involved building splitboards and working with companies to further advance the gear.
Dean talks about products from SP, Voile, Burton and Gnu. He breaks down how the products work and why he chooses to sell them.
Dean graduated college in Arizona with a degree in electrical engineering. While in college he got his taste for backcountry just by hiking around the mountains with his board strapped to his back. He took a job in Hillsboro, Oregon where he started riding on Mt. Hood. After building a DIY splitboard he started a mail order splitboard company called Mountain and Terrain Technologies (MNT). Here he started giving companies feedback on the gear they were sending him. In 2007 he moved to Huntsville, Utah where he now runs The Splitboard Shop. This website is a one stop shop for all your splitboarding needs. You can buy new or used boards and even talk to someone who will answer all your questions about splitboarding gear.

Guillaume and his father founded one of the first guiding companies in Whistler, BC.

After a close encounter with an avalanche he became dedicated to learning more about guiding in the backcountry.

He breaks down the processes he uses to assess the risks of touring and shares with us what you need to know before you go into the mountains.
Guillaume moved out west as a teen searching for bigger mountains with deeper powder. The search brought himself and his father to Whistler, BC where they founded Coast Mountain Guides in 1998. Guillaume has 20 years of guiding experience that he uses to bring guests iconic backcountry experiences that show you Whistler before the condos, lifts and shops. You can hear his passion for exploring the outdoors as he talks about avalanche safety while explaining analogies that made us view the mountains in a new light.
