My name is Darshan Doshi, as you might already know by now, I have a fantastic guest with me, Jaideep Merchant, as a part of the investment podcast series. I've invited a lot of fund managers, individuals, personal finance advisors from whom I get to learn, and hopefully you get to learn about how to get rich, how to get wealthy by making sound investments. But it's not only about getting rich, right? Wealthy means managing your relationships, your life and money plays a small but significant part of it. So how do we think about investments over the next few years, over the next decade? We are in India, but as an investor, you could invest in any asset class, anywhere in the world, it could be equities in India or the US. It could be cryptocurrencies, it could be real estate, it could be startups. Right? So we are going to decode this as a part of the investment series today. So let me give a quick overview of Jaideep Merchant. Jaideep is the chief investment officer and director at Janak Merchant Securities. Janak is one of the oldest portfolio management services provider in India from Pune. And we're going to talk on a whole range of topics. We're going to talk about how to do equity research, how to do investing in equities in India, personal finance and financial independence in this podcast. I hope you enjoy it as I'm sure we have a lot to learn from Jaideep. Jaideep, Janak Merchant Securities is one of the oldest portfolio management services out of Pune. Can you just share a little bit about your investment approach towards this?

[00:02:13] Jaideep Merchant : Yeah, so we've been around for almost 45 yearsnow, and we are a part of the city in Pune. And our business has been set up here in the late mid seventies. And we had an opportunity to set up the regional stock exchange in Pune in 1983. So as such, we are one of the first pioneers of investing in the city of Pune. Now it's the traditional broking firm, which we then and somewhere along the way we felt that transaction oriented services were not in the interests of investors. There was inherent conflicts of interest in that business, and we took a very difficult decision in 2005 after running a broking business for almost 30 years to move into an asset management business, which is generally a fee-based kind of a business and the outcome of investors decide how much, whether you make money or not. So that's how we got into this business. Now, as far as our portfolio construction and our investment philosophy is we are a benchmark agnostic fund. We don't, we manage money on a discretionary basis. So investor has no role to play in. Once. Money has been given to us investor has no role to play in what we can do with that fund. We are benchmark agnostic, as I said, and we don't look at a benchmark and then decide what will go into the portfolio like generally how a mutual fund does. So small cap, mid cap, large cap, all this doesn't matter to us. There has to be a reasonable opportunity to money. And we'll go and allocate money. Generally we try, there can be very high sectoral weightages, or company weightages since we are not restricted in our approach. If our conviction is high in a particular industry or in a particular company we will put money where our mouth is. And we, since we invest all our money, where our client's money is invested all our money is also invested in the same stocks. So we'll put our money where our mouth is and if we like something we'll go out and take an aggressive investment call on those companies or sectors. We generally avoid debt, high debt companies, , so that is something, balance sheet hygiene is very important for us when we spend.

[00:00:26] Parin Gala: Thank you Darshan, pleasure to be here.

[00:00:28] Darshan Doshi: Thank you. So who is Parin? Parin Gala is the vice-president of research, and fund management and accounting at SageOne. We're going to get to SageOne and we're going to hear from Parin. What does SageOne do? And how it can help, investors invest better and make money. But we are also going to talk about small and mid cap stocks, investing criteria. How do you think about managing your own money and personal finance? So we have a lot of good discussions to have. I hope you enjoy this and find it useful. So Parin, I gave a quick overview of who you are and your, research and lots of years of understanding the small and mid cap stocks in the Indian context, you and I have had talks about different asset classes as well. But can you give it a quick or what are you about what does SageOne do, the fund thesis, the fund size and what are you looking at?

[00:01:36] Parin Gala: Yeah. So, SageOne investment managers is a SEBI registered PMS which started as a investment advisor in 2012, and we converted to PMS in 2016. So the history is still there. And, you know, SageOne has always been investing in mainly mid cap, small cap micro-cap stocks over the years. Today SageOne, very proudly we are one of the large ones. So we manage almost 2200 crores of AUM. I joined SageOne in 2018. That time we would be what, maybe 20-50. So the journey has been brilliant. Markets have been kind, plus obviously our performance has spoken loads and investors have been hopefully happy with us. So, yeah. And so Samit Vartak, our founder and CIO, is at the helm, who drives SageOne, is a great mentor and lots of learning from him. And then we have a strong team now with research of maybe about, we are six people at the team of 15. And going strong and hopefully much stronger.

[00:02:45] Darshan Doshi: And so just on that going from about 200 crores to 2200 crores AUM, congratulations on that, looks like you are the lucky charm for SageOne as well, but on a serious note what is the thesis? What are you, what are you guys looking at and what is the niche that you operate in?

[00:03:07] Parin Gala: So if you see SageOne predominantly invests in mid-caps, and and so we have something called, as an offering, we had SCP, called SageOne core portfolio, which has been since inception of SageOne. And that was mid and small cap portfolio where we invest in. So, if you see the, definition by SEBI, so leaving out the top hundred market caps, which are the large caps and from 101 to 250, that's mid cap and below 250 are small caps. So our universe is that. So typically we would invest anywhere between a 500, 600 crore market cap upto 30-40,000 crore. And the lower you come, what happens is that, there's less research in such companies, they are less identified yes, right now with digital and, you know, information decimation being faster, it's now better, discovered, but earlier it wasn't that much. Right? So that is where your forte lies. And see investing in mid and small cap is a little tricky, you know, because there you have to really deep dive into the businesses and all, you know, large cap companies they already are mature, and, a lot of research happens like in the HDFCs of the world, Asian Paints of the world, but the smaller companies, you don't find so much research. So where our forte lies, deep dive, a lot of channel checks happen and a lot of meeting with various vendors, supply chain guys. So it's, it's a long process and that's where our forte lies. [00:00:00] Darshan Doshi: Gaining financial independence. This is another topic which is very close to my heart. As a part of the personal finance podcast series, today, I want to talk to you about gaining financial independence. We're going to cover why financial independence is important to you? What does it mean to be financially independent and last, how do you get there? What are the behaviors? What are the patterns? What are the actions that you need to take to become financially independent?

So let's get to it. The very first part, why is gaining financial independence important to you?

Financial Freedom gives optionality, flexibility and choice.

Wouldn't it be nice to work on what you want to work, to do what you want to do when you want to do, who do you want to work with, how you want to work? This kind of freedom to do what you want and really pursue your passion, your interests, your curiosities is really what is important. It gives meaning to life.

What is the opposite of this? If we invert this, is basically running the mill, running the race and really doing things because you need to earn money. Are you chasing money or are you chasing freedom? I am chasing freedom, freedom to do what I want to do, when I want to do. Doing DASAR is my expression to do what I want to do with the people that I want to do this with. I have a great team and I'm very fortunate, to do so.

So financial independence gives you optionality. It gives you, choices to do what you want to do. That's why financial independence is important.

Now, what does financial independence mean? It means can you generate enough assets, enough investments so that the interest/payments from investments enable you to run your life without having to worry about earning money.

Let me explain that very simply. What this means is if you want to live in Pune (India) with a family of four -- you need about INR 18 lakhs a year. If you were to park about two and a half crore Rupees in fixed deposits, you would generate about INR 18 to 20 lakh rupees in annual income, which means you could do whatever you wanted to do without having to worry, to get a job, to get up at nine & be there till six, and just go around in circles. So that is what I mean by financial independence.

It also means it gives you choice to work and take on more risks. Financial independence takes time. I gave an example of two and a half crores in total assets and total investments that you need to become financially independent in a place like Pune, but maybe you, your financial goals are, "I need a BMW or I want to have two houses, or I want to travel around the globe", then suddenly that 18 lakh rupees per year become 30 lakh rupees a year. So how are you going to, like how many assets do you need? How much money do you need in investments to get that amount of money? Again, "what is the fastest way to get to financial independence?"

Be frugal. Cut down your expenses. Be very, very frugal. Increase your savings, your investments, and make sound

My name is Darshan Doshi, and as a part of the personal finance and investment podcast series, I have an incredible guest with me today, Jaydeep Doshi. Jaydeep is the CEO of Proinvest Wealth. And we are going to talk on a whole range of topics today, all related to money. That includes wealth management, fund management, and how do you gain financial independence. Financial independence is a very important topic at DASAR. To the point where we even have launched a 90 day program, an online program, which helps you cultivate a behavior of managing your own money and kind of getting towards financial independence very, very quickly. So, welcome Jaydeep. Thanks a lot for joining us on this podcast.

[00:01:05] Jaydeep Doshi: Thanks Darshan. It's amazing to be here.

[00:01:08] Darshan Doshi: I know you have a wealth of knowledge about investing, about personal finance, about financial independence. So my first question to you, you've operated in wealth management for some time, quite a few years, few decades. But what does wealth management mean to you and how do you figure out the value chain of the sector?

[00:01:32] Jaydeep Doshi: Yes. So basically wealth management is first of all, is what it is not, is not about investing for short term. So wealth management for me is planning, execution, and following up with those investments. Also, one important thing for me is that wealth management is not a one-time job. It's not that I talk to you today, I have these financial plans, goals, and I do it on a paper, and I tell you yes this is your financial plan. Wealth management to me is ongoing thing. So there are a lot of changes which will happen to you in your life. And I want to relate to everybody who's ready to be with me for the next 20 years, 30 years, enjoy compounding, do the right things, whether it is debt, equity or any other investment product, but definitely not speculation.

[00:02:23] Darshan Doshi: Excellent. Thanks a lot. It's like fitness, if you have to lose weight, if you have to gain muscle, if you want to be extremely fit, you can't just do it over a weekend or once a year, you have to put in discipline. One hour, at least every day, if not three times a week. And so personal finance and the program that I talked about the 90 day program on financial independence on DASAR is about this behavioral finance, is about building that habit. And I'm really happy that you're speaking about this, which leads me to my next question. Financial independence is something that is very popular in the Western culture, is something that is becoming very popular in India right now. And most importantly, what financial independence does is it gives you a lot of confidence. It gives you an opportunity to do the things that are important to you. So, suppose, you are in the lower income or middle class family in India, or maybe you are starting off your career. How does one work towards getting financial independence?

[00:03:37] Jaydeep Doshi: So, it's a very important question and very close to my heart also because, the first thing, when I started my career, it used to be, equity markets about speculation and all that. It was never looked upon like an investment tool. A lot of people used to buy ULIPS, as the first investment tool, because they were scared that they would lose money in stock markets. And, I think that was, not the right thing to start your investment journey. You start early by doing small amounts of investment and with God's grace today, you have a lot of financial products like mutual funds who offer you, professional management at almost negligible price, which is almost lowest in the world now, very close to, lower than the average price that is charged globally. Welcome Mandar.[00:00:32] Mandar Mhatre: Thank you, Darshan. Nice to have you.[00:00:34] Darshan Doshi: Thank you. So, today we are going to talk on a whole range of topics. Mandar is the CEO of Apex Fund, India, but he's also an investor. He's been an entrepreneur, he's an author of a book on finance and on money. And he is also a teacher. So we have someone who's got a really rich experience, being a fund manager, being on the back end of how a fund runs. You've done so many things in your life, right? You been an entrepreneur, you're running Apex Fund India, you've written a book, this book called 'Papa don't preach', right? Maybe we'll first start with the book because personal finance, money, wealth is an important topic within DASAR. So maybe you can share a little bit about what made you write this book. What is this book about?[00:01:37] Mandar Mhatre: Sure. So the inspiration for the book was really, once when I was standing in one of the bank queues, what I saw was the banker sold a really old gentleman an annuity product saying this product returns 36% per annum. That put my curiosity, I was wondering which product returns, 36% per annum and when I looked through the product, it was really an annuity product clearly mis-sold to an old gentleman. And I found examples of this time and again, not just in fixed deposits or within the bank, but obviously the equity markets in mutual funds space, in insurance space, a lot of friends would come to me ask about what do they do about specific money. Then, that was really the thought and the genesis of it. What I feel is that, unfortunately, there are too many papa's who preach you about money, right? And, if you basically break down finance into it's basic, you really can understand it. You can make decisions for yourself and at least ensure that you are not fooled by others.[00:02:46] Darshan Doshi: Okay. This is a trust-based industry, money management, but, what we keep hearing are the stories like you suggested, products, being sold, expectations, higher expectations or misrepresentations being made. Absolutely. But you know, at DASAR, and personally, I believe you need to take control of your own money. You can't delegate. This is not a topic that can be delegated onto someone else. So, we just wanted to understand, you know, what are some other things that you've discussed in this book about money management?[00:03:25] Mandar Mhatre: So, this book is purely focused on what's available in the Indian market. It starts by looking at the most basic product, fixed deposits. Then there are a few concepts within fixed deposits, which people need to be aware of. Then it slowly moves to more interesting products, it moves to corporate deposits and mutual funds, equities, insurance, annuitys. It also talks about, uh, how do you manage your debt? What happens if you've fallen into a debt trap, how do you manage credit card? How do you deal with agents and advisors? You know, what are the questions you need to ask? It also looks at a bit more funkier asset classes. It looks at startup investing, it looks at art as an investment whether diamond could be an investment option or not, and then eventually it all gets into talking about how do you build wealth over a long period of time? How do you think about wealth? What are the first steps when you are thinking about wealth, what do you do? Or what do you not do? Once you started to accumulate wealth, how do you ensure how that wealth goes and you eventually, how do you distribute that wealth?Because everybody who's going to die is not

Welcome back to DASAR. As a part of the personal finance podcast series, today, we are going to talk about creating generational wealth. This is a topic, which is of very high interest to me. What is generational wealth? We are going to talk about that. We're also going to talk about how do you create generational wealth over the next 15 to 20 year period?

You might say, well, 15 to 20 years, that's a long time. Well, it is going to take long, right? There are no get-rich, quick-rich schemes out there. And if there are, I probably want to stay away from them. So what does generational wealth mean? It basically means, do I have enough money to take care of my expenses for this lifetime for my family, for my children and their children. So can I create enough wealth for two generations after me, that is what I mean by generational wealth. Now that's a very far-fetched view. You're talking about creating wealth for about the next hundred years. We don't even know what's going to happen tomorrow.

COVID has made it extremely difficult for us to predict what's going to happen tomorrow. So let's take a step back and let's think about generational wealth, what it means to me. And so I'm going to give a situation. Think you are working in the technology field in software development, you're earning about 10 lakh rupees per annum, and your family income is about 20 lakhs per annum. How are you going to create generational wealth? The way I would go about it is doing two or three simple things. First thing you have to cut down on your expenses. Savings. You'll have to get into the habit of managing your personal finance. You have to know where you're spending your money, and then every time you think about spending big, you need to ask yourself a question. Is this taking me closer towards my financial goal? Or is this something that's giving me relief or joy in the short term? For example, I purchased a BMW and it's been my lifelong dream to purchase a BMW. It took me seven years to save enough money, make investment so that those investments on those savings grew, before I hit the target and then purchased a BMW. Now, the other way to look at this would be to just take a car loan. If you fall in the income bracket and you are able to get that much income, then you can get that loan and then pay it off over the next 10 years. Now, I don't believe in debt. I think debt doesn't help me sleep peacefully at night.

And so, I've tried to stay away from debt or even making financial investments in debt instruments. I may be right. I may be wrong, but it's just what I'm comfortable with. So that is my next point. What are you comfortable with? What is your investment philosophy? What is your way and your approach towards money, and that is going to help you move closer towards creating generational wealth.

Now if you are from an Indian family, probably your parents have, earned a lot. They have saved a lot. Our parents' generation typically is known to be extremely frugal. Namely, because there was not enough money to go around in the 1980s in the 1990s. So they probably made a home for themselves, they've provided education to you. Be thankful, be grateful, but what about you? What have you done? How is it that you are going to hit your income goals?

So the next topic within this podcast, I want to talk about is increasing your income bracket, because if you there's only that much expenses that you can reduce down to. If you're living in a place like Pune, probably 18 lakh rupees a year is enough to run the family of four. You might even save a little bit , on that 18 lakh rupees a year, but really if you're kind of making 20 lakhs, how can you go in the 50 lakh income bracket?

Darshan Doshi: Welcome back to DASAR. My name is Darshan Doshi, as you probably already know. I have another fantastic guest with me today, Rohan Wekhande.  He's a friend of mine. I've known him for a few years. Inspired by him. And this should be a really interesting podcast for you today. This is the part of the D2C brands podcast series on DASAR. So Rohan, welcome to DASAR.

Rohan Wekhande: Thank you for inviting me, Darshan. It's a great pleasure. Your podcasts have been a learning experience for me personally as well. So I think I'm glad to be here. I hope I can add value to the listeners.

Darshan Doshi: I've known you for a few years. I'm pretty sure there's a lot to learn for many people, including me. So what we are going to do today is we're going to talk about D2C brands. What does it take to start a D2C brand? The early days from selecting a product to launching a product, to figuring out the online selling channels to logistics, operations and the whole lot. So how do you go from starting or  identifying a product to maybe about 10 lakh rupees of revenue per month. Last week we covered Shoptimize where Mangesh said, Shoptimize can help you go from 10 lacs to over a crore in monthly revenue. So, but what we are doing is now we are going to go behind, the first part of it. So Rohan, before we get to D2C brand and your own brand Fitster5, I want to talk about you. And you inspired me to get on my fitness journey. I remember you maybe five, seven years ago, starting your own fitness journey, and that changed your life,  not only from a physical front, but even as a person from a career front also. So, how has fitness helped you launch Fitster5?

Rohan Wekhande: As an entrepreneur, we always say that there has to be a problem statement, which should come from within, right? So  I always wanted to start something of my own. And, during that time, what happened was,  I'm a tennis player. So I always wanted to do something physical every evening. Otherwise I would become cranky. I couldn't eat well, I couldn't sleep well. So,  then when we started doing jobs and all those things, so tennis kind of takes a backseat. So I started gym that's when I started, getting hooked to Gym and fitness as a whole. And when I wanted to start something of my own, it has been a very interesting journey, . Because, after there was a point in time in my life where I said that enough of the job. And I wanted to start something of my own. E-commerce was just starting up in India in 2015-16, and I was mentoring one or two of students, where I was part of an entrepreneurship school or there. And I started researching about the same. And I found it fantastic. Scott Whitler was one of the first podcast which I heard on building brands onlinehe is a very famous Amazoner  who has been a millennial by selling products on Amazon in the US. So it inspired me and I started researching about it. I had stumbled upon this one idea of  doing  hand-embroidered office wear for women because women shop a lot. That's what the notion was. And I thought that let's jump into that, I travelled, across the Western part of India, met artisans. We started the business quickly. In 40 days, I was up and running with that business. After three months, I realized that I don't want to do this. What problem I'm solving, what's my personality that I'm bringing into this product line? But good thing happened was I understood the business. I understood how e-commerce works. And during this particular time in there, my subconscious mind, I started thinking what to do, how to do, I wanted to buy a shaker protein shaker for,  myself. And India didn't have great potential there. It had this very bad looking plastic bottle. I hate plastics by the way. And it didn't
