Washington guard Daejon Davis and head coach Mike Hopkins spoke to the media after the Huskies lost to Winthrop 82-74 Saturday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.
Washington lost the Apple Cup in spectacular fashion last night. It wasn't a close game. Heck, this game seamed to be over the moment Washington stepped on the field. Why was that? Apparently they thought this "new" coaching staff would run the same scheme that Mike Leach ran during his seven years as the head of the Washington State. They chose to run the same defensive scheme that had helped them dominate their cross-state rivals and it was a failure.
The Cougars rolled up 454 yards of offense and quarterback Jayden de Laura set himself up for free drinks at the The Coug and Valhalla (once he turns 21 of course) for the rest of his life by going 27 of 32 for 245 yards while rushing for another 31.
In addition to de Laura's outstanding performance, tailback Max Borghi rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns and the Cougar defense limited the Huskies to just 200 yards on the night, including just 63 in the first half.
In his first start for the Huskies, Sam Huard looked, well, like a freshman. He showed some flashes to be sure, but he also showed he still has a long way to go by throwing four interceptions.
The guys from Dawgman -- Kim Grinolds, Chris Fetters and Scott Eklund -- broke down what they saw during Washington's State's dominating 40-13 win at Husky Stadium on Saturday night. They wondered why the coaches just refused to change their game plan as contest moved along.
They also broke down the latest news on the coaching search and talked about where some of the top candidates could land as well as which ones could wind up being the next hire for Washington athletic director Jen Cohen.

Sean McGrew, Kamari Pleasant, and Bob Gregory spoke to the media Friday night after the Washington Huskies lost 40-13 to the Washington State Cougars in the 113th Apple Cup. The result was the most lopsided score in favor of the Cougars in the history of the rivalry.
The Dawgman.com interns - Jack McCauley and Emeritus Luke Mounger - were joined this week by our new intern, Matthew Fredericksen, and the three got straight to the action of breaking down what they expect to see Friday during the 113th Apple Cup. This is a packed podcast, so don't miss out!
Starting with the offensive side of the ball, Jack offers a thorough rundown on who makes the Washington State offense tick, starting with quarterback Jayden de Laura. The discussion then moved on to a comparison between what WSU runs now (Run and Shoot) and what they used to run under former Head Coach Mike Leach (Air Raid). Both are primarily passing offenses, but how are they the same? How do they differ?
Moving to the other side of the ball, Luke breaks down the Washington State defense and the players that make it go. Are there some areas that Washington can exploit when their offense is on the field? And how much do they expect to see Sam Huard compared to starting quarterback Dylan Morris?
Matt gives his three keys for a Washington win, and also chips in with Jack and Luke to offer confidence levels on a UW victory.
And finally, who do they think will become Washington's next head coach?

Fuller spoke to the media Monday night after the Huskies defeated the George Mason Patriots 77-74 in game 1 of the Mammoth Sports Construction Crossover Classic in Sioux Falls, SD. They'll play South Dakota State Tuesday night and Nevada Wednesday afternoon.
If Jimmy Lake was around, he'd be all over the gamesmanship that comes with an Apple Cup. So who knows if Bob Gregory simply felt he needed to do his part to keep that aspect of the rivalry alive, but he certainly played his part Monday in the only media availability before the Huskies and Cougars tangle in the 113th playing of the game.
Here is the full audio from the media session, where Gregory was unwilling to give any injury updates, as he said he would after the Colorado loss, as well as how Sam Huard might be used, what he expects to see from the Cougars, motivation despite not being bowl eligible, and more.
No doubt Lake would have been proud of how Gregory handled this media session ahead of the game.
The Washington Men's Basketball team is in Sioux Falls, SD for the Mammoth Sports Construction Crossover Classic the next three days, and UW Head Coach Mike Hopkins knows it's opportunities like holiday tournaments where teams can really bond and get to know each other. With a Washington team trying to fit so many new players in during a short span of time, these tournaments can lay a crucial foundation for the rest of the season.
The Huskies play George Mason at 6:30 pm Monday night, South Dakota State at 6:30 Tuesday night, and Nevada at 4 pm Wednesday afternoon. All times are Pacific. The games can be seen via ESPN+.
