The CBC Gem Streaming App is debuting a new documentary, "Warrior Fathers," and one of the stories it follows is Thomas Snow (Watha Widu) from Morley, just outside Calgary, on a couple of his paths. The first, as a young father working to raise his children with a great sense of their Nakoda heritage with the second being an athlete, training to get into the boxing ring. Thomas Snow joined Russell Bowers in the Daybreak studio to chat about how this documentary came to be.

For forty years, the McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association has been reaching out to vulenerable people and families to offer programs and hope. By providing education, respect and empathy, their clients have improved and repaired their own lives. In some cases, those families end up helping others as well. On October 11, the McMan Association will hold it's Fall Luncheon fundraiser. The goal is the raise funds and awareness for future programs. Charity Redgun is one of the people who's been helped by McMan and Tenchoe Dorgee is their fund development officer. They both spoke with Russell.

For 15 years, the duo of Ian and Sylvia Tyson dominated the folk and pop scene. They each wrote some of the best-loved songs of the era and collaborated with Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Johnny Cash, and more. Although the duo and their marriage broke up in 1975, they have remained part of the consciousness of music history. Nearly 40 years after last performances, Stony Plain Records have uncovered some forgotten recordings. "The Lost Tapes: Ian & Sylvia," is now in shops as a double CD and LP. Ian Tyson sat down with Russell Bowers to play some of the tracks from the album, and catch up on his current life and music.

In 2019, the Calgary International Folk Festival celebrated 40 years bringing together music fans with groups and bands and legends at the Prince's Island stage. To mark the milestone, the folk fest asked artists from Alberta to head into the National Music Centre in Calgary and record new versions of songs that have been popular with festival goers, and originally recorded by the acts who headlined. The result is a double CD and double-disc vinyl album called "Cover Art." It gets it's formal launch at Festival Hall in Calgary on September 13 however ahead of the show, Russell got an exclusive preview of tracks from the record. He was joined by producer, Graham Lessard, musician Mariel Buckley - and they kicked off the listening session with a Talking Heads cover, "Heaven."

Back to school time for over five million students heading back to classes means the air will be filled with knowledge, but research has also revealed the air may also be filled with odors and many of them are not pleasant. You might think that the students lack of hygiene may be to blame but there's more to the story. To tell us more about the research behind the stink, Jason Tetro, an Edmonton microbiologist and author of The Germ Files, joined Russell.
