No matter what side of the political argument you view, the Liberal election campaign of 2019 has not been smooth. The party has faced all the criticisms you'd expect to hear about an incumbent government. And then there is the personal reputation of Justin Trudeau. Re-election didn't look to be a slam dunk at the start of the campaign but when photos emerged of Trudeau wearing brownface and blackface at parties in his youth, an uphill battle took on Sysyphean proportions. A new book looks at the promise of Justin Trudeau and what he terms a broken pact of trust with progressives. Martin Lukacs is the author of "The Trudeau Formula: Seduction and betrayal in an age of discontent." Lukacs is an investigative journalist who has covered Canadian politics for more than a decade as an environmental writer for The Guardian, and he was a co-author of the 2015 Leap Manifesto, written following a two-day meeting attended by representatives from Canada's Indigenous rights, advocates for social and food justice, as well as environmental, faith-based, and labour movements. Martin Lukacs spoke with Russell Bowers in the Daybreak studio.

Loneliness has become more and more common even though it might seem that our world has become more connected electronically. People around the world, in all age groups, often feel isolated. Alberta filmmaker Brandy Yanchyk explores this phenomenon in her new documentary, "Breaking Loneliness" which is now available to watch on the CBC Gem streaming app.

For over two decades, Gail Hall was a fixture of the food scene in Edmonton and Japser. The event, Christmas In November, became synonymous with her and was the highlight of the year at the Jasper Park Lodge. She also became familiar to anyone who watched TV or listened on the radio as she championed the Edmonton food scene and local producers. Hall died in 2016 from cancer and her life and passions are being celebrated in a new book. Broadcaster, chef, and friend of Gail's, Twyla Campbell spearheaded the cookbook called "Maps, Markets and Matzo Ball Soup." It collects favourite recipes, business advice and also serves as a biography for Gail Hall's life and work. Author Twyla Campbell and Gail's husband, Jon Hall, joined Russell Bowers on Daybreak to look back on Chef Gail Hall's remarkable legacy.

Writer, Angie Abdou (The Bone Cage, Home Ice) drops in to Daybreak to review new books from Alberta writers or about Alberta. This month, she joins Russell to discuss a memoir from Carys Cragg called "Dead Reckoning." It's a very personal book about her correspondence with the man who murdered her father.

A new musical, "No Change In The Weather" has been running in Calgary and starting at Edmonton's Westbury Theatre on Wednesay night, September 25. Now, most people are familiar with the musical "Come From Away," which celebrates the people of Newfoundland and their hospitality to stranded 9/11 passengers.This new musical touring Alberta celebrates the rich culture, history and music of the province and two of the people on stage joined Russell in the Daybreak studio.
