A comedy as black as it is bright. "Bloodsongs" is the story of a vampire-like figure who is cursed to seek out blood. With her heritage in a fictional Eastern European country, she brings her life and accordion to the stage to discover healing and self-acceptance. The Duchess Bake Shop is on the must-visit list for people heading to or in Edmonton as it's become famous for classic french pastries, along with Alberta favourites, like brownies and butter tarts. Owner Giselle Courteau is a self taught baker who opened the shop ten years ago and she now employs more than 60 people, she's busy opening a second location, and is launching a new cookbook called "Duchess at Home." She will be launching the book on Wednesday October 16, at her Duchess Bake Shop in Edmonton and she'll be at CookBooks & Company on Sunday, October 20 in Calgary. "Corridor Nine" [Thistledown Press] is a debut novel from Sophie Stocking and it's a story concerning a woman named Bernadette who did everything she could to cut ties to her father Fabian, his opiate addiction, and increasingly bizarre behaviour. However, following his suicide, Bernadette finds herself tethered to him even more tightly. The novel has been called "blackly comic and hilariously revelatory." Sophie Stocking will be appearing at Audrey's Books in Edmonton on Thursday October 17 and ahead of that, she joined Russell in the Daybreak studio.
