October 18, 201920 Years of Airing Out Dirty LaundryOver the years, the show, Dirty Laundry has been a completely live and improvised weekly Soap Opera and this year, they are celebrating their 20th year of performing in Calgary. Dirty Laundry also started a mentorship program with some of the city’s young and most promising improvisers called “Dirty Laundry: The Next Generation.” The upcoming 20th season starts on Monday, October 21 at Lunchbox Theatre, and the soap opera is set this year at the fictional Camp Tang and Camp Tastic. October 18, 2019The Power Play To Get New Arenas BuiltWhen the Rogers Place arena opened in downtown Edmonton in September 2016, it was with some fanfare and spectacle, however, in the years leading up the opening, rumours of manipulation, secret deals, and corporate greed surrounded the project. A new book called "Power Play: Professional Hockey and the Politics of Urban Development" tells a dramatic story about clashing priorities where sports, money, and municipal power meet. The three co-authors present an account of the machinations that got the arena and the adjacent Ice District built, with a price tag of more than $600 million. Jay Scherer is Professor of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation and together with co-authors, David Mills (former History professor at the UofA) and Linda Sloan McCulloch (former Edmonton city councillor) have put together this new account. October 18, 2019Tip-toeing Through the Classic Tale of FrankensteinOctober 23 in Calgary, Alberta Ballet will invite audiences to their take on one of the most classic horror tales of all time, the story of Frankenstein, as written by Mary Shelley. The story has become indelibly stamped in the popular consciousness. In two centuries of the tale existing, many different creators have tried to tell and re-tell the story of man and science gone afoul. Alberta Ballet now takes its turn under choreographer, Jean Grand-Maitre, with his previous projects for the company including some of the most internationally acclaimed projects the Ballet has ever undertaken, incorporating the work of k.d. lang, Elton John, and Joni Mitchell. Frankenstein runs in Calgary Oct 23 - 26 at the Jubilee Auditorium and then switches to Edmonton's Jubilee Auditorium for a run from Halloween night to November 2.
