Today we consider God as Elohiym, a God of power and might. In the book of John, we learn ‘Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.’ Such a singular and complete statement. All that exists was made by God. Light, life, love, our world, and the universe. In His was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. Light is life - the essence of us and of God. Come and listen to the truth about Elohiym, our great God above all gods.

God's concern for how we treat each other is clear: look after orphans and widows, defend the rights of the poor and needy. He invites us to join Him in caring for and about others in ways that can change lives and bring justice. Father, would you open our eyes to the injustice in our towns, in our neighborhoods? Would you give us the courage to speak up and speak out that people would be free indeed?

There is perhaps only one way to live in a place of inner peace. We try to impagine it as silence and solitude. God says it is His peace that transcends all understanding. It is beyond comprehension, yet it exists in our relationship with Jesus. Our surrender is to Him, not to nothingness. It is by keeping our thoughts on what is true and real – on Him, that we find true rest and a peace-filled life. It is the Lord of Peace who has already given us peace. Trust Him.

Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! (Amos 5:24). What a contrast to the image we tend to attribute to justice – a scale with weights hanging in balance. God’s words ring clear throughout the Scriptures – do right, defend the oppressed, give to the poor. Justice and right-living go hand-in-hand.

There is a unique and powerful dynamic at work in God's kingdom. It appears to operate in tandem to our behavior and thoughts. If we forgive, we are forgiven. Conversely, if we don't forgive, neither are we forgiven. Our nature is to hold judgement over another, yet we then are judged. To reconcile is to bring freedom, to return the scale to a place of equilibrium. There's only one way - to let go and keep no records of wrong.

Psalms 89:14 (NIV) says, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; love and faithfulness go before you.” God’s justice is based on truth. Our hearts envy and stubbornly hold onto ‘our rights’. This divides our hearts and prevents us from grasping the truth that God’s love for all of us is the same and is deeper than we know. Should we not also let His love deepen ours for another person?

This scriptural meditation reminds us that doing good for others is a creative act of love. God will refresh us and empower us, if we embrace His desires, His will and His heart to help and take care of others in need.

Scripture tells us: Don’t repay evil for evil. Share in others’ sorrows. Do what is just and right. Might living with and in humility help us form the attitude of not seeking our own good, but another’s? To be like Jesus, is to take these words seriously, choose to love, choose to forgive, choose to do the right thing – every time.

When we have pure hearts, we can see truth, life and love. It is God's desire that our choices are for the goodness of others, to store up love that will flow like a river from our lips, refreshing our families, our friends and whomever we meet. All are thirsty. Everyone needs to be loved, to belong, to know they matter – to someone. God, would you open our hearts to love as You do?

It's pretty simple, really. God says, your work is to do good. God has asked us to join Him in loving others, being gentle and kind, forgiving as we have been forgiven, sharing what we have and blessing with the gentle rains of peace. For this, we will be called His people. What an honor.
