  • Is Timothy Hunter the DC Comics Harry Potter?
With J.K. Rowling's Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them set to be released worldwide next week, we have decided to take a look at a specific magical character from DC Comics history.

On the surface, Timothy Hunter might just look like an imitation of Harry Potter, but Hunter was actually created 7 years before Potter. Hunter obviously has never gained the fame in pop culture that Potter has. While the characters have many striking surface-level similarities to each other, the stories they are in are much different.

    Similarities to Harry Potter

Physical appearance - both characters are thin with dark hair and glasses
Timothy Hunter is 12 years old in the beginning of his story, Harry Potter was 11
Both characters were raised in England
Both characters have a great destiny in the magical world
Both characters learn the history of magic through a tour of the magical world
Both characters have a loyal pet owl
Other magical beings are seen throughout- Trolls, Basilisk
Timothy Hunter was created in 1990 by Neil Gaiman and John Bolton, Harry Potter was officially created in 1997 by J.K. Rowling

The Books of Magic by Neil Gaiman (1990 4 issue mini-series) summary - some spoilers

Opens with 4 people discussing what to do with Timothy Hunter

    Dr. Occult
    Constantine
    Mister E.
    Phantom Stranger

They take Timothy on a tour of time/magic to see if he is interested
He meets some of the most famous magical characters in the DC/Vertigo universe

    Dr. Fate
    John Zatara
    Zatanna Zatara
    Sargon The Sorcerer

Constantine takes Timothy to New York City to see Madame Xanadu

She reads his cards, predicting his future

Then Tim gets to meet to Corrigan/ The Spectre

Their Taxi Driver tries to Kill Timothy

Dr. Fate shows up to warn them
    Show up at Baron Winter’s

    Jason Blood is there

    Then to Zatanna’s
Boston Brand (Deadman) keeps popping up with something important to tell Tim
Zatanna takes him to nightclub on Halloween, they meet some more people

    Tala - Queen of Evil
    Tannarak
    Felix Faust
    The Wizard

The people start to attack Timothy - their is a price on his head

Constantine shows up to protect him

    * Timothy is shown the potential future of the universe and has to choose if he wants to "know" magic

Post The Books of Magic career

DC Comics then began to play off of Harry Potter comparisons - even releasing a 6 book series of young adult novels
Tim Hunter has had small roles in comics in recent years
Tim Hunter briefly appeared in New 52 Justice League Dark comic book
Would you like to see The Books of Magic as a live-action movie?

With today being Election Day 2016 in the United States, we are coming at you with a special edition of the podcast. We'll be discussing 5 DC Comics characters that ran for President ina comic book.

Tons of DC characters have been United States President in elseworlds stories, such as an alternate Superman named Calvin Ellis. We'll be sticking with more mainstream stories, though, for the most part.

Politics is a big topic on DC TV these days, with Oliver Queen currently Star City's Mayor in Arrow and Penguin currently being the Mayor on Gotham. We are going to stick with presidential elections, though. These names come from a list compiled by Brian Cronin of Comic Book Resources.

Prez - The First Teen President

    * Multiple Iterations focusing on teenagers
    * Prez: First Teen President (1973) - original run was 4 issues
    * Prez Rickard - His mom named him Prez in hopes he would become a U.S. President some day
    * Constitutional amendment to lower age for Presidential candidates
    * He named his Mother Vice President and his Sister secretary
    * In June 2015, a new Prez comic was started. It had Beth Ross elected by Twitter in 2036

    Robert Redford in Watchmen

    * He was planning to run in 1988, which would have been Nixon’s 6th term
    * Ronald Reagan was used in the 2009 film instead of Redford

    Etrigan the Demon

    * He first ran as a joke, but he quickly gained a following
    * His canidacy only ended by turning back into Jason Blood

    Arcadia Alvarado

    * Appeared in Vertigo Comics’ Saucer County (2012-2013)
    * Alvarado was Governor of New Mexico and running for president
    * She thinks she was abducted by Aliens and want to expose them

    Lex Luthor

    * Comic book storyline beginning in 2000
    * Pete Ross as vice president
    * Presidency ended poorly by trying to destroy Superman
    * Touched on in Smallville
    * Alternate reality Justice League and Justice League Unlimited

This trailer doesn't have too much new footage
There is a Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice reference
The film will be released in theaters on February 10, 2017
The movie stars Will Arnett as Bruce Wayne/Batmn, Michael Cera as Robin, Zach Galifianakis as Joker, Jenny Slate as Harley Quinn, and Ralph Fiennes as Alfred Pennyworth

04:55 Sandman movie loses another Screenwriter - io9

    * Eric Heisserer was attached to write the movie, but has left the project.
    * "I had many conversations with Neil [Gaiman] on this, and I did a lot of work on the feature and came to the conclusion that the best version of this property exists as an HBO series or limited series, not as a feature film, not even as a trilogy. The structure of the feature film really doesn’t mesh with this. So I went back and said here’s the work that I’ve done. This isn’t where it should be. It needs to go to TV. So I talked myself out of a job!" - Eric Heisserer
    * Sandman has been in development as a New Line Cinema property
    * Been in some form of development as a TV series or feature film since the 1990s
    * Joseph Gordon-Levitt had previously been attached to produce, as well as potentially direct and star

04:34 Arrow Casts Talia al Ghul - TVLine

Lexa Doig will be taking the role
She’s had roles in a lot of SyFy shows - Andromeda, Continuum, Stargate SG-1 and The 4400
Described as worldly and cultured, Talia is “an elite warrior who doesn’t pick sides but rather creates her own.”
Will first appear in Episode 10 of Season 5

  • Wonder Woman trailer 2 reaction!
The new Wonder Woman trailer is officially here! Tom and Zac are here to break it down with their thoughts and reactions to the 2 minutes and 30 seconds of new footage that we got.

“I used to want to save the world, this beautiful place, but the closer you get, the more you see the great darkness within. I learned this the hard way, a long, long time ago.” - Diana Prince

In the new footage we get to see more of Themyscira and plenty more of Gal Gadot in action as Wonder Woman. We also get more hints to the plot as well as who the potential villain(s) are. There are more visuals of the horrific Great War/ World War I scenes as well as more Steve Trevor and Etta Candy.

After the epic first trailer from San Diego Comic-Con, how does this one stack up? Does this increase our hype levels for the film or not? This trailer also brought up more questions about the film and who the characters might be playing?

    * Is Danny Huston playing Ares, god of war?
    * Is Elena Anaya playing Dr. Poison?
    * What character could David Thewlis be playing?
    * What hints to the story did we get from the footage?
    * How do the visuals of Paradise Island compare with that of World War I?

The Wonder Woman film is now less than 7 months away. The movie stars Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Connie Nielson as Queen Hippolyta, Robin Wright as General Antiope, and Lucy Davis as Etta Candy. Directed by Patty Jenkins, it officially hits theaters on June 2, 2017.

What did you think of the trailer? Did it live up to your hype levels? Let us know on Twitter. Thanks for listening and be sure to subscribe to never miss a new episode.

  • Pitching New Gods and Adam Strange movies

What unannounced DC Comics film would you like to see added to the slate? That is the question we were asked from Steve. So, in today's episode, Zac pitches an Adam Strange movie, while Tom pitches a New Gods film.

We also discuss the potential of a new Swamp Thing franchise, The Books of Magic, Justice Society of America, and whether Green Arrow Supemax should be revived.

    01:32 Secondary movie choices

04:05 Zac - Adam Strange movie

Normal human archaeologist, one day gets transported to the planet Rann by a Zeta-Beam. They give him a jetpack and ray gun and he becomes their superhero (he has no actual powers). It’s could be a reverse Superman sort of origin story.
Rann’s leader Sardath invented the Zeta-Beam - his daughter Alanna is Stange’s love interest.
The transportation effects wear off periodically, and he gets put back on Earth, but he has been told the schedule of beams by Sardath, and can get back (but doesn’t control when) - good plot device for films
Adam Strange debuted in Showcase #17 (Nov. 1958) - created by Julius Schwartz

Schwartz was a science major - wanted this to be somewhat “scientifically accurate”

Could also play out Rann-Thangar war as final thing

Thangar is the home of Hawkman (all Hawkpeople) - could be cool to see him in movie

    10:55 Tom - Fourth World/New Gods movie

Jack Kirby Created the Fourth World saga in 1971
4 comic book titles created the Fourth World - New Gods, Mister Miracle, Forever People, and Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen
Characters to feature from - New Genesis (Highfather, Orion, Lightray) and Apokolips (Darkseid, Steppenwolf, Kalibak, Granny Goodness)
Metron (seeks knowledge, Mobius chair) Mister Miracle and Big Barda
Connections to DCEU - Earth 2, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Knightmare scene, Justice League opening
    Potential space epic trilogy
Directors - George Miller, Peter Jackson, or anyone capable of creating a new planet.
