You’ve been walking for blocks, your stomach hollow. Then you catch it, the perfume of fried chicken drifting from just ahead, warm and unmistakable.The Pickrick, a sign reads, and you quicken your pace.

As you approach, you see a man through the window, gesturing urgently. Faces crowd around him, rapt. The Pickrick door swings open as a customer steps out, her glare stopping you cold. 

The man’s voice carries onto the street through the open door, “...I will NEVER serve anyone other than white folks! I would rather close the Pickrick than let that happen!” 

The room erupts in hollers and applause before the faces turn from the man, to the window, and your dark hand frozen above the door handle just beyond. Their smiles curdle.

You back away slowly. Away from the restaurant. Away from the danger inside. Away from the man holding court at the center of it all: the owner of the Pickrick, and the soon-to-be 75th governor of Georgia.

It’s 1914 and your 12-year-old legs  are carrying you down the street past house after house in Cabbagetown as fast as they can to get to the mill on time. You round the last corner before the mill and run straight into the back of a man standing stock still and staring straight ahead. You bend over trying to catch your breath while your eyes squint up and follow his—workers are flowing out of the mill, instead of into it. That’s when you hear the whispers swirling around you. From lips to ear it grows louder until the man turns around calling out what he just heard to the crowd now gathered behind him, “Strike!”
