The fame, the publicity, the rumors make this song a perfect representation of the love hurdles that our couple has to face in The Cheat Sheet. Happy Place has little something for everyone: an intense soulmates, second chance love trope, a story of friendships and growing up, a melancholy feeling of losing someone that was once your everything, and that only breaks the surface of what this book is about. What we thought was going to be a fun, fluffy romance turned out to be gut wrenching, desperate and heartbreaking. It makes you laugh, cry and curse every other page. It bounces between the “Happy Place” and “Real Life” chapters which brings the entire book full circle. 

This book is a combination of every emotion and every era combined. The Archer from Lover, Right Where You Left Me from Evermore, This Is Me Trying from Folklore - all songs that almost got a full feature in this episode. In it’s entirety, this book is Midnights with Wyn being the sunshine and Harriet being Midnight Rain (another honorable mention song). When asked what song on the Midnights album this book fit best with, Emily Henry said Maroon. Once you hear it, you can’t unhear it.

This episode is part three of three in the Summer I Turned Pretty series and probably the most controversial ending to be discussed. By this point in the series, we’ve all taken sides - Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah. You made it through the first two books and you have to complete the series regardless of how you feel. So in the end, you’re either let down and hate them entirely OR you’re happy with the ending and this book remains one of your favorites of all time. As much as we hate to admit it, we fall into the latter category. 

We ended the second book with Conrad and Belly on the outs and now Jeremiah being thrown into the love triangle (which let’s be honest we all saw that coming). We finally get a glimpse into what the “Jelly” relationship would look like. It’s fun, lighthearted & adorable… until it’s not. Their relationship is put through the ringer and it’s unclear what the future looks like for Belly and the Fisher boys. In the end, love comes out on top. In this episode, we honor Taylor Swift’s first re-recorded song from the 1989 album which is also featured in the PrimeVideo TV series of The Summer I Turned Pretty. It’s the best song to wrap up this trilogy. Here’s to This Love.

This episode is part two of three in the Summer I Turned Pretty series. If you haven’t listened to episode 7, it is highly recommended before listening to this episode. At first read, this entire series is super cheesy and childish. It’s Not Summer Without You is honestly really annoying at times. Sure it’s not for everyone. For book lovers out there like us that see this series for more than a YA novel, there is still so much that it has to offer. You either love this series or you hate it, and you already know we love it.

We left off with our two favorite love birds finally confessing their feelings for each other. We pick up book 2 continuing to follow the love story between Belly and the Fisher boys but there’s some more plot twists and sub plots that we get along the way.  The story continues about not only love, but also loss, growth & family. We get to hear from dual POV’s and see characters deal with things that are out of their control. That’s why the song featured in this episode isn’t a clear love song - it’s a really sad song, apologetic and regretful that deserves a lot more appreciation. It’s called Coney Island from the Evermore album but ironically enough it’s not about an amusement park. I guess you’re just gonna have to listen to the episode to understand this beautiful metaphor.

A majority of the story is told in present time by Belly, with alternating flashbacks to Belly’s childhood and her summer life growing up with the Fisher boys. This book is represented by a song from Taylor’s Debut album because they are both underrated but so so good and meaningful to their original fans. The song itself, I’d Lie, is an ode to our one and only, Belly Conklin.

Forget beach reads, we want lake reads. Currently planning our next trip to Canada to live out our Carley Fortune dreams, especially after finishing her second novel, Meet Me at the Lake. Told in our favorite style of alternating timelines, this book is a love story of how one single day turned strangers into lovers. Will & Fernie work through the aftermath of their meeting 10 years later, only to find that their attraction to each other is stronger than ever. In this episode, we talk about love & heartbreak, but also, personal challenges, growth and mental health awareness. We love a good romance but we love a powerful message more and there is such a sweet one hidden in this book. 

If you haven’t listened to episode 3, you might want to do that first because we are revisiting Every Summer After to discuss how Carley Fortune has evolved as an author. She is so captivating, and makes you feel every single moment and emotion she is writing in her books. It’s truly magical. Or should we say enchanting? It was pretty quickly into this book that we knew that the song for this episode was going to be Enchanted from the Speak Now era, and when we heard the announcement of Taylor’s Version (coming July 7th) the same day we finished Meet Me at the Lake, we had too much to say about it. Now entering the Rep era of Death by a Thousand Books podcast. Four episodes of fun, light hearted romance novels - now here we are giving you our take on an incredibly dark & twisted book called Verity by Colleen Hoover. It’s a perfect example of how there’s a Taylor Swift song for any book you throw in our direction. You’d think it’d be hard to find a song for a murder/mystery/thriller but there is a touch of romance in this book that fits in between the lines. If you haven’t read this book yet, make sure you don’t have plans the next day because you will stay up until 2am finishing it. 

This book is suspenseful, creepy and highly questionable. There are two sides to every story and in Verity, we are left in the end extremely confused. The writing comes off very surface level and one sided at times so we want to have an open mind when talking about all the different theories behind the climax. In this episode, we take a look into who we think Verity truly is as a character and who the real villain is in this story. Oh and let’s not forget to discuss the damn manuscript. So much to get into this episode but Don’t Blame Me… blame Colleen Hoover.

Okay lovers, this one is for you.💗Booktok made us read this one, and we are pretty damn glad they did. It’s always hard jumping into a book from booktok or bookstagram because the expectation is already set so high by so many other people. Icebreaker by Hannah Grace may have set a new high standard for romance novels in our world. Reading this book felt like listening to Lover (the album) for the first time - fun, romantic, adorable, peaceful.  Nate & Stassie are a couple that came together so naturally, and we loved the way their story was told. The book is written from a dual POV so we get to see their individuality as characters while seeing them fall in love simultaneously. Bonus trope: side characters!! Lola, Henry, JJ - every character in this book has their own little storyline.

You already know Lover is our favorite album, and Lover is our favorite song. Which brings us full circle back to this episode. We knew it had to be something special - sooooo, since we have a love story told from both Nate & Anastasia’s perspective, we chose a twist on our favorite song that does the same thing. Continuing on the trend of our favorite Taylor Swift exes, this one’s for our Taylor Lautner girlies. If you dated Taylor Swift in her peak pop country years, you knew it was almost guaranteed she wrote a song about you. However, how you treated her in that relationship determined what kind of song you got in return. The song featured in this episode is an apology to a former lover, something that she has never done before. Despite the speculation, it was confirmed years later to be about our favorite werewolf boy.  "Guys get what they deserve in my songs, and if they deserve an apology, they should get one.” -Taylor Swift. For such a light, summer-y themed book, it may seem a little weird but we’re going to take a trip Back to December. 

Carley Fourtune’s Every Summer After features the same kind of Love & Other Words friendship plotline with a taste of second chance romance. Love is messy, and so are the good read reviews of this book, which brings us to a very controversial episode of really breaking down the contents of the relationship between Sam and Percy. Who’s your favorite Taylor Swift ex to hate? If the answer is John Mayer, you’re correct. However, if the answer is Jake Gylenhaal, then we have a book for you. This is the first book from Colleen Hoover’s collection that is up for discussion but it will certainly not be the last time you hear her name on this podcast. She has always said that It Ends with Us holds a special place in her heart. You can tell that it’s a personal story and because of that, it has a powerful message behind it. Ryle Kincaid is the Jake Gylenhaal of the Taylor Swift world: charismatic, lovable, but exposed for the poor decisions he made and the terrible truth behind him as a man. 

Contrary to what you may be thinking, this episode isn’t about All Too Well but it is from the Red era. It’s about the journey through the different colors and emotions of what it feels like to have and lose someone. The sad blues, the lonely grays, and the burning reds. It captures the overall feeling of this whirlwind of love and makes it perfect to compare to It Ends with Us in this episode. 

It Ends with Us went viral on TikTok in 2021 and quickly became the book of the summer, which was unheard of given that it was published in 2016. Selling less than twenty-thousand copies in its first year of publication, it now has an estimated number of over 500-thousand sold copies.  Check out the book summary written below:
