Death by a Thousand Books

If asked to choose between the Death by a Thousands Cuts bridge OR the Cruel Summer bridge, which one do you choose? We think the better question is: how do you choose? These are the kind of thoughts we have going into this episode. If DBATB had to pick it’s favorite era, Lover would steal the entire show (the name of this podcast is literally inspired by this album). We knew it was the first album we wanted to talk about in these new episodes because it was the first album to be fully owned Taylor Swift.

From being released in 2019 to Cruel Summer becoming a radio single in 2023, Lover is an era that is known for it’s cozy, pastel, romantic aesthetic (and also it’s poppy, upbeat songs). The jump from the Reputation era to Lover is truly like night & day. She hid from the outside world for years, had to defend herself for lies, and ultimately had her music stolen. She came back from that downfall with an album that you could tell she was proud of, that she truly put her entire heart into, and put out the music that she truly wanted to.  She spoke out about things that mattered to her. She wrote about the things that happen in the real word. She went from an artist to an activist. Her music has always been relatable to girls with boy drama, but in this era, her music packs a powerful message (while also being relatable to girls with boy drama).  In this episode, we are breaking down music videos, easter eggs & revealing our top 5 favorite songs from the album.

Back in our Midnights era as we talk about Adam & Olive’s love story - our new favorite grumpy x sunshine couple!!! We are in our fake dating era lately and Hazelwood is the mastermind behind the trope. Calling all nerds to tune in on this episode.🤓 Leave it to us to somehow tie neuroscience with the Reputation era. This episode is going to be a very interesting one. Love on The Brain is extremely nerdy but if we can still follow the story, then so can you. It’s your typical enemies to lovers plotline with copious amounts of scientific terminology and a bonus trope: cats. It’s giving girl boss & male wife energy. Bee Königswasser is such a quirky main character and Levi will melt your heart faster than an ice cream cone on a hot summer day. I mean just look at the cover - it’s Gorgeous!

Ali Hazelwood is a neuroscience professor by day and a romance author by night. She’s another name that you’ll hear pop up in this podcast again and again. Women in STEM is a common theme around her stories. Her debut novel, The Love Hypothesis, was a New York Times best seller (which we are featuring as the June book of the month and talk about in episode 12) Her third book - Love, Theoretically - is OUT NOW so you already know we’ll be talking about it in episode 14😉

Wowowowow, if there were ever a moment for an emergency episode…it’s right now🤯 We just have to talk about the season 2 trailer for The Summer I Turned Pretty immediately. So many clips, so many emotions, so many thoughts!!! From the opening hairshake, the infinity necklace, the tears - this trailer did not disappoint. We watched the entire thing about fifty times in 0.5 speed so that we could recap and talk about every little detail.

You know how much we love TSITP on this podcast, and we look for any reason to talk about it more. In this episode, we breakdown the trailer, discuss our thoughts on season 2 and predict what other songs Jenny Hann is going to break our hearts with this summer.

With that being said, there is a lot for us to say reading it as 25 year olds - but don’t let that deter you from reading it💚

In this episode, we are turning Bree & Nathan’s relationship into the wild love story of Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince. The fame, the publicity, the rumors make this song a perfect representation of the love hurdles that our couple has to face in The Cheat Sheet. The sports plot line was a fun one to throw into the mix.  For all the NFL girlies out there, Nathan is giving Justin Herbert vibes, and we LOVE a humble, lovable quarterback🥵

Happy Place has little something for everyone: an intense soulmates, second chance love trope, a story of friendships and growing up, a melancholy feeling of losing someone that was once your everything, and that only breaks the surface of what this book is about. What we thought was going to be a fun, fluffy romance turned out to be gut wrenching, desperate and heartbreaking. It makes you laugh, cry and curse every other page. It bounces between the “Happy Place” and “Real Life” chapters which brings the entire book full circle. 

This book is a combination of every emotion and every era combined. The Archer from Lover, Right Where You Left Me from Evermore, This Is Me Trying from Folklore - all songs that almost got a full feature in this episode. In it’s entirety, this book is Midnights with Wyn being the sunshine and Harriet being Midnight Rain (another honorable mention song). When asked what song on the Midnights album this book fit best with, Emily Henry said Maroon. Once you hear it, you can’t unhear it.

This episode is part three of three in the Summer I Turned Pretty series and probably the most controversial ending to be discussed. By this point in the series, we’ve all taken sides - Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah. You made it through the first two books and you have to complete the series regardless of how you feel. So in the end, you’re either let down and hate them entirely OR you’re happy with the ending and this book remains one of your favorites of all time. As much as we hate to admit it, we fall into the latter category. 

We ended the second book with Conrad and Belly on the outs and now Jeremiah being thrown into the love triangle (which let’s be honest we all saw that coming). We finally get a glimpse into what the “Jelly” relationship would look like. It’s fun, lighthearted & adorable… until it’s not. Their relationship is put through the ringer and it’s unclear what the future looks like for Belly and the Fisher boys. In the end, love comes out on top. In this episode, we honor Taylor Swift’s first re-recorded song from the 1989 album which is also featured in the PrimeVideo TV series of The Summer I Turned Pretty. It’s the best song to wrap up this trilogy. Here’s to This Love.

This episode is part two of three in the Summer I Turned Pretty series. If you haven’t listened to episode 7, it is highly recommended before listening to this episode. At first read, this entire series is super cheesy and childish. It’s Not Summer Without You is honestly really annoying at times. Sure it’s not for everyone. For book lovers out there like us that see this series for more than a YA novel, there is still so much that it has to offer. You either love this series or you hate it, and you already know we love it.

We left off with our two favorite love birds finally confessing their feelings for each other. We pick up book 2 continuing to follow the love story between Belly and the Fisher boys but there’s some more plot twists and sub plots that we get along the way.  The story continues about not only love, but also loss, growth & family. We get to hear from dual POV’s and see characters deal with things that are out of their control. That’s why the song featured in this episode isn’t a clear love song - it’s a really sad song, apologetic and regretful that deserves a lot more appreciation. It’s called Coney Island from the Evermore album but ironically enough it’s not about an amusement park. I guess you’re just gonna have to listen to the episode to understand this beautiful metaphor.

Whether you fell for the wildly charismatic best friend, Jeremiah or the stand-offish bad boy, Conrad, there are parts of this book that are relatable for us all. A majority of the story is told in present time by Belly, with alternating flashbacks to Belly’s childhood and her summer life growing up with the Fisher boys. This book is represented by a song from Taylor’s Debut album because they are both underrated but so so good and meaningful to their original fans. The song itself, I’d Lie, is an ode to our one and only, Belly Conklin.

Forget beach reads, we want lake reads. Currently planning our next trip to Canada to live out our Carley Fortune dreams, especially after finishing her second novel, Meet Me at the Lake. Told in our favorite style of alternating timelines, this book is a love story of how one single day turned strangers into lovers. Will & Fernie work through the aftermath of their meeting 10 years later, only to find that their attraction to each other is stronger than ever. In this episode, we talk about love & heartbreak, but also, personal challenges, growth and mental health awareness. We love a good romance but we love a powerful message more and there is such a sweet one hidden in this book. 

If you haven’t listened to episode 3, you might want to do that first because we are revisiting Every Summer After to discuss how Carley Fortune has evolved as an author. She is so captivating, and makes you feel every single moment and emotion she is writing in her books. It’s truly magical. Or should we say enchanting? It was pretty quickly into this book that we knew that the song for this episode was going to be Enchanted from the Speak Now era, and when we heard the announcement of Taylor’s Version (coming July 7th) the same day we finished Meet Me at the Lake, we had too much to say about it.
