Mark 14:10-21.

As Mark continues to move through the life of Jesus he has now fully turned our attention to the events leading up to the cross. He will deliver several snapshots of the King as He moves toward His crucifixion. Mark wants us to first of all see that Jesus is the King who is betrayed and sovereign.

Mark 14:1-9.

Prodigal. Not a word we often use but a word packed with meaning. It can mean extravagant, lavish, or unsparing. It's a word that not only describes King Jesus but also describes the woman in these verses as she goes full tilt in her worship of Jesus. Mark shows us that our prodigal King is worthy of prodigal worship.

Mark 13:24-37.

Fact: Jesus will return. As Jesus lands the plane on this vital teaching He drives this point home. But the undeniable return of Jesus isn't just for knowing, it's to have an ever present effect in how we live today. Because Jesus will return we are to stay alert and stay on task. The future return of Jesus is what fuels vigilant gospel proclamation.

Mark 13:1-23.

Deception. Persecution. Tribulation. These are realities that will mark the times leading up to the end of all things. But rather than spin out about future details, Jesus pastors His followers by calling them to be on guard in the present so that they are not led astray or anxious concerning the end of all things.

Mark 12:35-44.

Jesus isn't merely a Son of David, He is THE Son of David, the Messiah who is King David's Lord. Jesus asks one of the most poignant questions found in Mark's gospel so we can wrestle with the identity of who Jesus is.

Mark 12: 28-34.

Almost doesn't count. If this phrase could be applied to anyone in Mark's gospel it would be the scribe who comes to Jesus asking a question about God's commandments. The scribe proves that it's possible to be not far from the kingdom but not in the kingdom. Kingdom citizens are those men and women who are looking to Jesus alone for salvation.

Mark 12:18-27.

The parade of opposition continues. This time another religious group tries to trap Jesus in His words with a question about the resurrection of the dead. Jesus says they are wrong about the resurrection because of their failure to know the Scriptures and the power of God. God is not God of the dead. Our God is God of the living.

Mark 12:13-17.

Flattering lips and deceitful hearts. This is what the opposition bring to Jesus as they ask Him a question about taxes. Their aim is to force Jesus to publicly wrestle with the age old question, "What is our relationship to this world supposed to look like?" Jesus takes the opportunity to clarify that disciples have earthly allegiances, but are primarily kingdom citizens with an ultimate allegiance to the King.

Mark 12:1-12.

In the text we find Jesus speaking a parable that is gracious in it’s purpose while at the same time devastating in it’s truth. As the King unpacks how God the Father has dealt with His people, He is going to expose us to the kindness of God in His pursuit of sinners, and the severity of God for those who ultimately reject His Son.

Mark 11:27-33.

Looking at the religious leaders who refused to see Jesus as the Christ and follow Him as the King, Mark helps us to understand why it is that many people refuse to follow Jesus. But the good news of the gospel is that it's as we lose our life to this good King that we will save it.
