Being a parent has helped me heal from many traumatic events in my childhood. I had to really think about what I needed as a child and how I could do things differently. In this episode of Dem Bois Podcast, I share some of the verbal and physical abuse I faced, some of the things I didn’t want to repeat as a parent, and some things I did want to bring into the relationship with my child. Remember, you can’t help what your parents did to you, but you do have the power to heal from it. The generational trauma can stop with you!

I never really thought of myself as being courageous. I’ve done courageous things in the past, but it wasn’t until recently that I thought about the courage it took to stand in my truth and do what made me happy. Luckie Alexander is a trans advocate, father, grandfather, husband, and he is my brother from another mother. Luckie Alexander, the founder of Invisible Men, is a Transman who is an advocate, exacting change that builds bridges within the LGBTQI community and creates resources and support around transmasculine folks and trans parents. He is a member of Los Angeles County Transgender Advisory Council (TAC), CHIPTS CAB Member, HIV Commissioner and a proud member & Historian of the Brown Boi Project and was the Director of Workforce Development at Trans Can Work.  He received the title of Mr. Quest 2018, a community advocacy award with APAIT. He was the Assistant Strategy Director for the historic 2019 National Trans Visibility March and has received the Lou Sullivan Award for the work he does centered around transmasculine individuals in the HIV/AIDS arena. Currently Luckie is a Prevention Training Specialist for the Trans Wellness Program @ APLA.

Luckie has a passion for Gender and Social Justice and is very committed to giving back to the community through education, training, and awareness. He also provides healing by creating fun wherever he goes and teaching mixed media art & computer technology. His experience spans 18 years in capacities such as SGA Leadership in Utah, a homeless shelter program manager, Peer Mentor for homeless LGBTQI youth in Las Vegas Nv. and L. A. Ca. He has also done speaking engagements expressing his story of transmasculine experience and facilitated cultural humility training for LA homeless housing facilities. He also holds degrees in Computer Science, Math, and Culinary Arts and is currently working towards a BA in Psychology. Luckie is a dedicated member of the community and a father raising 4 children to be open minded free thinkers and lovers of gummy bears.

There were many moments in my transition journey that I didn’t plan but worked out in my favor. For example, transitioning at work wasn’t easy, but there was a sense of ease and a level of comfort. Before me, the company had never experienced someone transitioning, so I got the chance to educate them and feel empowered in the process. But, there were moments when I felt very uncomfortable and traumatized, and in this episode of Dem Bois Podcast, I talk about both the good and bad. Before my transition, I learned about masculinity from those around me. I had an idea in my head about what it meant to be a man - to be tough and take care of my family and be the breadwinner, but I was so wrong. After I transitioned, I had to unlearn what I knew and relearn that masculinity is different for everyone, and there are levels to it. We are also changing the industry by making sharps containers more unique, so the people who use them every day don’t feel so hospitalized. He started in 2017 from his room to create a way to become a part of the transgender community and help raise money for his own top surgery. Stealth Bros. and Co. continues to grow and serve the transgender and allied communities. He even offers a support fund for those in the LGBT community in need, and his company is a proud Certified LGBT Business Enterprise of NGLCC. By sharing his experiences, Braxton hopes to inspire other trans people on their journeys and fill a gap in the representation of trans people of color.

I was homeless for 2 and a half years. I didn’t have a job or money so I wasn’t eating regularly. I couldn’t wash my body or even comb my hair. All I could do was cry and hope for my life to get better. During that time I was embarrassed, ashamed and overwhelmed with emotion. And in this episode of Dem Bois Podcast, I finally share this story. I talk about what caused me to be homeless and what brought me out of it.
