Powerful governments were trying to fix economies by spending more and more money. They were trying to control the national economy by manipulating the interest rates. They had encouraged everybody into increasing levels of debt. They created inflation by issuing more money to pay for government debt. Rather than fixing economic problems then, they ended up ruining the worldwide economy.
