  • Type or Image, Which is More Important? – Episode 020

This week Brandi and Michelle talk about which came first, the image, or the type? And which one matters more…?

:50 Lesson of the day: Do NOT run before you have to talk into a microphone!
1:20 Michelle talks about her oh-so-interesting week. She saw a hawk. Is that cool?
5:00 Brandi’s week. She went to DALLAS for an AIGA retreat! This is actually cool.
6:00 Best retreat ever. She drank the Kool-Aid. Listen to her talk about it and you might also drink the kool-aid. No joke.
7:30 Justin Ahrens – Design for Good
    7:34  Women Lead Initiative
    8:00 Diversity & Inclusion Initiative
    9:26 In-House Initiative
    9:53 Scholarships & Design Plus
14:00 Brandi’s song this week is Bastille, “Blame”
16:02 Question time!!!! In a design, is the image or type supposed to be more important than the other?
17:30 It’s depends! Your image and type should have a symbiotic relationships!
18:20 Aesthetic Apparatus is a brilliant example of a symbiotic relationship.
    19:16 Keyword: Process!!!!
19:32 Example time. Justin Timberlake is the basis of said example. <3
21:23 Putting an image and type together is like putting a puzzle together.
22:25 You can tell what level a designer is at by how well their type goes with their design.

  • Guest Interview with [Web] Designer Tim Brown – Episode 019

This week Michelle and Brandi interview Web Designer, Podcaster, and Letterer Tim Brown. They talk about blue collar clients, and who’s inspiring Tim right now.

    Tim Brown’s info:
    Instagram: timishness
    Website: timbdesign.com
    Twitter: @timbdesignmpls
    Podcast: It’s A Code World
1:14 On this week’s episode we have Tim Brown, hailing all the way from Minneapolis, Minnesota!
1:43 How Brandi and Tim crossed paths: Through Sean Wes and Instagram hashtags (#minnetype).
2:01 The #minnetype challenge on Instagram shows us Tim’s progress from Day 1. This guy is incredible! Go check out his stuff from beginning to end and be inspired!
3:49 Patience plays a huge part in getting better at what you’re trying to be better at.
    4:00 Persistence pays off.
5:08 Putting pen to paper is therapeutic!!! DO IT.
6:00 Tim is primarily a web designer, and he also has his own podcast! Check it out!
8:46 It’s quicker (and more satisfying) to sketch on paper than it is to sketch from a sketch app.
9:15 How has he incorporated the #minnetype challenge into his work now?
9:41 It’s a loose interpretation. Some of the creative concepts, knowledge, and experience is used in his every day work now.
10:49 Typographical Contrast: A fancy font with a simple font… The contrast creates a type of interest. (This has to be some sort of psychological thing.)
11:00-12:00 Lots of Graphic Designer jargon is said in this minute. Try to keep up.
    12:15 What is Tim’s Process?:
    -Discovery meeting with the client
    -Cleaning up the creative brief
    -Paper wire frames
-Create a visual design of wire frame along with client feedback and iteration.
    -Launch the website
13:21 What the heck is a wire frame?: A wire frame is creating the general structure of the website. The “bones to the house,” or a demo of a song.
15:58 Brandi asks, why doesn’t Tim iterate his websites in public on Instagram?
16:51 He likes to use Instagram as his accountability for specific things.
17:30 Sean Wes says that you have to be very careful how you curate things, but Tim shares the things he wants to share.
18:02 Tims work is kind of boring. It’s not very… “sexy.” (interesting.)
18:29 Mike Monteiro’s book, You’re My Favorite Client. It’s about process and maybe more…
20:00 It’s the money-making work, but it’s just not exciting for fun to look at.
21:04 Tim’s target audience is the “Blue Collar Baller.”

This week Michelle wants to know when (if ever) it is okay to just say no when asked to design something, firing clients, and how Brandi is really the “Simon” of design critique.
1:20 Thanks Matt Kearney for listening!! <3
2:11 Michelle got to go a concert! Train, O.A.R., & Natasha Bedingfield. Sooooo cool.
3:14 Netflix announced a new 8 episode series of The Dark Crystal. *heart eyes*
4:25 Have you seen the Elmo documentary, Being Elmo?
5:00 Michelle’s song for the week: You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me, by John Mayer
9:36 Brandi is the education director for AIGA, and a few weeks ago she helped but on the Behance Portfolio Review, which a time when students pay to bring their portfolios to professionals to review.
11:36 Brandi teaches once a year at Southwest University Visual Arts (design concepts… surprise.), and got to do that this past week. (basically, she just had a really draining week.)
*Also* The guy that does 99u and Behance is named Scott Belsky, and he’s amazing
13:00 If you ever need an eye (or two) to go over your work, hit up Brandi! [email protected]
13:53 Brandi attended a luncheon where the speaker talked about “branded memories.” She said “people make their decisions now and for their future based off of their past experiences.”
15:43 Brandi’s song for the week: Carolina, by Harry Styles
    17:30 ^^^^^^^^THIS ENTIRE ALBUM, YOU GUYS!!^^^^^^^
20:00 Question of the week: Sometimes we get asked to do weird/crazy/random things in our work (at least creatives do.) Is it ever ok to flat tell someone no if they are asking something crazy?
20:45 If you’re going to say no, you need to have a reason for why you’re saying no.
22:00 If the creative/graphic designer is doing his/her job right, then they are going to be presenting and giving the client the absolute best product for their business/event/whatever they need.
22:26 It’s a graphic designers job to find the best solution for you.
26:35 What about if people work in-house?
27:00 This all really depends on your work position. (We talk about book cover design here.)
28:57 You can talk them down and have a conversation, but ultimately if you’re not an art director, it’s harder to say no.
29:34 There are obviously exceptions. Plagiarism? Just say no.
31:00 If you’re in an agency it’s also a but more difficult to say no (especially as an intern), but once again, it’s all about the conversation. If you get an uneasy feeling, have a conversation.
34:42 At around this time we talk about the awkward concept of firing patients. >.<
37:05 Michelle educated someone on plagiarizing and mind mapping and going through a process!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 (Michelle saved the day that day.)
