You're listening to the Live Love Engage podcast. On today's show, why we need more women in local government. Stay tuned.
    00:00:12 - Gloria Grace Rand
I am Gloria Grace Rand, founder of The L.O.V.E. Method and author of the number one Amazon bestseller, Live Love Engage How to Stop Doubting Yourself and Start Being Yourself. In this podcast, we share practical advice from a spiritual perspective on how to live fully, love deeply, and engage authentically so you can create a life and business with more impact, influence, and income. Welcome to live. Love. Engage.
    00:00:46 - Gloria Grace Rand
Namaste. I am Gloria Grace Spiritual Alignment coach, and I work with women entrepreneurs to clear the inner blocks keeping you stuck so you can put yourself first and live the life you want now. And I am so excited about today's guest because I've always been interested in politics, and I think it's because even my mom even ran for the school board when I was a little girl. I remember that. And our guest today has some experience in that. She is a former mayor, businesswoman and author of the Integrity 101 series, and her name is Debbie Peterson, and her first book is called The Happiest Corruption Sleaze, Lies and Suicide in a California Beach Town. And it's a number one bestseller, and it tells the tale of the corruption she uncovered as mayor. So I'm very interested in having her come onto the show today and talk a little bit about her experience. So I want to officially bring her on right now. Hello and Debbie, and welcome to Live Love Engage.
    00:01:58 - Debbie Peterson
Thank you very much. I'm delighted to be here.
    00:02:01 - Gloria Grace Rand
Well, I am so curious to know about you and about what got you interested in politics, because it seems like especially it seems like over the last maybe ten years or so, it's just gotten so well, vicious is the word coming to mind. That's a little harsh. But let's just say, it’s gotten to be, there's a lot of negativity around it and so much where people do not want to work together. They're just out for their own self-interests and not focused in on what their constituents need, shall we say. So in this kind of environment, what got you interested in running for office?
    00:02:50 - Debbie Peterson
I can really relate to that question because even just now, I'm in the middle of an exchange with a friend whose political views I agree with, who's just fixated and almost to the point of being vicious. And it seems like a lot of us are there now, and that's painful. And I think that what people are feeling right now is, well, can't we just talk to each other? Can't we just disagree gracefully, graciously and respect one another? Does it have to be always so full of angst? And having said that, I've been dealing with some angst or was dealing with some angst. But let me start with answering your question, and it's really wonderful that your mom ran for school board, and I hope that more women will do that, more people altogether, particularly business people. And we can talk more about why I think that or I'm suggesting that later. I got into it because I was encouraged by friends and neighbors to run. I had a background in business as an entrepreneur, and also I'd done a lot of redevelopment work and a degree in communications, primarily public relations. And that's what people needed in my town. And so I worked on the planning commission for four years and chaired it for a couple of years. And then I moved into elected positions. I ran for city council in 2008 and 2012, I ran for mayor, and then in 2014 I ran for mayor again, and I didn't win and then ran for county supervisor and again didn't win and went back to the city council. And so I've had altogether about 15 years. And my motivation was not politics. I've always hated politics. And I have to say I really still hate politics. I don't do politics well. And what I really want to do is to get things done and to serve the community and to make the world a better place. And that sounds like unicorns and butterflies, but that's where I'm coming from. And so if we want to have people who are serving the interests of the people they serve and not serving themselves, you probably want people who are a little idealistic and who believe in the principles and really practice those principles that run behind the United States Constitution.
    00:05:06 - Gloria Grace Rand
I'm so glad that you did that. And it's funny, as you were talking, I'm thinking that part of the problem perhaps has been that we're focused in on politics as opposed to governing. What do you see is, like, the difference between the two?
    00:05:25 - Debbie Peterson
Well, good governance is about good management. It's about being good stewards of the money that we are all paying in to provide public services, primarily safety and infrastructure, roads and bridges and sewer systems. And good governance is about good stewardship of those on behalf of the community in which you live. Politics is party, and I think that's what I struggle with so much. I think I truly think that one of the worst things we could possibly have done to one another is to polarize on parties and polarize on opinions and stop looking at how we can make things better for everybody and serve the community and looking only at politics. So I think that politics are actually quite harmful, and I would rather see us working together to make things work that I believe was the original objective. And I think that those views are when I read my history, those views are shared by the founders of our country as well.
    00:06:27 - Gloria Grace Rand
Yeah, I agree. And at the same time, I can't help but think that in the environment we're in right now, in this sort of caustic environment, what would you say to someone how can you encourage them to still be able to take part in governance, to be able to help out their communities, in particular women? Why would it be good for a woman to get involved?
    00:06:57 - Debbie Peterson
I agree that it is caustic, and that really comes home to us a lot. On the other hand, being in local government was so much fun, and it was so rewarding because we could do good things. And I met people I would never have met. I worked with people I never thought I would work with. And it, for me, was really heartwarming and rewarding. There's one really very simple, straightforward reason I find myself asking people, why have we allowed this? Why is it that in our country, 28% of the elected representatives are women, and we're allowing that. We are 51% of the population. Why aren't we represented? Why aren't the gifts that we bring to the table at that table? And that's the first one. Let's talk equality. We're talking equality. We're talking Black History Month. But black women are equally as discriminated against as any color of woman. And that's a really scary thing to me, that we've given everybody their rights except women. Everybody. We talk about representation. We're not talking really about women. And when the United Nations started doing studies, happiness studies, because they determined that the single most important thing

Namaste. I am Gloria Grace, the light messenger and creator of The L.O.V.E. Method, and women entrepreneurs hire me to clear the inner blocks, keeping you stuck so you can put yourself first and live the life you want now. And I am so delighted to have an awesome guest with us today who started her career in the family hairdressing business before embarking on a seven-year journey as a cruise ship guest relations manager. But then she kind of changed careers. So Chrisanthi Voukatidis now became a massage therapist and specialized in Hawaiian lomi lomi and Thai massage and studied the healing arts around the word. Then, you know, life always does this to us, doesn't it? A life altering experience presented her with the ultimate challenge, which led her to heal and transform herself. And we're going to hear all about that in just a moment. But officially now, I want to welcome Chrisanthi to Live Love Engage.
    00:01:04 - Chrisanthi Voukatidis
Hello, Gloria. Good afternoon. It's my pleasure to be here with you. Thank you for having me.
    00:01:09 - Gloria Grace Rand
Well, I am really looking forward to this conversation because I have a feeling you and I have a few things in common. I know we already do have one thing in common and that we were discussing before we started the recording today, that we both grew up in Michigan and, in fact, not too far away from each other either, which is pretty cool. But I want to know more about. I always like to start these interviews asking our guests about the journey that brought them to the place they are now and doing the work that they're doing now. So since I mentioned in the introduction a little bit about this life altering experience, I would love to know a little bit more about that and how that did enable you to be able to heal and transform yourself.
    00:02:00 - Chrisanthi Voukatidis
Well, thank you so much. My life has been full of adventure and abrupt changes that have led me down some really fantastic paths. And the previous 20 years or so, 15 years, I was working as a massage therapist and just loving it. Loving, loving, loving that industry. And unfortunately, fortunately, as life would have it, I was going through a divorce that had been a 20-year relationship, and that had shaken me quite a bit. It took me a little while to get my footing on that, and I was just so thankful to have a profession that I adored. And as I was putting my life back together from that, I was starting to catch my footing and catch my stride and feeling good about myself and thinking, okay, I can do this now. And then one day, I left my apartment to go out for lunch, went out for a wonderful ride, and ended up waking up in an ICU. I had fallen 44 feet off of an overpass from the back of a motorcycle and broken my entire body from my collarbone down to my feet.
    00:03:37 - Gloria Grace Rand
    Oh, my gosh.
    00:03:38 - Chrisanthi Voukatidis
Yeah. And the goal was to get me to the hospital alive. They said, just get her here alive. Well, I got there alive. They didn't expect that I would ever walk again. They expected that I would be paraplegic the rest of my life and have all the challenges that came with that. And I ended up staying in the hospital for all of 2018. The accident happened in April of 2018, early April, and I ended up coming home the end of November of 2018. And when I came home, I came home to a new home because my family moved me and set me up in an apartment that was close to them because I needed around the clock care. And I did come home in a hospital bed with bags all attached to my body without the prospect of leaving that bed. And had I left that bed, I would have left that bed into a wheelchair. I had lost my hair. I had lost all the weight I had on my body. I had looked pretty much like anorexic on the verge of death. It was pretty horrific, really horrific and excruciating pain that I would cry night and day, day and night. So that had been wow, right? Tremendous surprise. And that's what I have been dealing with the last five years, since 2018. Up until now, I have proved the doctors wrong. I do stand. I do walk. I'm not going to say I walk because I used to walk, okay? I used to really like to walk in stride. Now I hobble along with a lot of moaning and groaning. I hobble, but it's a start. It's a start.
    Gloria Grace Rand
    Yeah.
    Chrisanthi Voukatidis
So I just had to come to terms with a whole new way, a whole new reality, a whole new reality, a whole new me. I had pretty much, at that point, lost everything that I thought was important to me. Previously, I lost my home, my marriage, all those things that I thought I had gotten over. And then like that, I lost my strength and almost my will to survive. I really did not want to survive. I survived for the love of my family. And also, I felt like it was disrespectful to God to even wish to not be alive, because I felt that by the grace of God, I was kept alive. So I felt guilty for wanting wishing death, although I did, because the pain was almost unbearable, and the fear for the future was tremendous as well, because I thought, how am I going to go on now? So it has been a very tumultuous five years. I have learned a tremendous amount. It's like I'm a whole different person, really.
    00:07:25 - Gloria Grace Rand
Well, I can imagine well, I can't exactly imagine the pain that you're going through, but certainly the transformation that you've had to go through. I mean, the fact that you have been able to be able to at least stand and as you say hobble a little bit. So was there anything in particular other than maybe your sheer will that enabled you to defy these doctors’ predictions early on that got you out of the bed, out of the chair, and to be able to do that?
    00:07:58 - Chrisanthi Voukatidis
Yes, I believe so. I believe 100% in the power of prayer. I had so many people praying for me around the clock, praying for me. I prayed night and day. My mother prayed with me, her whole congregation, people I didn't even know prayed for me. And also, I think that was the grace of God. And I figured if I should have died in that fall, the doctors couldn't believe I survived it, so I should have died. I didn't die. So I figured, why didn't I die? I mean, some people die, they fall two steps off a ladder and you can die. So I was like, wow. So I trusted. I just trusted in God that there was a reason for it all. Who am I to know? So it was prayer, it was will, it was night and day, meditation, visualization, all the things I have learned throughout my years of massage therapy and the miracle of the human body, the human body. I am amazed at our body. We are miraculously and fearfully made, right?
    Gloria Grace Rand
    Yes.
    Chrisanthi Voukatidis
We are. And I clung to that. I really clung to that. And in my prayers, in my visualization, I would imagine, I would visualize the nerves shooting, I would visualize the blood flowing, I would visualize what was happening internally and call on the intelligence of God to do what was necessary to get me going, to get me going. And I believe in all of that. I mean, I believed it through massage therapy that our thoughts create our wellness, our illness, our intention matters. It all matters, I think.
    00:10:34 - Gloria Grace Rand
    Yeah, absolutely.
    00:10:36 - Chrisanthi Voukatidis
So it was those things. And I'm really, really thankful that I did have that background in massage therapy because it gave me a better understanding of our anatomy. And I also had a very spiritual connection, very close relationship with our creator, and a tremendous love for my family that without them, I wouldn't have survived. No way. No way. They didn't leave my side. Not one day. Not one day. They didn't leave my side. And they worked my body, they lifted my legs, they moved my arms, because I couldn't do anything. So they did for my body what I couldn't do. And it was so sweet. My sister, as she would lift my legs,...

Namaste. I am Gloria Grace, the Light Messenger and creator of The L.O.V.E. And I am so delighted to be with you to bring you an awesome guest. I know. Or at least I'm sure she's going to be awesome because I've already learned about her and had a chance to talk about her. But she has written an excellent book called Communicate with Courage -Taking Risks to Overcome the Four Hidden Challenges. And she is the president of Gladieux Consulting, a Midwest boy. I can't talk today. I apologize. A Midwest based team known for top notch design and presentation of seminars in communication and leadership topics around the U.S. That must be why we're talking about communication. It's getting me tongue tied. Very strange. Oh, well, she provides executive coaching and facilitates strategic planning for clients in diverse industries, in governments, nonprofits, and in academia. So without further ado, I want to welcome Michelle Gladieux to live, love, engage.
    00:01:18 - Michelle Gladieux
Hello. Thanks for having me, Gloria.
    00:01:20 - Gloria Grace Rand
Well, I'm so happy to have you. And despite my tongue tiedness there at the beginning, I decided I could have stopped and started over again. Hey, you know, we're talking about communicating today, so what the heck, let's let's know that sometimes things don't always come out of our mouths the way we intend. But before we get to talking about your book, which I loved, by the way, I would love to know what got you interested in communication and leadership that you are involved with.
    00:01:49 - Michelle Gladieux
Well, I don't know how anyone can't be, to be honest, Gloria. I just think it's the makings. If you get good at communication, it's the makings of a healthy, happy life. And then with our communication strength and prowess and using pro moves and gaining courage, we can help improve others’ lives as well. So it gives me a reason to get up in the morning. And I know that we're all making a few thousand decisions, big and small, every day, and so many of those are about communication that I think is a topic that we should all be interested in studying. I don't know, maybe I'm biased, but I'm definitely always analyzing my email, my texts, my birthday cards I write, my presentations. I just think that the intention, as you do in communication and energy and skill really matters.
    00:02:40 - Gloria Grace Rand
Well, were you like this as a kid, too?
    00:02:44 - Michelle Gladieux
Like this as a kid? I was a little kid who would go tap the teacher on the shoulder and whisper that what that teacher was trying with the student might not work as well as something else, a different method that they could try for interacting with that student. So I think I was destined for that psychology degree, and then I found organizational psychology in college and thought, oh, my gosh, the marriage of business and the study of human behavior. I'm in.
    00:03:12 - Gloria Grace Rand
Yeah, I was always interested in I think I took at least one psychology course when I was in school as well, and I think it was while I was majoring in communications, now that I think about it, because I had originally started as a business administration major, and calculus and economics did not agree with me at the time. So I like that you did that. And we have a few other things that got maybe we'll get into that.
    00:03:35 - Michelle Gladieux
Later, but for now, we have happy and sad in common.
    00:03:39 - Gloria Grace Rand
Yeah. And it's what makes us who we are today. So it's all good. So let's get into talking about the book. Actually, I'm going to ask you first, why did you decide to write a book about communication?
    00:03:51 - Michelle Gladieux
I had had thousands of executive coaching and training clients and got to know them personally and deeply. And I think through all those deep connections and conversations, I kept seeing over the last 20 years or so a pattern of challenges that seemed to be just kind of peripheral vision. Folks weren't really able to name them and thus couldn't work on them. So I wanted to put some of my best strategies for communication on paper from my heart and also illustrate these four hidden challenges that trip us up.
    00:04:26 - Gloria Grace Rand
Well, I love how you incorporated not only this excellent advice about how to communicate, but you also weaved in some personal examples as well. But I think my favorite is the pro moves and then the homework. Well, not exactly homework. Yeah, I guess homework at the end of each chapter for people to try. So share with us a little bit about what you mean by well, what you mean by, I guess these four hidden challenges, what they are and how we can overcome them.
    00:04:59 - Michelle Gladieux
Sure, there are four, and I guess I would invite the listeners today to just lovingly think through whether any of these obstacles are prohibiting you from getting to your best place, your potential as a communicator. So I see four hidden challenges. They are separate but related, and I'm dealing with one or more of these every day. So I don't think we ever graduate and completely get rid of one. Once I tackle one, another will raise its head, and I just keep trying to be real with myself about my strengths and limitations and expand my courage as a communicator. Here they are. The first hidden challenge is hiding from risk. And when we're hiding from risk, we are afraid that we might expose one of our weaknesses. A real or a supposed weakness could be something you believe about yourself as a weakness that is true. Or it could be negative self-talk that's not factual. But in hiding from risk, we don't stand up. We don't use our voice, we don't use the power of our pen to communicate or through email when we could and we could advocate perhaps for ourselves or others ideas. The second hidden challenge is defining to be right. And when you're defining to be right, you're just so darn sure. And you're probably relying on assumptions quite a bit. Now, you may be very smart, you may be very emotionally intelligent, have a lot of good strengths in that area. But when we are defining to be right, we're putting too much stock into our assumption. And that doesn't let others’ ideas come in. And it can get in the way of being an inclusive leader, as I hope we're all striving to be as communicators. So the third challenge is I call it rationalizing the negative. And you might know it as pessimism, because it is when we shield ourselves from taking chances, maybe the chance to say the hard thing or to address a conflict or negotiate, apologize, ask for help, summoning one's courage and finding the faith that something positive could happen, even though there are potential negative consequences as well. That's weighing risk intelligently. And when you stop rationalizing the negative, you start to have faith in positive possibilities, which I think will carry us far as communicators. So that one I like to work with clients on overcoming pessimistic thinking and mindsets, and I like to work on my own mind. I'd always look for the gift.

    Thank you for having us.
    00:01:43 – Monica Lawson
    Thank you.
    00:01:45 - Gloria Grace Rand
Yeah. I am just so excited about talking to you today about this book, because I loved it. We three, we speak the same language, I know, and it was one of those where you hate to put it down, but it was on my computer, so I was reading it that way, and so I have to put it down sometimes. But it was wonderful just being able to go through learning about your story. For those of you listening and watching this today, if you want to know more about their stories, read the book. But I wanted to start off today with talking with you a little bit about why you wrote the book and tell us a little bit more about it. Yeah. And really why you wrote it and what you hope to accomplish with it, I guess. So whoever wants to go first, chime in.
    00:02:40 - Elizabeth Kendig
    I know.
    00:02:40 - Monica Lawson
I think Elizabeth should go first.
    00:02:42 - Elizabeth Kendig
This is going to be a fun dance for us. Well, you're the perfect person to ask that question, Gloria. We are all on the same page about knowing the power of people, embracing who they are, discovering their mission, living more authentic lives. And our way into that is with support and in conversation with the other side. So, for me, I've tried every healing modality under the sun. I've done years of therapy, and what really clicked was understanding that I have this team on the other side. You can read about your team in the book. They are multifaceted and they are here to support us on that journey. And that has given me so much peace and freedom and trust in myself and knowing that there is this whole cheering squad out there who only wants me to be aligned and live a life of more joy. So that's why that's why I wrote it. Monica, do you want to add anything?
    00:03:51 - Monica Lawson
Probably the way we were told to write the book, it was really interesting.
    00:03:57 - Elizabeth Kendig
    Yeah. Yes.
    00:03:58 - Monica Lawson
So I had been doing this work for many, many years, and I kept hearing, write a book, write a book, write a book. And I'm like, I have no idea how to write a book or where to start or what to do. And my husband, thankfully, reminded me and said, hello, practice what you preach. And so that night, I had asked the other side, okay, you want me to write a book? Send me the person. Send me the person. And not only send me the person, but it has to be joyous, it has to be effortless, and it has to be in service, and I kid you not. The following morning, Elizabeth gives me a call about a dream she had telling her we were going to write a book. And she had no idea that I had asked the night before to be sent the perfect person.
    00:04:43 - Gloria Grace Rand
I love that. I love when the universe does that. And I especially love how quick that the universe did this, in your case. So I think it's because it was really meant to be, and you really needed to get this message out. So can you just tell a little bit about a little bit more about what the book is about? What the book is about? Yeah, so that people can get a sense of why they need to read it.
    00:05:14 - Monica Lawson
Do you want me to go first?
    00:05:16 - Elizabeth Kendig
    Yes.
    00:05:16 - Monica Lawson
Okay. So for me, going through this journey, I had done every single thing that I was supposed to do. Everything that society tells you what to do, everything that society tells you you're supposed to have: the white picket fence, the house, you name it, I did it. And going through that, there was always still just something missing. Something wasn't just quite right. I was very happy. I was extremely happy, but just something wasn't right. And when the other side kept knocking and knocking and knocking to do this work, I really sat with them and said, okay, what is this about? Why am I supposed to do this work? And it was really to teach humanity, including myself, that we're here for three reasons. We're here on a mission. Every single human on this planet is here on a mission. We're here to help heal, teach, and serve communities. And we're here to leave a legacy for the future generation. And once I discovered that and started working with that, my life just became even more joyous and happier and just this newfound energy I had. And so once I started doing this, I wanted to do it for everybody. And so I opened the doors and just said, bring me the souls that you need me to deliver messages to, because I wanted them to also have the same happiness and peace and freedom that I had from working with them.
    00:06:38 - Gloria Grace Rand
    That's awesome.
    00:06:39 - Elizabeth Kendig
    Monica Lawson
    Thankfully.
    Elizabeth Kendig
And I was one of those people, Monica yes. I was a client for many years before we wrote this book. And Monica was doing one on one sessions, and whether she intended to or not, and I think she's done it with all of her clients. She taught me how to connect with the other side, and that while she does have some superpowers, we can all do that. It's, it's magical. It's not magic. In the book, we teach those same steps, and Monica developed them, actually, to teach her; children how to connect and work with their team. And so she had done that for me, and my life really transformed as a result. And when we put our heads together and our hearts together, and we were given our marching orders to write this book, we thought, there's no reason why we can't teach this and we need to teach this to everyone. And so the book really it's part memoir for us. It's our story, and it's stories of clients and friends and family, but it's a how to; it's a primer for how to work with your team.
    00:07:54 - Gloria Grace Rand
And I do love that you had so many examples in there from, as you say, from your clients or family and friends, so that people can really see how it works in action. Could you maybe share one example so people might get a better idea of how this works in practical terms?
    00:08:14 - Elizabeth Kendig
You have so many examples. Which one should we do? Well, I just hosted a book club for some women who read the book. And early in the book, we teach you about the other side, who is on your team, how to give them permission to work with you,...

Namaste. I am Gloria Grace, the Light Messenger and creator of the L.O.V.E. Method. And for those of you who might be joining us for the first time and haven't heard of me, let me tell you who I am a little bit more about what I do. So women entrepreneurs hire me to clear the inner blocks, keeping you stuck so you can put yourself first and live the life you want now. And I am so delighted to have with us a guest today that I'm going to be bringing on who has developed a revolutionary step by step method to minimize stress and maximize happiness based on the science of neuroplasticity. And she holds a doctorate in traditional Chinese medicine and is the author of The Calm Code - Transform Your Mind and Change Your Life. So I'm going to bring her on right now, and I want to welcome you officially Dr. Annie White to Live, Love, Engage.
    Dr. Annie White
Well, thank you for having me. It's an honor to be here. I love your show.
    Gloria Grace Rand
Well, thank you so much. I know we I believe we met through a publicity summit not too long ago, and I was intrigued by what you have to offer and about this book. And I thought, though, before we get into this method that you developed to really help people, to minimize stress, which is something we all need to do from time to time, is just share a little bit about your background. And certainly, what got you interested in, number one, traditional Chinese medicine, and then eventually, what led you to even write a book?
    Dr. Annie White
That's a great question. Traditional Chinese medicine came about because I was making a huge career change, and I knew I wanted to help people. I just didn't know exactly what I wanted to do. And at the time, I was working for a nonprofit, and I loved the idea of the job and I didn't like the logistics, the day to day of the job. They wanted me to run it for them, and it was constantly fundraising and it just didn't resonate with me. And at the same time, I took an overview class in traditional Chinese medicine and how it worked. And it was at the school that I went and eventually got my master's degree, and it just resonated with me because we were treating people on the mind, body, spirit level, and it was all intertwined and I loved that. And we were also treating the root cause of things instead of symptoms. It made so much sense to me, and I fell in love and I signed up for a four year master's degree program and then went on to do a two year doctorate on top of it. So that's how I got into Chinese medicine. And as I was treating patients and I was seeing that high stress and anxiety was affecting my patients and their health so much, and I knew if I didn't find a way to dramatically decrease their stress and anxiety, no one would ever be happy or, quite frankly, healthy. So I did a deep dive into the science of the brain and the root cause of why we get stressed. And it's based on our thoughts. And most people don't realize this, but according to the science of neuroplasticity, every thought, action and emotion wires your mind, trains your mind along those corresponding pathways. So after a stressful period, if you've had a lot of stressful thoughts, you've inadvertently been building that stress area of your mind so that your thoughts tend to go there more quickly. So after I figured that out, then I researched ways to have the reverse happen. So how do we build a relaxed and happy mind? And that's what I figured out.
    Gloria Grace Rand
Wow. And it's so true because I know from my experience in the past when, let's say, just something happens that disappoints you, and you can, I’ve had, shall we say, not healthy crutches to lean on, like overeating is one in particular. And it just has been my default for so long that it took me quite a while to be able to not go to those old methods of being able to handle things and to be able to come up with new and more empowering ways to go. And sometimes I still kind of slip back into old patterns. So can you talk a little bit about maybe just talk a little bit more about why, say, the experience that I've had of sometimes I can kind of get over it, but sometimes I don't? Is that something maybe that you've seen a lot of it and then we can talk a little bit more about how you've been able to help people to kind of rewire the brain in a more positive manner?
    Dr. Annie White
Yeah. Habits are also a wiring of sorts, and I think it's going to depend on your trigger. You might notice that if it's a more stressful thing setting you off, it's harder to resist that barrier. It's harder because it's really been ingrained in you over the years. And everybody I mean, we're all human. We all have our ways of coping. So it shows itself in so many different ways and so many different people. And I think you'll notice that it does correspond with the level of stress, the level of disappointment, the level of unsatisfaction that you're feeling. Right?
    Gloria Grace Rand
    Yeah. Yes.
    Dr. Annie White
It’s true. And it's rewiring those pathways so that that stress doesn't hit you as hard. Right. Once your mind has been trained to be more calm and happy, stressful things hit us in a different way. It's more balanced. It doesn't set us on like a stress, anxiety or worry pattern right away.
    Gloria Grace Rand
So can you share with us maybe at least one or two things that you discovered that would help people to be able to minimize stress?
    Dr. Annie White
Absolutely. And what I did was so I went through all of the research and things like looking at pictures, especially pictures of nature, but also pictures that make you smile, that make you laugh. Imagining your best possible self. So imagining future scenarios where you're your best possible self. Gratitude has been proven to make people 25% happier. But why is that? It's because it has wired their mind to be 25% happier. Visualization is another one. Visualization can really trigger those calm and happy parts of the brain. So what I did is I uncovered these and then I combined them into tools that use more than one at a time, usually three plus at a time together.
    Gloria Grace Rand
Very cool. So one of the things that I know that I have used tremendously that are a couple of my go-to's are like meditation and journaling because as a matter of fact, it was like yesterday I had a disappointing event happen. And so I really consciously worked hard at like, okay, what can I do today that's going to be better? Let me journal for a little while. Okay. And then I felt better. And then it kind of got sad again and was like, okay, what else can I do? Let's see, let me see. I can maybe meditate. So are those things some of the things that you recommend to do or what other things that you recommend folks do?
    Dr. Annie White
Yeah, I mean, definitely meditation has been proven to train your mind to be more relaxed. I love the journaling. I love affirmations. I'm trying to recall all of the tools that I included in the book because there are a lot of them. There are so many ways to ignite those pathways, those calm, those relaxed, those happy pathways in your mind. And that's what you're trying to do. You could watch a funny YouTube video. I mean, that could do it too. Or a comedian that could help.
    Gloria Grace Rand
Oh, yeah, absolutely. I definitely… laughter goes a long way towards helping you to improve your mood. What's been the maybe biggest challenge that you faced in you

I just know I'm going to bring our guest on in just a second. And today's guest is an amazing woman. She is an award-winning entrepreneur featured on the reality show Secret Millionaire. Hilary DeCesare helps women turn typical life transitions into transformation. And she's been coaching women in her Silicon Valley success methods for decades. And her new book is called Relaunch - Spark Your Heart to Ignite Your Life, which I like that title and it details what's beyond IQ and EQ, namely 3HQ, which we are going to talk about in a bit. But first, I want to officially bring in Hilary and welcome you officially to Live, Love, Engage.
    00:01:24 - Hilary DeCesare
Gloria it’s so fun. If it's anything like what we were talking about before, it will be very lively.
    00:01:29 - Gloria Grace Rand
Well, I certainly hope so. And I love having really heart centered people on the show and also people who are doing wonderful things in the world and beyond, even what I read just shared with people in your bio. You also have your own podcast as well, and you're a speaker and you do lots of amazing things. And the fact is that you also started out as a CEO of a Silicon Valley company, which is that's unusual in its face right there because you're a woman and usually it's a very traditional male bastions, shall we say. So I am really curious to know how you transitioned from that into doing the work that you're doing today.
    00:02:24 - Hilary DeCesare
Well, you know what? Doesn't it always start when you're like, well, let me tell you when I was young, but I'm going to zip through to college where I went pre-med and I ended up not enjoying the premed thing. My dad thought, let's go ahead and not do that. Let's break the cycle. So it ended up that I went and got a degree in psychology and I really wanted to get into business at that point. I had been fortunate enough to get into a class only through the divine intervention. There was a snowstorm and the computer system went down and I did a bubble in the right spot and I got this class and they couldn't kick me out, which was great. It was personal selling. And that led me to Silicon Valley. It led me to Oracle. I was there in a high-tech company for almost ten years. And yes, as you said, it was definitely a boys’ world. I was swimming upstream, but man, I was going to do everything I could to make it happen. So, you know, Cheryl Sandberg is telling me to lean in. I'm leaning in. I am like, all in. And of course, she was the CEO of Facebook and Meta, and this was before even the lean in movement happened. And after about ten years, I thought, you know what? I want to do something different. I want to help others level up their businesses. I want to help people, men and women at that time, develop a company, be able to go out, raise money, be able to understand the dynamics of business and not have a business degree, but still be able to run a successful business. Whether you're starting out as a startup at zero or whether you're trying to scale from six to seven to eight figures. So I did that for a very long time, and I was helping numerous women and men, and then I got the bug. I'm like, I really want to start my own ventures. So I did, and I was able to raise almost $10 million for one company and be able to launch others. And I realized that I kept coaching along the way. I kept having people come into my world. And what I noticed, which I think is the most important, is at that time, people would come to me, and they, especially women, and they would say, all right, I just want to focus on my business and scaling it. And I would ask, well, tell me about your personal life, tell me about what's going on with that. And it'd be like, well, wait, I don't even want to deal with that, because I haven't been able to get out there. I haven't been able to find the one, or my marriage really isn't doing very well. I'm working all the time, and there was always this disconnect between personal and professional lives. Well, then I started to go through that, and I ended up getting a divorce, and I had three kids. And so I knew at that time something had to give. There was some piece of this whole element of consulting, and we called it consulting. Now it's coaching that had to bring personal and professional together.

Wow. Yeah, I can relate to that. Especially the part about finding yourself still coaching people. Because it's interesting, I think, especially when you are doing some sort of you're working with clients, even if you're working with them in a different capacity. That sometimes can happen. Because my business has been for the longest time, it was copywriting. And so I was helping businesses with their online marketing. And yet I would find that just naturally they'd be asking me about what else can I do to grow my business? And things like that. And so I just started coaching them unofficially. I never really declared that I was a business coach, but I wound up doing that. So it's interesting that that happens. So I like that you realize, because that's the other thing, too, is I've noticed that being successful in one area of your life is lovely, but if you’re not, it's at the expense, shall we say, of other areas of your life, then it sort of takes the bloom off of it. I'm trying to think of the right metaphor or something, but make it as fun, right? When you're having that, I'm thinking it's like, is there a chicken and egg here? So did you come up with this 3HQ and then you wrote a book about it? Or did you in the process of writing the book, maybe did you develop it?
    00:07:20 - Hilary DeCesare
Well, I think that and we were laughing before because you call yourself the Light Messenger, and many have called me the Relaunch Queen because there's been so many impactful relaunches in my life, which helps when people come to me and say, have you ever had anything like this happen? I'll be like, well, it's not just my customer's life or my client's life or it's my life. I actually had that. And eventually I had to kind of look up to the universe and say, all right, enough. I don't want any more. I don't want any more relaunches or any more of these major transitions that are happening in my life. But then you realize that that is life. It's global relaunches that are happening right now. It's personal relaunches, professional relaunches, trying to figure out your purpose, your passion, those are all relaunches, and there's positive and there's the negative ones. And so as I was kind of like, really I was involved in another company, I started to really look at what as a woman, and I love how Brene Brown defines middle age between 35 and when you're dead. So I think it encompasses a lot of us that are probably listening. And I realized, you know what, how can I really, at this point, with all of the experience that I've had, how do I share, how do I give back? How do I impact with the experiences that I've seen and the thousands of people that I've worked with? And so it was during a time where my mom,...
