Black History Year

Destroying--Then Rebuilding--The Black Man with Phil Agnew

Listen Later

Today's History Story: Million Man March

Under white supremacy, many Black men have been rewarded for fitting into its anti-Black definition of masculinity – and it’s often been to our people’s detriment. But there are people reimagining who the Black man is and working to decolonize and reconstruct the Black man from head to toe, inside and out - mind, body, and soul.

One such person is today’s guest, Phillip Agnew. Phil is a community organizer who, in 2012, co-founded the Dream Defenders in the wake of the murder of Trayvon Martin. More recently, he’s co-founded Black Men Build, an organization that represents a wide group of Black people from all walks of life – organizers, artists, communicators, educators, and creatives – who have come together to grapple with issues that are challenging Black men using social, economic, political, and spiritual tools needed to evolve and power Black futures.
