On the Money and Wealth podcast, John Hope Bryant interviews Grammy-winning producer and entrepreneur Dallas Austin about turning talent into intellectual property, ownership, and wealth. Austin recounts growing up in Columbus, Georgia, escaping hardship through music, and moving to Atlanta with his mother to pursue his dream.
He explains signing a work-for-hire deal as a teenager, producing major hits for Boyz II Men and TLC while being tied up contractually, and how guidance from Clarence Avant and Dr. Dallas Moore helped him resolve it. Austin describes building DARP Studios, learning hard financial lessons after discovering a major IRS debt caused by an unregulated business manager, and writing his way out of it.
He also shares how Drumline and ATL led him to help pass Georgia’s film incentives, and discusses his current distribution company DAD (Dream All Day) while encouraging listeners to follow their true gifts.

Ellison shares growing up in rural Maine with incarceration and homelessness, and how persistence and relationship capital helped him break in by cold-calling Goldman Sachs and later becoming a key partner to their event. He explains his path into tech startups, joining a Y Combinator company that later exited for over $3B, and how AI increases the value of engineers while elevating human judgment and creativity.

John Hope Bryant hosts a special Money and Wealth episode on recession‑proofing your life, urging listeners not to panic but to prepare and understand economic cycles (expansion, peak, contraction, bottom, recovery).
John explains that recessions reset rather than obliterate, and notes long‑term upward trends in real estate, stock markets, and U.S. GDP, highlighting how fear can lead to bad decisions and missed opportunities. Using personal stories from the 2008 housing crisis and a 2022 market decline, he emphasizes liquidity, good credit, and patience.
He discusses how downturns hit Black and brown communities earlier due to fewer reserves, citing higher Black unemployment and lower emergency savings, and urges ownership. Action steps include protecting human capital, learning AI, building cash reserves, improving credit, reducing high‑interest debt, knowing your burn rate, and building relationship capital with bankers and advisors.

John Hope Bryant welcomes investor and Ares Management co-founder/executive chairman Tony Ressler, discussing Ressler’s career from Drexel to co-founding Apollo and building Ares, his philosophy that “if you don’t quit, you can’t fail,” and the importance of understanding sources of capital and when to use debt versus equity.
They recount how a philanthropic ask for Operation HOPE led to Ressler backing Bryant’s Promise Homes affordable single-family rental venture, including advice on leverage and patience. Ressler also details Centennial Yards, a major downtown Atlanta redevelopment involving private-public partnership, local investors, new housing, hotels, restaurants, and venues.
The conversation emphasizes compassionate capitalism, widening access to education and capital, affordability in housing and healthcare, and preparing students for jobs of the future.

John Hope Bryant unpacks what entrepreneurship is and isn’t, stressing it differs from small business ownership and social-media “lifestyle” images.
Using a viral “Go-Kart God” example and his own experience running payroll for hundreds, he describes entrepreneurs as high-risk builders who work relentlessly under uncertainty to create scalable enterprise value and equity, not just income.
He outlines capitalism’s ecosystem roles (employees, self-employed, business owners, entrepreneurs), discusses taxes and capital gains, and traces “entrepreneur” from French origins through Cantillon, Say, and Schumpeter’s “creative destruction” with examples like Sears, Blockbuster, and Netflix.
John also shares his personal origin story: from Compton and a banker’s classroom visit to launching the Neighborhood Candy House. He emphasizes the importance of observation, demand, pricing, cash flow, reinvestment, and personal agency.

John Hope Bryant explains what it means to be an “operating entrepreneur” as he records from a quiet late-night retreat in Wailea, Maui, to show how silence fuels thinking and wealth creation.
Responding to a viral clip about poor neighborhoods being noisy and wealthy ones quiet, he argues the real divider is economics (“green”), not race, and that poverty removes peace, time, and mental bandwidth. He links stability and quiet to focused attention, strategy, ideas, intellectual property, ownership, assets, wealth, wellness, and longevity, citing Operation HOPE’s Financial Wellness Index showing higher credit-score neighborhoods correlate with longer life expectancy.
He warns smartphones and the attention economy recreate “noise” anywhere, urges protecting attention, prioritizing the important over the urgent, and moving from labor to ownership by creating and owning ideas.

John Hope Bryant announces the launch of Juanita AI, Operation HOPE’s first public-facing AI agent and the first product of HOPE AI co-chaired with Van Jones, modeled after and named for John's mother, Juanita Smith. He argues AI won’t replace most jobs, but workers may be replaced by those who can use AI, urging audiences to upskill quickly as change accelerates from 2024–2030.
John describes Juanita Smith’s journey from poverty to a million-dollar net worth, including saving on low wages, buying and selling seven homes, maintaining strong credit, and building assets, and says Juanita AI will provide 24/7 free (donor-funded) guidance on financial literacy and resilience via OperationHOPE.org

John Hope Bryant sits down with billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist Strive Masiyiwa and framing the conversation around the “African century.”
Masiyiwa describes founding the Econet Group, defeating Zimbabwe’s state telecom monopoly through a Supreme Court constitutional ruling, relocating to South Africa to access capital, and expanding across Africa—especially Nigeria, where he assembled a local consortium to buy a $285 million mobile license and lived in Lagos to build the business.
He explains shifting from mobile to fiber and satellite infrastructure, building 150,000 miles of network and connecting Africa east-to-west, then moving into data centers, mobile money, and global acquisitions. He outlines core operating values (innovation, people/product/process, diverse talent, faith lived through actions), discusses the Higher Life Foundation’s education and health work, and recounts leadership roles during Ebola and COVID responses.

In the latest episode of Money & Wealth, John Hope Bryant tackles the taboo topic of gambling and sports betting, framing it as an issue of ownership and mindset. John argues the “house always wins,” citing casino growth, heavy betting-company advertising, and that many lottery winners go bankrupt, while mobile betting has put a “casino in your pocket,” especially after 2018 legalization.
Bryant says people seek shortcuts because housing, college, and living costs feel unattainable, and warns gambling can resemble investing when ownership feels impossible.
