The panelists introduce themselves. Nell is a principal engineer at Chef, Lee runs the DevOps consulting team Fuzzy Logic Systems, and Scott runs Cloud Mechanics consulting. The topic of today’s podcast is containers. They begin by defining what a container is, with each sharing their own definition. Containers aren’t really new, they’re just a hot topic because companies like Docker made them easier to use and has brought them into the mainstream. The panelists agree that containers are not for storing data, only for running applications, but that data can be mounted to a container. This is one of the biggest beginner mistakes.

 They discuss situations that are conducive to the proper use of containers. Containers are best added to mature and large scale projects. They discuss the pros and cons of Kubernetes. The panel gives advice on how to start using containers, suggesting new users start by containerizing one thing at a time rather than trying to do it all at once. They remind listeners that if you want something to stick around for each deploy, it should not be in the container itself because containers are temporary. They talk about how to create a container, good patterns and anti-patterns found when using containers. They discuss possible security concerns with anti-patterns in containers. They finish by talking about other container orchestrators and how to get traffic to Docker boxes

The panel starts by discussing the advantages blockchain gives in the payment world and how it works. Double spend is defined and how blockchain solves this problem is explained. Using a financial model the panel discusses how blockchain works. Privacy and security are considered as the panel discusses how blockchain makes it safer to make financial information public. The 51% attack problem is defined and the panel explains how blockchain combats these types of attacks. They address how blockchain works from a more technical perspective and why it is so hard to change the history in blockchain. Proof of work and proof of stake algorithms are explained and compared; blockchains that use each of these are mentions. The panel compares private and public blockchains.

This new addition to the Devchat.tv podcast family is about software sustainability, open source projects funding and software maintenance. The panelists introduce themselves and their roles and backgrounds in software sustainability. The panelists also mention that 57% of all software built is open-source and the economic value of open source is over 360 billion dollars so it is crucial to keep developers who maintain open-source projects from burning out. That being said open-source projects have difficulty accessing funding. The panelists talk about efforts that have been made to combat that such as opencollective.com. They then talk about some of the other topics the panelists plan to cover are and invite the audience to recommend topics they would like to hear more about on open-source sustainability.

Today the panel is talking about documentation. They begin by discussing what documentation is, where it fits within an application, and if the code documents itself. They agree that documentation starts in the comments to explain what you’re doing, but if that’s your exclusive method, then a refactor is in order. They talk about where to start with documentation and different ways they’ve done it. 

The panel talks about the importance of documentation, especially for people just joining a team. In addition to documenting the project itself, it is important to document what different libraries do and how to interact with them. They discuss where to put this kind of documentation. They talk about documenting patterns, best practices, and procedures in addition to the ‘how to’ of a project. The conversation turns to style guidelines, what they are, and how to keep them up to date. They talk about what tools are available to generate documentation that are close to the code but outside of it that can help keep documentation up to date. The panel believes that there is a relationship between the size of your team and the necessity to document. Nate introduces the idea found in the article by Tom Preston-Werner that you should think about what you’re going to create in the code, and document it first.

Christoffer Niska has been in web development for over a decade and works with mainly PHP and JavaScript, but knows about 8 different languages, often working in multiple languages simultaneously. The panel discusses the affect learning another language has on how you write the code you’re working on. They talk about TypeScript and Christoffer shares how he got into it. They discuss the prevalence of TypeScript and some of the tools available for it, like Fable.io. TypeScript is a very beneficial language because it can help with refactoring and automation. Christoffer believes that it is better to write libraries in TypeScript. He shares how to release an NPM package with Typescript. They talk about more tools that work with TypeScript.

The panel talks about Reason ML, which is an alternative syntax on top of OCaml.They discuss how the success of ReasonML is evaluated. ReasonML has been found to dramatically reduce bugs and has many features, such as a pattern matching feature. The panel talks about the availability of ReasonML to those who are not on the Facebook team. ReasonML and Typescript can also be compiled into WebAssembly and other languages. They finish by talking about some of the many tools that Reason ML has built in.

Guest Charlie Cheever joins the discussion on JavaScript Jabber today. He was previously on React Round Up episode 47. Charlie works on Expo, which is a way to make React apps on every platform. Right now, Expo supports IOS, Android, and Web, provides a standard library of features, and takes care of services like builds and updates over the air. There are also code generators and templates available in Expo. Expo is focused on use cases where you just need to use a little bit of React Native in your app. Charlie talks about the origins of Expo, which was born from increased access of websites from people’s phones and the desire for a cross-platform tool that was as easy as building on the web. One of the biggest benefits is that Expo gives you the peace of mind knowing your app will work across all phones and all platforms.

They discuss how to approach building your API’s for Expo so that it’s easy for people to use and have it consistent across all these different systems. Expo also has a voting board canny.expo.io where people can submit suggestions for new features. Expo is compatible with map view and React Native maps. Currently, Expo is missing bluetooth and things where the underlying platform wants to have a direct relationship with the developer, such as in-app purchases. Charlie talks about other components available in Expo, all of which can be modified. They discuss the influence of React on augmented reality and VR. Charlie talks about the updating feature of Expo. Charlie talks about the evolution of Expo and their goal to be a “developer first” company. He talks about the company, libraries, The Client, and services. He gives advice on how to get started with React Native development and using Expo. There is also Expo Web, which can be used to create a website, and if you create an app with Expo you get a website too. Expo hopes to be a stable, easy, coherent way of using all these tools across your entire experience of building your application so that you can relax a little bit.
